***OFFICIAL GOPHERS VS FURMAN IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Mo was badly outplayed for quite a while. He did step it up toward the end though. Made some big free throws and also finally got some stops on defense. Buggs did not do anything. Made a really bad turnover; went straight to the bench and was never see again.

Mo had a tough time for a while, but I will tell you he was getting hacked badly under the basket early in the second half and the refs would not call it for him.

Mo was badly outplayed by their big most of the night. Probably too laid back. He is what he is. A below-the-rim big man, who's got lot's of finesse. Nice passing, finger rolls, soft hooks, tip ins and put backs, but no thunder. As long as he's scoring baskets it's all good. When he was at the line at the end of the game, I turned to my buddy and said "He's got these. This is the kind of thing he does really well.".

Would you agree that he's never the toughest guy under the basket?

I don't know if it is just me but Mo and King's attitude on the court irritates me sometimes. Mo looks disinterested at times (maybe because of the juxtaposition compared to Elliason) and King just looks pissed off and depressed (I've noticed this more ever since Martin left).

These guys need to be good team players. Especially since Gaston Diedhou and Kanote need veteran leadership

I just got done watching the game. I was able to get 1500 to come in on the way to my own game and the Gophers were comfortably ahead with not a tone of time left in the first half. When I saw GopherHole's tweets, I was shocked that this became a ball game was expecting to be pretty pissed when I watched the game. Truthfully, I am not that down on the Gophers performance. I think a couple guys on the team were out of it mentally/physically at times in this game, but I also think that just missing open shots made the team as a whole look more sluggish than they truly were. Furman had 8 point in the second half off 3 miracle shots, and you could argue that another 12-15 points in the second half were miracles too. The defense on Kendrec Ferrara was probably the biggest disappointment to me, both centers made that kid look like he should be starting in the B1G for somebody. DeAndre Mathieu seemed like the only guy on the team who was playing the type of perimeter defense we've been accustomed to post Louisville.

The negatives aside, I think Nate Mason's performance in crunch time was a major, major positive for this team. The freshman made a number of huge threes that prevented Furman from ever getting the ball with a chance to go up by more than one possession. On the first of those 3's, it was Bakary Konate who made a nice pass out of the post in to the corner for a Mason three. DeAndre Mathieu and Mo Walker also stepped up in crunch time by making big plays. This team never wilted like a lot of Gophers teams have when the adversity struck and Furman kept taking the lead by 1 or 2 on mostly contested shots.

It will be interesting to see if Gaston does end up playing this year. I assume the staff would have wanted to get him in this game and the UNC-W game to get him some court time before B1G play.

Glad the team avoided a bad loss tonight, they have to dodge one more "no-win" game and then it's on to conference play. Need to win that game at Purdue for sure.

Mathieu-Had some dumb turnovers, but stepped it up when we needed him. Had a couple big layips down the stretch.

Andre-0-4 from three. It was bound to happen, he probably wasn't going to shoot 51% from three all season. Got into foul trouble early in the second half and sat until about 4 minutes left.

Morris-He was playing well early, but then reverted JUCO shot selection.

King- Scored I think it was 15 points in the first half. Good offensive game from him.

Mason-Saved our ass by hitting some clutch threes in the second half.

EE-Typical EE game. Scored some bunnies, got some rebounds, missed some free throws, and looked like a crazy man talking to himself with his giant unkepmt beard.

Bakary-Thought he played solid for what little time he played. He has the potential to be a good rebounder. Scored with a nice little jump hook. Got to the line 5 times. You can see his potential these ladt two games, but has a ways to go.

Walker-Did have a big three point play down the stretch, but wasn't his best game. Got blocked a couple of times when he didn't go up strong enough, and bobbled some passes. The guy he was guarding scored a season high 18 points.

Overall, our half-court D was probably our biggest problem tonight. Furman did hit two prayer 3-pointers in end of shot clock situations and had a very lucky tip-in. The last 5 of the first half and most of the second half, we did have a tough time getting stops. Definitely something to work on before Big Ten play starts.

Thanks for the breakdown death clutch.

Did you just go see them? I heard they were back at the Zoo in the past month.

Yes, they hadn't been there in about 8-10 years. I know they haven't been playing as often as they used too but are making the tour again in the last 8 months or so.

GH'ers complain if it's a blowout. GH'ers complain if it's close. Sheesh.

i ran into an old friend in the the concourse before the Seattle game, and he said he was hoping for a game he didn't leave with 10 minutes left because it was a blowout. So last night was for him. A too-close game against someone that should be beat by 25. But then again, anytime you can beat a team that makes the shots they were making, count yourself lucky.

Our bigs have the hand strength of a 6 year old girl. It's amazing how often two or three fingers are able to knock the ball out of their hands.

Agree. Mo had a really bad game - I think he had something like three bobbles in a row there in the beginning of the second half, and his D was atrocious. The curse of the Manziel money sign, perhaps.

I wonder how much Andre's turf toe impacted his game? Nice to see the other guards step up when he has an off game, though.

Wouldn't it have been nice to have a freshman PG like Mason back when Al went down and Tubby had to try the freshman Mav at the helm? As I recall, we ended up with Hoff playing point, which almost completely negated his big-shot ability. I think we would have been dancing that year, instead of the trainwreck it turned in to.

We were ranked #15 in the nation, with wins over North Carolina and #1 ranked Purdue. It was a real shame what happened to that team.

Wait. Andre is hurt? Again? I hadn't heard about the turf toe.

I think the Mo talk on this board might make my head explode this winter. It wasn't "a bad game." He is weak with the ball on offense and is not tough on defense, that's the baseline of what we're going to get. Hopefully he does enough other stuff to balance it out in a given game. Truly drives me nuts though. For me, Mo's "that guy" on this year's team that I find myself screaming at every game because of some dumb or weak-*ss play, usually getting the ball knocked out of his hand or having somebody slip by him to grab a rebound and score.

Three thoughts:
1. This game reminds me of two weeks ago, when my daughter's team found themselves in a dogfight with East Ridge. That's when you find out what you're made of. My daughter's team did what they needed to do to come out on top, and the Gophers did the same.
2. Nate Mason has gone from somebody who we agree will make a lot of big shots for this team in his career to someone who has now already made some big shots for this team.
3. Rebounding and interior defense are a huge concern, especially considering what looms in the conference schedule. Hate to say it - I really do - but our centers are a joke right now.

Couldn't have been happier? Yikes. I guess we'll find out if he's right.
This based on the fact that it made the team address some needed areas. Said differently, this game taught the team some things coach had been trying to get across in a very effective way. ie. he said that Mathieu had been playing for assists rather than playing the game that came to him and this shifted in this game. I saw what he was talking about. As far as preseason games go, they learned more from this game than a blow out, for sure. They'll bring more forward from this game than the Seattle game.

That's why I'm confident we will be ok at the 5. I've got a saying and it's spoken smoother than written,

"You're never as bad as you think you are at your worst, and you're never as good as you think you are at your best."

It's somewhere in the middle. Now EE has shown a prolonged period of mediocrity ever since that OSU game. And amazingly it coincides with the increase in Mo minutes too (Chicken/Egg syndrome?). My point is this, both have shown what they can be. I'm of the opinion that at some point this season, and hopefully its soon, they both get it together at the same time and figure out a way to coexist on the stat sheet. Both are very good B1G 10 centers, and they need to start playing like it.
