***OFFICIAL GOPHERS VS FURMAN IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Furman was lights out. Most of the times we play them they would not shoot nearly as well.

Are you kidding? It wasn't pretty, but I loved watching this game. Obviously it would have been better to blow them out, but I don't know how you can look at this game and not think that it was entertaining.

It would have been one thing if this was a sloppy turnover fest and we played down to our competition. I would argue that this was a game where Furman played up to us. Gotta tip the cap to them for playing their guts out. We showed resolve, played through some remarkable plays by Furman and we had some different people step up at different moments. You need a game like this to kind of "wake up" rather than coast into Big 10 play. Now hopefully we blow out whomever we play before next weeks Big 10 opener which is for some stupid reason on during the day on New Years....

man that was scary as hell. Gotta give credit to Furman.

I know a lot of you wanted a blowout, but truth is, Furman was shooting it lights out during that stretch. And although it wasn't pretty, it wasn't ugly either as the Gophers didn't play that bad. Furman just happened to get really hot in the second half. 3 point shooting was off, but to win a game like this, it shows resilience. It also shows that Coach Pitino finally realizes that he should have Mason in there when the game is on the line.

You win a game against an inferior opponent that can't miss from 3 by 10 points and we complain? Good teams find a way to win. There are plenty of positives to take from this game yet many will want to focus on the negatives. I bet MSU wishes they won their last game by 10 points rather than posting up a big L.

Furman shot really well from the outside, we didn't. Considering what has happened with other Big Ten teams lately, I'm not too upset over this. We found a way to win. Learn from it and move on.

Yep, I agree. Had to play most of the second half without Hollins.

3 thoughts:

1. We didn't play well. But I guarantee you that we feel a lot better after not playing well tonight than Purdue did after not playing well and losing at home.
2. While he may not admit it, I bet Pitino would rather have seen his team fight through a bit of adversity, grind out a win and learn something different tonight than if this was another 30 point laugher. Obviously there will be a lot he didn't like when watching the film, but we got more out of this game than we did the last few.
3. It was great to see Nate Mason hit some clutch shots. Love that kids potential.

Go Gophers!!

As a third party observer who just wants to see a good game, I would agree with you. As a fan who loves this team to death? There is little to be happy with about going wire to wire with Furman.

How many of Furman's points were off terrible defensive plays? How many were absurd super-long-distance contested 3's, crazy bounces, or other flukes? I'd wager that there were more of the latter than the former.

We scored 80+ points for the sixth time in the past six games. Even against crappy opponents, that's a reason to be happy.

I think that last steal was because lil Dre was pissed off about Furman fouling with 3 second left in an 8 point game.

Just glad to be able to get out with a win and avoid the bad home less that it seems a number of teams already have.

The Gophers still have the second longest home non conference winning streak. Only trailing Duke (by about 70 wins).

Hard to find much good to talk about when you let an awful Furman team take you to the wire. Win or lose, this is pretty darn disappointing.

A) I don't think Furman's 'awful' relative to many of our non-conference cupcakes.

B) They were literally hitting everything. Guarded NBA threes as the shot clock ran out (at least twice) random 4 ft volleyball tips, etc. Some nights the basket is an ocean and it was for them tonight.

All that really matters is we didn't lose. And Nate Mason and Little Dre showed some onions. That makes me feel better if it comes down to a tight game in West Lafayette and thereafter.

Agree with all of this. Furman certainly made a lot of shots they probably don't usually make. Glad that Lil Dre and Nate Mason picked it up at the end and bailed the team out of what would have otherwise been a really bad loss. Still, have to think there isn't a whole lot of smiling from either Pitino or the team after this one. They let up coming out in the second half and Furman (a team that is now a whopping 2-8 on the season), very nearly made them pay for it.

Pitino sounded like he couldn't have been happier in the post game. Said it was a game we really needed.

True. But UNC-W is no pushover. I'd rather they got a wake-up tonight than Saturday. If they play like this again they will probably lose.

Couldn't have been happier? Yikes. I guess we'll find out if he's right.

Went to the Capitals - Senators game instead of streaming this game on espn 3.. Would definitely appreciate a brief recap.. Who played well, who poorly, etc. I see King and Mason had the points. No Buggs in the box score?

Thanks in advance...

Mathieu-Had some dumb turnovers, but stepped it up when we needed him. Had a couple big layips down the stretch.

Andre-0-4 from three. It was bound to happen, he probably wasn't going to shoot 51% from three all season. Got into foul trouble early in the second half and sat until about 4 minutes left.

Morris-He was playing well early, but then reverted JUCO shot selection.

King- Scored I think it was 15 points in the first half. Good offensive game from him.

Mason-Saved our ass by hitting some clutch threes in the second half.

EE-Typical EE game. Scored some bunnies, got some rebounds, missed some free throws, and looked like a crazy man talking to himself with his giant unkepmt beard.

Bakary-Thought he played solid for what little time he played. He has the potential to be a good rebounder. Scored with a nice little jump hook. Got to the line 5 times. You can see his potential these ladt two games, but has a ways to go.

Walker-Did have a big three point play down the stretch, but wasn't his best game. Got blocked a couple of times when he didn't go up strong enough, and bobbled some passes. The guy he was guarding scored a season high 18 points.

Overall, our half-court D was probably our biggest problem tonight. Furman did hit two prayer 3-pointers in end of shot clock situations and had a very lucky tip-in. The last 5 of the first half and most of the second half, we did have a tough time getting stops. Definitely something to work on before Big Ten play starts.

Agreed. Their 3 point shooting was tremendous and ours was off. Furman also played some pretty good defense at points throughout the game.

I agree with Homer Drew who said that this was a good win for the Gophers. They took a mid-major's best game and lost the lead but prevailed. Michigan and Purdue failed to do that twice and others in the conference failed to do it at least once. One more pre-conference game to go. It shouldn't be too easy but hopefully it will be easier than this one. I'd like to see Gaston get a chance to play.

Wow - that was a lot of work!
Furman was 7-10 from 3 at one point in the second half. It was a fun game to be at, and it was great seeing Mason cooly nail those 3's. The large crowd came to life, Pitini fanned the flames and we had a taste of what BT atmosphere will be
Someone did a good job of scouting Walker and they pretty much neutralized him. He has some moves that open him up for hacks and steals and they made him pretty miserable.

Wish we could've seen Gastooooooon tonight! Oh well, hopefully Saturday.

It doesn't seem like he has that type of personality , but he could have done the Sam Cassell walk after that 4th three.

Mo was badly outplayed for quite a while. He did step it up toward the end though. Made some big free throws and also finally got some stops on defense. Buggs did not do anything. Made a really bad turnover; went straight to the bench and was never see again.
