I would guess a couple more will leave and a couple more arrive after the bowl game and into the new year.

He played every snap this year at LT other than maybe part of one drive against Iowa.

I don't know what his grades/PFF analysis were.


But what did you not already like about his performance this season?

Not sure about the scholarship implications but added him to the list.

Do you think he was exceptional, really good, or even above average? I don't. I think he was "Ok". I'm certainly not down on him. He's young still, did fine for a new starter, and has potential galore, but I can't understand singling him out as someone to recognize at this point, other than for his potential.

This is from memory, but I believe he was our lowest graded OL in run blocking for the season, and while better in pass pro, was no a world beater there either. Again he was "Ok", and undoubtedly has potential, but I think it's safe to say he was our 4th, or 5th best starter on the OL this season. Hardly a guy I would single out, other than for his potential.

@Costa Rican Gopher you clearly know what you're talking about with OL. I knew that from previous posts, so I wanted your assessment. I did not particularly have one for him, and didn't watch him often.

This is really what I "know" about our starting OL this year:

JMS - known All-American, will be draft pick
Carroll - started all year at RT and I don't think missed a drive (other than garbage time)? Some people complained about him at times.
Ersery - same as above, played all year, but I don't ever remember most folks complaining about him
Ruschmeyer - again similar, seemed to play every drive, don't remember most folks complaining
Filaga - played a lot, but had some ups and downs based on that Boe subbed in for him at times.


Not much of an assessment there. But, they say if you never get your name called out as an OL, you're doing your job.

Mind posting a link? I'd like to see what the grades of the other O linemen were in those games. I realize the limitations of the eye test, but I saw Carroll getting routinely beat by pass rushers almost every game. And it seemed like the Gophers had a lot more success running behind Ruschmeyer/Ersery side compared to Filiaga/Carroll.

Not intending to pee in anyone's coffee, particularly when I don't know the source. But when I see the same dude getting highest and lowest grades in different games, I wonder about the grading system and the impact of things like play calls and quality of matchups (in this case DE).

I think most would agree Ersery & Carroll were the 4th & 5th best OL this past season. That's evidenced in JMS being named 1st team All-B1G, Ruschmeyer & Filiaga being named 3rd team All-B1G, and Ersery & Caroll both being named Honorable Mention All-B1G. You could argue Ersery was better than Carroll, or vice-versa. Either way I expect big things from both moving forward.

Fair enough. I'd put my money on Ersery having a better football career than any of those guys (with the exception of JMS, for obvious reasons). I guess we'll see.

I guess one thing is: it’s a lot easier to get exposed with your pants down when you’re doing pass-pro than when you’re doing run blocking. So perhaps why it’s easy to notice the difference between Carroll and Wrsery?

I agree. Looking in my crystal ball, I think Ersery could become a 1st team All-B1G selection. I think Carroll will be better than this year when he was Honorable-Mention, but I'm not sure he's a 1st team talent.

I will say this about Carroll: He got much better as the season went on, and finished very strong. It makes me wonder if he was still suffering some effects from his knee injury early on, and got more confident on it as the season progressed? Or, maybe he just needed a while to get used to our scheme, or adjust to the speed of the B1G?

Most people seem to think, or wish, that Carroll gets moved inside to Guard. I'm going on record as saying I won't be shocked if he starts at RT he rest of his career.

Good point. I also think it was a self fulfilling prophecy to some extent. Carroll obviously struggled at the beginning of the season with speed rushers. Because of that, opposing defenses often sent their quickest pass rushers at Carroll, and seemed to blitz to his side most of he time as well.

Lewis to RG? Or your thoughts on that position if we don’t get any more transfers later this spring?

Again, I haven't looked at the grades, but Carroll just seemed to have lead feet, even late in the year. As far as improvements later in the year, could it have been compensation with play calls, or a different QB? I mean, there's still the fact you pointed out that he was voted HM, so people who pay a lot of attention to this concluded he was better than average.

I'm among those that would like to see him move inside, which could hide some of his pass blocking issues. But who knows how good the backup is, and PJ's track record is to stick with the status quo. So Carroll staying at RT is probably a safe bet.

You have to be light on your feet and athletic, to have success against speed rushers on the edge. No doubt.

But conversely, you have to be very sturdy and low center of gravity to have success against the big boys on the inside.
