Official 2023 Gophers Football Recruiting Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Rumors

From the Jaxon Howard thread (assume this was for Juniors day):

So how about the other three he is with?

John Barrow - Cooper - no 247 rating - no shown offers

Keenan Wilson - Eagan - no 247 rating - no shown offers

Martin Owusu - Prior Lake - no 247 rating - shows Northern Iowa, Wyoming, Illinois State, and C Michigan offers

Particular the last guy, his twitter also shows some Nebraska recruiting pictures for whatever that is worth.
Wilson is a complete animal, would expect an offer out to him soon

Minnesota could field a competitive olympic hockey team and compete just fine as its own nation. Not saying we'd win the gold, but we'd compete with lots of countries.
Wasn't that what Herb did in 81. Yes I know they were not all from MN.

If this is him committing, he would be an awesome addition to our class and OL for 2023. If this is somehow about Jaxson Howard committing, it's time for some backflips!
I assume he is going to commit as it’s been rumored he’s been a heavy lean for some time now.

They're just waiting for ..... ??

I'd offer all three of these guys, right now. Not sure what the upside is in waiting.
Not sure all three are worthy of an offer to be honest. Upside is you get to evaluate them more and see if you have a shot at other guys you like more.

Sure, maybe not all three. But he specifically mentioned Wilson. Why does he not have a scholly offer at this moment?

Not trying to be a jerk or a gotcha question. Like, is the answer legitimately "they haven't had time to get around to it yet ..."?

Or maybe they want to invite him to a combine or summer camp and see how he does there, first? Could easily be the answer, just curious.

I don't think there is any rush. He is undersized to be honest, as far as height. Doesn't look like anyone else has offered him yet. If you don't have to worry about him committing anywhere else anytime soon, why not wait and get more scouting data from his senior year? I'm more curious about Elinneus Davis, DT from Moorhead.

That's awesome! Congrats to Jerome Williams! Row the Boat, SKI-U-MAH !

Good lord man, Howard looks like he could suit up in the NFL tomorrow and hold his own. These are the kind of physically developed and gifted kids the OSUs and Bamas of the world sign routinely and MN very rarely (if ever).

Michigan State just plucked the number two player in the state of Iowa.

Bolded: was he even at Junior Day here recently??

If not, then clearly something is off, as in perhaps the family has made it very clear they want nothing to do with the Gophers?? Otherwise, it makes no sense. Offers from Iowa St, Kansas, Washington, Illinois, (and NDSU), but not us? #3 player in the state, as of very early ratings.

Yeah I usually jump to absolutely worst case Ontario thinking, never could be conflicting events going on

It's early for rankings. It looks like 247 has not yet evaluated Wisconsin at all.

I think he looks like a decent prospect, but to be fair, Fleck has had no problem letting some of the higher ranked instate guys go without an offer. This past year he didn't offer the number 3 and 6 players. 2020 he passed on 4 and 5 instate. 2019 he passed on 6 and 7 (Omar Brown and Evan Hull). 2018 he passed on 1, 7 and 8. #8 being Trey Lance, but number 1 David Alston didn't play in 3 years at Nebraska and is now a rotational player at Montana State. Not sure if Davis was at junior day, but Fleck has taken his time offering some instate guys in the past as well.

Yeah, there are still people that get way too invested in where a recruit is from. Granted, we all want to see as many of the top instate kids end up here as possible due to the local connection. But if the staff doesn't feel they are a great fit or a top priority they shouldn't just offer them based on where they are from.

In the end, I personally could care less where a player is from as long as they can play and help the team.

By the time we get every single Minnesota recruit consistently… We will probably decide not to take them all.

just one of those things.

The last sentence goes without saying ... because at that point, we're talking about who each teams starters (and major contributors) are. Of course, I don't care if they're from Timbuktu if we're winning.

This is recruiting, and at that, only talking about offering.

We and a lot of schools put out a huge number of offers, far more than we could ever sign. So just worry it could seem disrespectful, when Iowa St, Kansas, and other P5 have offered you, but your home in-state school hasn't?

What does Canada have to do with it?

Just a guess but you probably have to be careful about the offers you extend to anyone you are not 100% sold on but especially if that player is in-state.

In-State kids would seem like the most likely to quickly accept an offer from their home state school if that appeals to them at all.
