Official 2022 Gophers Football Recruiting Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Rumors

Short version: Preferred walk-ons arrive to college with a roster spot guaranteed for them. Walk-ons, however, arrive to college without a guaranteed roster spot. Neither preferred walk-ons nor walk-ons receive a scholarship their first year on campus. They both have the opportunity to compete for them in later years, but preferred walk-ons are often first in line for available scholarships.

Also. Doesn't a preferred walk on start practices with the team earlier than a regular walk on?

Nelson and Alvarez are the only 2 in the current class that feel like a bit of a reach in terms of projecting out what they could be vs. what they are now. But easy to see what the team likes about both of them.

As has been consistent with Fleck classes, the vast majority of the commits have legit power 5 interest from other schools.

This has the look of a depth class. Might lack some in the heavy hitters at the top but will be filled with guys that can potentially contribute to the team in meaningful ways, even if they don't end up being star players.

Of course there is still a ways to go, and there also remains the strong potential that guys will see significant ratings boosts over the course of the 21 season as the sites play catchup.
These guys are mostly developmental players with the hope that you will find the next Boye Mafes, Blake Cashmans, David Cobbs, and so on. At a minimum, you will have depth and excellent practice players. It takes the whole 100 players or so roster and non roster to build the team success.

Visits list no longer shows Heyer visiting tomorrow.

Also looks like the LB that visited two weekends ago committed to Indiana.

Other than the local kid Nelson who committed early and Alvarez who is coming off injury, they all have at least one P5 offer. I’m pretty intrigued by the wrs and cbs even though they aren’t rated high. White and Hoskins look dynamic, Kelly and Gousby look like St Juste clones and Watson can fly.
Nelson and Alvarez are both big, rangy, strong in-state kids who are good multi-sport athletes. Alvarez was injured. Both are probably development projects, but with decent, long-term upsides. I’d like to take a couple of such kids from among accomplished in-state athletes in any year when practical. As local kids, they usually have a strong incentive to prove themselves. Kind of like the offer to Purcell for 2021.

3* DL Anthony Smith (Shippensburg, PA) is coming to the University of Minnesota!

Nice, buzz seemed solid on him committing. Big kid with a nice offer list. Like how this class is filling out.

Of the top 50 ranked teams in football recruiting on 247, only two have lower average rated commits... Vanderbilt and Illinois.
Hopefully, we are better evaluators than 247 is.

As many have mentioned already, the rankings will change quite a bit over the next few months. Evaluations have been tough with the odd covid seasons, and lack of camps. We currently have 3 recruits that are unrated factoring into the low rating.

Damn you Spencer Alvarez! You are ruining our ranking!

Wait 6 months and then judge.

This class is bad, and there isn’t a ways to go. They only have space for 2-3 more recruits. This will be a bottom of the barrel Big Ten class. A huge drop off from last year.

The ratings will change for every team, and recruits throughout the entire country haven’t been evaluated as much due to Covid. Our avg player ranking is one of the worst of all P5 teams as 60’s guy noted.

This class has a higher rating than the 2016 'empire class' that included Coughlin, Seth Green, Kamal Martin, AWJr, Tyler Johnson, Conner Olson, Durr, Schleuter amongst others.

If recruiting has picked up so much under PJ that you now view this as a disappointment that says a lot about the influx of talent in the program.

I'm going to let it play out before judging. Plenty of P5 offers throughout the class so it's not like the Gophers are the only one in on these guys.

This is not a bad class and anyone who thinks that it is, isn't paying attention to offers. We have a handful of kids with top offers and everyone else has P5 offers. This would be a top class for any other Minnesota coach. Is this a game changing recruiting class - NO (not going to change the perception of our team). However, it is still a very solid class that will keep the boat moving forward. Next year will be a true test of staying power.

PJ has been our coach for 5 years. No one cares how it compares with any past staff. It’s a huge drop off from his 2021 class.

Based on what? Your in-depth analysis of hours of game film of each recruit? Enlighten us all to specifically what the shortfalls of the class are (besides "it's what 247 tells me to think").

Maybe you’re right, but look at the 3 kids Wisconsin got commits from today. Hardly any other P5 offers. Penn State just got a commit from a relative no namer, etc... difficult year to evaluate

Yup. I was just going to mention that. Wisc has its own handful of 3* guys with few big offers, and some with no noteworthy offers. I doubt they just chose to phone it in on recruiting with those guys.

When our recruiting rankings are good, it’s ‘way to go staff, we sure are recruiting well.’ When our recruiting rankings aren’t good, it’s “trust the coaches” and the “staff knows way more than you.” You win either way.

And the Gophers beat out Penn St. for Smith! They might as well opt out of college football.

Probably just depends on what type of person you are.

When faced with the unknown, do you just hope for the best or worry the sky is falling?

🤷🏻‍♂️

The 2021 class was based off of finished rankings with no unrated players. The 2022 class is based off preliminary ratings with 3 unrated players, and one lowly rated player coming off of an injury. All of those guys plus others will be bumped up.

This same discussion comes up every summer since Fleck has been the coach. He gets the majority of his commits in the summer, several being under the radar, then everyone points out how low the average rating is and that the class isn't that great. By signing day it all works out. Usually he loses a few fast risers to bigger named schools too.

So you'll speak bad of the recruiting... for what reason exactly? Tell us more about the formula you use to declare this class "bad" and "a huge drop off."
