Not sure final scores are the best metric for illustrating the point that we are getting more competitive with our rivals. That said, watching the Wisconsin games from the past few years there is no doubt that the talent gap has narrowed significantly between us and them. Same can be said for Iowa.

Now Fleck just has to figure out how to pull out more victories against those two schools to really help the program take the next step up the ladder.

We have bumped up from also ran to fringe contender in the West. Find a way to start beating Iowa and Wisconsin consistently and the program will become a legit yearly contender for the West. From this point on talent really shouldn't be an issue as our classes have been on par with both those schools over the past few seasons. Now we find out if we are bringing in the right guys to get us over the hump.

Honestly Iowa football has been really impressive the last two years is the biggest takeaway to me. They’ve had a revival. It is like it’s 2008 again.


6-2 this year. But they haven’t won fewer than 8 games since 2014

IIRC, most of the games they lost to these opponents is not by a whole lot.

This step was taken under Kill --- in '13, '14, and '16 we fridge or actual contenders for the West

Which is because Bohl's longest tenured assistant from NDSU, in fact I believe his only remaining from the 2013 staff that he brought with him, is becoming the head coach at Montana State.

Great move by Bohl. Will run the exact same offense, knows it as well as anyone, and was a QB himself in his playing days.
 

Iowa just lost their offensive line coach and will also lose their running backs coach by tomorrow. Big holes to fill. Will miss their running backs coach as he was their top recruiter.

Absolutely. Iowa had 7, 7, & 4 win seasons during Kill's years. They haven't won less than 8 games during Fleck's

I’d rather have them lose some starting linemen and their #1 RB.

No more dreadful than in 2020. Easily the worst overall performance of the season. Coaching, playing, all around.

Saw a note in the District 196 Spotlight magazine that gets sent to families in the district that Ratzlaff will be playing both football and hockey for Wisconsin. I wonder if he would have been allowed to do that here and if that played a role in why he ended up at Wisconsin. Might be old news but don't remember seeing it posted that he was going to be playing both sports there.

Seems like it would be really tough to come off a big ten football season and transition immediately into hockey. Plus it would also seem like he would need to miss a big chunk of the hockey season as they get started while football is still going on.

Any of you historians know if we had someone pull off a football/hockey combo here? I know Decker played Football and Baseball and we have had some do Football and Track over the years. But can't think of any playing both football and hockey off the top of my head.

Bryant Allen played football and basketball here for a little while. Not sure about any football and hockey combos.

The overlapping nature of the seasons is going ot make it really tough. He's going to miss a considerable portion of the hockey season and have to choose between spring football and the end of the hockey season as well. I've never played hockey, but going from cleats to skates (while going to school at the same time) sounds like a real challenge. Every day will be leg day in the weight room.
 

Noel Jenke played 3 sports (football, hockey, baseball) for the Gophers back in the late 60's. But that was a long time ago. Wouldn't work or be allowed today.
 

And here's one more: Walt Bowser played 3 sports (football, basketball, tennis) during his time at the U (1967 - 71). After law school, he later served as a Ramsey County (Minn.) District Court Judge.
 

Obviously Dave Winfield pulled off the football, basketball, baseball combo. But yeah, Football and Hockey seems like it would be a really hard one to do, and hockey would definitely seem like the sport that would get the short end of the stick big time (pun intended). I know Ratzlaff is supposed to be a really special hockey player so maybe they feel like a partial season with him is worth it.

Aaron Osterman played maybe one season of basketball (mostly garbage time if I remember)? Was a good receiver.

While Winfield was drafted by the Vikings, I don't believe he ever played football for the Gophers.
 

Winfield didn't play college football.

Sandy Stephens' younger brother, Ray, played both football and basketball. Didn't play a lot in either sport, but man, did that guy have some hops on the basketball court.

Going way back, there were a lot of football/baseball guys. Paul Giel comes to mind as one of the best. But that was before spring practice became a staple in football.

Going even further back Bud Grant was a three-sport, nine-letterman athlete in football, basketball, and baseball an All-Big Ten honors in football twice while a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

Man. If they play in a NY6 bowl game or something similar, he's missing half the season every year. That's going to be a weird move from a chemistry standpoint in hockey
