Official 2019 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

I'm not feeling nearly as good about this class as I was a month ago. Here is how I would rank the position groups as they stand today:

QB - B/B+ Adding 2 QBs I think is the right move as we didn't get a prep scholarship QB last class. Clark seems like a nice get, but Duggan or Bachmeier were needed to get an A.
RB - D - I have no idea what we are doing at RB in this class. What position is Potts? What position is Wiley? 2 recruits that haven't played football since they were sophs. We lost Brock to Iowa St of all places. We had 3 high quality backs in for OVs (Doerue, Barlow and Brock) but couldn't seal the deal with any of them.
WR - A- Nnamdi looks like a big time playmaker. The final grade will be based on who else we add.
OL - D Guedet appears to be a very good o-line recruit, but I'm a believer that you should add at least 3 O-linemen in each class. We had 2 4-stars in-state and it appears we will miss on both. Fleck needs to pull a surprise here.
DL - A Bargy and Harris are maybe the 2 best prep DEs that we have ever added. Lots of DTs, including some promising JUCOs. There is a lot to like with this d-line class.
LB - B- Willis and Gordon both appear to be solid but not spectacular
CB - A- Nubin and Brown are a really nice tandem at corner. Both are physical and fast.
S - C Not really sure what to think about Robinson with his limited footage.

I'd probably give the class a B- at this stage. I see the need to still add a playmaker at RB, a WR, 2 o-linemen, possibly a DT and a safety. That's 5-6 additional spots, and I think we have 2-3 remaining. Another reason I really don't like giving scholarships to specialists...

Possible, but I'm pretty high on QB we got. I think this class could be pretty good

I think that your assessment is accurate, as of now. We should know more after the weekend of July 27th-29th. Barlow is visiting TCU, and the Gophers are supposed to have quite a few unofficial visitors then. Of the 3 problem areas mentioned, I'm still hopeful about the OL. If Barlow will commit here; I think that we must take him even with Potts and Wiley. Finally, Clark led a team with a mediocre record much farther than expected. If that doesn't sound like a great QB for the Gophers, I don't know what does.

No love for our long snapper?

Just asking out of pure ignorance but will teams like Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia etc use scholarships on Kickers? Maybe they attract high quality walk on's?

Looks like we're out of Bryce Benhart derby, sounds like Nebraska, Wisconsin, Tenn are his finalist. I'm guessing Sconi

We were technically in the derby, but from what I've heard our gate never opened allowing us to run. It sounds like he's taking an official to Nebby this fall.

I think most teams occasionally offer specialists. Didn't Harbaugh have a sleepover at a kickers house a few years ago?

I don't mind giving a scholarship to a top-rated kicker or punter every 4-5 years. My issue is that we just took a kicker last year. And that we also have a long snapper committed.

I agree that Clark is a good QB recruit for us. We'd probably all be much more excited about him if we weren't so close to landing Duggan or Bachmeier.

Who are the unofficial visitors later this month?

I can only answer for Georgia because I’m a Bulldog fan as well. UGA did use a scholarship on a kicker in the 2018 class. They also put a former walk-on kicker on scholarship last year.

per Randy:

First, coach P.J. Fleck continues to assemble a strong recruiting class for 2019, and he received a verbal commitment over the weekend from three-star athlete Cameron Wiley of Desert Pines High School in Las Vegas. Wiley, 6-2 and 191 pounds, has 4.56-second speed in the 40-yard dash and projects as a running back for the Gophers. Wiley had offers from 12 other schools, including Arizona, Oregon, Utah and Washington State of the Pac-12, along with TCU, BYU and Kansas.

Wiley’s pledge gives the Gophers 20 verbal commitments for the Class of 2019, and Fleck’s class ranks 24th nationally and sixth in the Big Ten in the 247Sports.com composite rankings of major national recruiting services. In the Big Ten West, only Purdue is ahead of Minnesota.

The only name I have so far is Smith-Ngoba, Clark's 4-star 2020 receiver. I have several guesses, but nothing else that's been confirmed in print.

Not surprised. Happens.

Per last week's Sports Huddle, Fleck mentioned a big unofficial visit at the end of the month. Anyone have insight as to who that is?

Ah, Clark's teammate. 2020 recruit, however. Was hoping for another big name for this year, but two 4-stars to start next year's class would be epic!

Who's the first??

From my view things looking great. The stepping stones will be turning into giant steps shortly. Just need to win "baby" this season.

Jermaine Johnson now the #1 ranked JC player in the country by 247. Would have been nice.

Any chance w a great season that Nnamdi gets bumped to a 4*?
Would be nice to have 2 classes in a row w a 4* receiver (Bateman)

What dictates the services to bump a player at this stage of the process? Is it on the field performance, general exposure (for a kid from a low profile program), recent offers (half joking), Growth spurt?

I know there is always some shifting that occurs, but the bulk of the evals have already been completed and too much shifting would undermine the value of the services during the more important early stages.

Only the fans and media look at the ratings, so I think it's safe to say they are as accurate as the weekly polls during the season. Coaches evaluate players directly. That said, as more coaches evaluate (ie - more offers) there's a chance for ratings adjustments by the sites making the claims.

just thinking out loud here - but if a kid missed last season due to injury, and then they blow up on the camp circuit and really start turning heads, I could see where a kid might be re-evaluated under those circumstances.

Camp performances

per Sid:

• The Gophers’ 2019 football class currently ranks 24th in the country according to the 247Sports website, which also shows how competitive recruiting is in the Big Ten. Ahead of the Gophers in the rankings are Michigan (No. 5), Ohio State (6), Penn State (19), Michigan State (21) and Purdue (22).

Go Gophers!!

We'll see were things eventually shake out...only Rutgers has a lower AVG than the Gophs right now. Still feels like Gophs can end up around the same place as last year, most likely with a lower overall AVG. Need to win this year to continue the momentum, though.

Nebby just added a high 3* that helped bump up its AVG.

You shouldn't be half joking, the offers that a recruit gets heavily influence the rating.
