Official 2019 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

You must be referring to a consensus 4-star or 247's composite because several of the 2019 guys are 4-star on at least one service. The ESPN system is the anchor for most and honestly, that system is garbage for kids outside of the top 200 or so.

Pretty sure poster is using the 247 composite, which backs up the post. No question 2018 was better on paper than 2019. I am very happy with Fleck's recruiting these last two years, and think he can build a consistent top 20 program with classes ranked 35-45 and then developing that talent.

He needs to win to maintain that level of recruiting though. Has a chance to do something special this year, but if Gophs end up 6-6 or 7-5, recruiting will tick down again, like it did from 2018 to 2019.

I clarified your statement for brevity and accuracy.

per Megan:

The Gophers garnered a new commitment Tuesday evening.

Michigan graduate transfer Benjamin St-Juste is a 6-3, 196-pound cornerback from Montreal and announced his decision on Twitter. He was a four-star 2017 recruit.

His freshman year at Michigan, he played in 12 games, mainly on special teams. He missed all of last season with an injury, and with a NCAA waiver, has three years of eligibility still remaining. He's also eligible to play immediately this 2019 season since he has graduated.

If he has three years of eligibility remaining and he's already graduated, he can easily get all of his Master's work done and start working on his PhD.

I wonder if you can transfer again for free to start post doctorate work somewhere else...

Very impressive. Sounds like he put his down time last year to very good use! Hope he's Plug and Play!

per MLive:

St-Juste announced earlier this month plans to leave Michigan, just days after taking to Instagram to dispute Michigan’s claim he actively took a medical retirement. He did not play for the Wolverines in 2018, though the nature of his injury situation is unclear.

St-Juste has not returned a message from MLive seeking comment.

The Montreal, Quebec, native was sidelined for the 2018 Outback Bowl with a hamstring injury, after playing in 12 games as a true freshman in 2017. St-Juste was granted a medical hardship waiver by the NCAA, according to a source, giving him three years of eligibility. And because he graduated, he’ll be eligible to play in the fall.

A Michigan spokesman said earlier this month that St-Juste has not been medically cleared to play football at the school in 2019.

He was once a four-star prospect and ranked No. 38 among cornerbacks in the 2017 recruiting class by 247Sports. Now, St-Juste will get another crack at it under head coach P.J. Fleck.

Michigan and Minnesota are not scheduled to play during the 2019 season. The next football game between the two programs is set for Oct. 17, 2020, in Minneapolis.

per Megan:

-In the wake of the Gophers releasing junior college player Gervarrius Owens from his national letter of intent so the safety could instead attend Houston this fall, Fleck explained this:
“It’s just the evolution of recruiting. Guys who do the right things will stay, and we’ll continue to uphold the integrity of our culture and our program. Anybody who decides to go, just like anywhere in the country, where people leave programs, or people go somewhere else that might be a better opportunity or better fit for them, we support them 100 percent. We want people to have opportunities. Just because your opportunity didn’t work out here doesn’t mean it can’t work out somewhere else. And for every one that goes, one comes in. And we’re very fortunate for the young men that will be coming here as well.”

Rochester Post Bulletin: R-P grad Carlson switching to Minnesota

Former Rushford-Peterson athletic sensation Noah Carlson is trading in his track and field spikes for football ones.

Carlson, who was on a track and field scholarship at Michigan the last two years (redshirted his first year), is going the football route now, according to R-P head football coach Davin Thompson. Thompson said that Carlson has transferred to Minnesota and will practice with the team this fall but not be eligible to play in games until the 2020 seasons, per NCAA rules.

Carlson ran for 2,785 yards (199 per game) with 41 touchdowns in leading his team in 2016 to the Class A state championship game. Also a defensive back, Carlson was later named the Minnesota Associated Press Football Player of the Year.

Carlson was just as impressive in track and field. As a junior, Carlson won state titles in the 200, long jump and triple jump and flirted with the triple jump state record. He was sidelined with a hamstring injury to close out his senior track and field season.

Carlson debated whether to pursue track and field or football at the college level. The 6-feet-2, 185-pounder settled on track and field after considering the injuries he’d sustained in football.

"Football was something I definitely had some thinking to do about, especially after the past season that I had," Carlson said in an interview in March of 2017, after choosing Michigan and track and field. "But I think back to the injuries (he's had) and decided I was better off taking it easy on my body."

Now, it’s going to be football after all. Thompson said that Carlson missed the camaraderie of the game.

“He missed the team part of it,” Thompson said. “Not that there aren't team things in track and field. But he missed being on a football team.”

Carlson, who was unavailable for this story, figures to be either a wide receiver or a defensive back at Minnesota.
