Official 2016 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

By th way, nobody has answered the question about why Green's ranking was severely dropped as soon as the Oregon rumors started.

How can this be? Haven't we heard the ratings are arrived at by careful camp scouting and tape study? They saw Green, I presume in person and rated him a 91 4 star. Maybe Jshowers scouted him. What did they see that suddenly changed? Or, are they basing their rating on what the Oregon staff apparently thinks, instead of sticking to their guns and their own expert assessment?

Could it be we are seeing ratings fluctuations based on offers and pulled offers? I was told this never happens by some pretty elite football minds here.

After the Snelson rating fiasco, the guys at 247 need to tighten up their ship. It's looking more and more like a clown show.

I've see Drew play Basketball. the kid just glides up and down the court - makes it look like he's not running hard - but he's blowing by people.
I'm not sure he could play D1 hoops- but he's got a D1 FB offer, and I think there's a good chance he could be drafted in baseball. In terms of an all-around athlete, I would put him up in the category with a Barry Wohler. (I was tempted to say Joe Mauer, but considering how much some people dislike Mauer, I thought I'd go with a safer choice.)

I think the folks I was talking with had the same impression. They don't necessarily see him as a D-1 hoops player. It's more that on the court, his raw athleticism just stands out to a greater extent.

Missed the last three quarters hurt last night and has missed games this year. Not sure what the issues been.

Go Gophers!!

State Football starts this week.

6A
Kamal Martin and Burnsville play Maple Grove at Hopkins on Friday.
Eden Prairie plays Totino Grace at Osseo on Friday.
East Ridge plays Wayzata at Edina on Thursday
Lakeville North plays Osseo at Eden Prairie on Thursday.

5A: 3-4 games go head-to head with Gopher game on Saturday. Unfortunately Mankato West, Spring Lake Park, and St. Michael-Albertville are all on same side of unseeded bracket.

4A: Marshall plays (10-0) Stewartville on Friday at Farmington. Hmielewski left injured on Saturday night and they also have Blaise Andries 2017 OL with offers from Kansas, Illinois, and Northwestern. Stewartville has a couple players being looked at by Dakota schools.

1A: Johnson and MPLS North beat Mayer Lutheran and Schlueter on Saturday. They now play at 11am on Saturday at Gustavus against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton H.S

Season Complete:

Barber and Armstrong lost to Maple Grove
Kegel and Chaska lost to Mankato West
Schlueter and Mayer Lutheran lost to Mpls. North.

Had a chance to see the Braham QB, Jon Carlson, play. Very good size, with an accurate arm, and good speed. Should be a great matchup between Braham and North on Nov 7th if they both win on Sat.

I was able to see the North game against Mayor Lutheran last saturday and I have a hard time seeing any single A class team being competitive with them. I knew going into the game that North was going to out athlete them but that was a given. What was surprising was how much more physical in the front 7 they were as they stuffed them at the LOS all day long. Tyler Johnson was able to evade any sort of pressure that they threw at him and the opposing QB never had any time. Also at safety, he never got any action as Mayor never got to the second level. Was nearly impossible evaluate him against that level of competition.

Looks like a couple changes to the official visitor list for this weekend. 24/7 no longer lists West Virginia RB commit Martell Pettaway as visiting this weekend. Believe Tyler Johnson had also planned to take his official this weekend but that has changed with his team playing in the Class A quarterfinals Saturday morning.

They have him listed as an ILB. I assumed he would play outside backer. Is this right or just lazy research?

Pettaway, Smiley, and Corbett backing off the Gophers due to the lackluster season so far?
Not sure on any of the reasons for them not visiting this weekend or if they will reschedule a visit but all 3 have been committed to other schools for a while. Pettaway to West Virginia, Smiley to South Alabama, and Corbett to Troy so it is possible they have just decided they want to stick with their commitments and not visit any other schools.

I don't know why he got a bump the day after he received his Army jersey instead of shortly after the opening when they actually had a chance to evaluate him live but whatever. About time.

In his junior film he played ILB and DE for EP which is where they got it from. He is ideally suited for OLB like De'Vondre but IMO it's more likely he'll end up at WDE in an Alex Kieth role than at middle. Just too tall for MLB where he'll lose the leverage battles and would be a waist of his considerable speed, length and edge rushing potential.

Silly. Most of the greatest MLBs of all time were 6'3" - 6'4".

He's going to play OLB, maybe MLB if he gets big enough as an upperclassman. You want a guy who's going to be 235-240 playing as a rush end? Talk about wasting his talents - he's not Alex Keith or Mario Reese.

I hadn't noticed that Walvenski Aime committed to Florida State a couple of weeks ago. I assume they'd still like to add another DT. Is there any chance they get Amir Watts in for a visit?

Thats about how big Hank currently is, what Kieth played at his first 3 years here and how big Dellatibouderee will most likely be for the majority of his time here. Clayes and Kill have never been afraid to play undersized DEs at any of their stops. Of course they also use(d) OLB guys like Laster and Huff on the edge all the time. Perhaps he could reach 250 anyways. As I've stated previously, OLB is obviously his ideal position but he's not able to utilize his range or ability to contain as well at mike as he would at OLB or DE.

Right - the thing about all of those guys is that they are niche players, recruited to fill a role. Coughlin is one of the highest-rated recruits in the Kill era and is a well-rounded player. They're not going to put him at DE so he can rush the passer on obvious passing downs and get swallowed up by OTs.

What about him being too tall to play MLB?

On the drive home from Nebraska game, I was listening to KFAN.
I was not intently listening but I thought I heard Ray Hitchcock mention that the Gophers had a decision to make next year. Would Coughlin play safety right away or would they let him bulk up to play defensive end.
Anyone else catch this? Is the context accurate?
dude, we get it. get over yourself.

According ESPN.com's depth charts, of the 47 ILBs starting in the NFL, only 8 are at least 6-3 and only two are 6-4. According ourlads.com depth charts, there is only one starting Big Ten LB this year that 6-3, Joe Bolden of Michigan, and none that are 6-4. You can draw your own conclusions from that.

Also I might add that Theiren was only 238 starting at DE in 2013, the year he was second team All Big Ten. Hank will be a two year starter and a 4 year contributor when he graduates, I'd consider that to be more than a niche role.

Julian Huff and DeNiro Laster would prove otherwise.

Right, and they are/were niche players. Which is exactly what I said. Huff has come in strictly to rush the passer on obvious downs - Coughlin is a different caliber of player.
