Daily Herald: Carmel Catholic's Foster finds a fit in Minnesota

"When we were doing the campus tour," Foster said, "we got to see things that not every athlete gets to see on their recruiting trip before they commit."

Foster says he and his family received plenty of academic information to mull over. He met with a college professor, head football coach Jerry Kill and assistant head coach/offensive line coach Matt Limegrover. Foster even got to check out the bowling alley inside the student bookstore.

By day's end, he was bowled over, so to speak. Minnesota had rolled a strike.

Foster gave a verbal commitment to Kill, whose Golden Gophers have won eight games in each of the last two seasons. Last season culminated with a berth in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1. Kill was voted the Big Ten's Hayes-Schembechler coach of the year by the conference's coaches. The Big Ten media also selected the former Northern Illinois coach as its coach of the year.

Minny, welcome Sean Foster, who's hardly mini.

"When I went up there, I really liked it," Foster said. "It was the perfect fir for me and my family. We couldn't stop talking about it. Right then and there, we were like, ‘This would be a great fit for me.' "

Go Gophers!!

A friend showed me the on-line results from a local combine that Northstar Football had last week. 108 MN players, grades 9th-11th signed up and attended, with the biggest recruit being Tyler Johnson from Minneapolis North participating. Tyler's results are as follows: 40 yard digitally timed-5.054 placed #30 overall, 3-cone drill-8.147 placed 50th, Power Push Up-248.3 placed 78th overall, Pro-Agility-4.583 placed 46th, broad jump-8ft placed 67th. His video shows tremendous potential, just surprised at these numbers for a player that has multiple B1G offers.

He's being recruited to play football, not compete in strength and speed competitions.

Sorry to be snarky, but I hate it when people place too much emphasis on off-field "stats" versus what players can do on the field. For college recruiting and the nfl draft.

That's really surprising, and not good... so bad it actually makes me question what was up (injury, or just not taking it seriously?) A forty time over 5 seconds for one of our top db recruits does not seem right.

I can't believe the kid ran over a 5.0 forty. Just from watching the kid play basketball (I know they aren't fully sprinting) he is a freak athlete and all over the court. This video just shows a little bit of the athleticism this kid has.

I wouldn't worry too much (or at all) about a meaningless combine.

I agree with your statement that he definitely looks the part on the field. My buddy (Michigan State fan) was giving me a hard time on how we could offer the kid with these results, I pulled up his highlight video, which is very impressive to say the least. He ripped on the competition that Minneapolis North played against. I don't agree, Jeff Jones came from the same conference! The kid has offers from Iowa and Wisconsin as well, I'll leave the scouting to the coaches, not some bonehead MI State fan!

I wouldn't worry about that at all, there has to have been something goofy going on with their timing.

Last year they had 16 kids run under 4.79, this year they had one.

A kid that ran a 4.533 there last year, ran a 4.795 this year.

I find it hard to believe that everyone got slower.

Maybe their timing is more accurate this year?

Here's something interesting - Hand Time vs Electronic Time

The Study - Electronic Versus Hand Times
A study at Truman State University was performed to determine an appropriate conversion factor. Multiple repetitions of 40 yard runs were conducted, with hand and electronic times for the same subjects recorded and compared.

Hand timing is typically initiated upon the first hand movement out of a three-point stance, and ends when the player's torso (shoulders or chest) crosses the finish line.

Electronic timing starts when the player lifts his hand from a sensor pad and ends when he crosses an infrared beam at the finish line. The beam is set at a height of about 4 feet.

Results
The study determined that the difference between hand and electronic times was .12 to .19 seconds, with the hand times being faster. A correction factor of .16 seconds was suggested - this is similar to the widely accepted human reaction time for visual stimulus of .19 seconds.

So, if your player runs a 40-yard dash in a hand-timed 4.40 seconds, his electronic equivalent would be 4.56 seconds.

Oh boy....

Can we just lump this into a stars conversation too?

Doesn't matter at all. All sorts of factors can change performance and who knows how accurate the numbers even are. If coaches really start relying on 40 times at random camps to evaluate players they'll be out of a job soon

The issue isn't just with his 40 time, it's the whole performance he had at this combine. I would expect a D1 recruit with multiple B1G offers to preform better then a majority of MN HS players in grades 9-11. The biggest thing here is that he said in an interview at this combine, that he was there to prove he earned these offers. A word to the wise would be to punch that Golden Ticket sooner then later Mr. Johnson.

Meh. What's he going to say? 'Yea I'm really just here cause I didn't have anything else to do'. Kid could be sick, uninterested, or just slacking. A few minutes of film from either sport show he's a D1 athlete so I see no point in caring about his numbers at a combine against local comp

Maybe he had a tight hamstring? Maybe he was sick? You're dead on. Anyone taking too much of a "why did we offer this kid" based off this type of combine must think they know more about player evaluation than our coaching staff and that of some other conference teams. I'll side with the coaches.

I don't think anyone should be doubting someone who this staff offers at DB.

And this isn't even someone that is easy to doubt. Pretty sure he would be our second highest rated DB that we have gotten under Kill next to Dior Johnson. Tyler has a grade of 5.7 on Rivals, 86 on 247 and is a top 50 safety on Scout with offers from Wisconsin and Iowa and a b-ball offer too. Minneapolis city conference player of the year with great size for a safety (6-2 /6-3) and has athleticism that got him on Sportscenter's top 10. He is a guy where it should be very easy to get relatively excited about if he were to commit.

Agree 100%. Sawvel has a keen eye for talent. Assume he will be very good if he wants him.

The coaching staffs at Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa have all seen him play and extended scholarships. The end.
