Official 2013 Class Recruiting Updates Thread

So where are we now?
Scholarship numbers left? 3 or 4?
Assuming a Woltarisky and Thompson commitment at this all star game, we'd be left with guys like Riley, Webb, West, Wozniak, Spearman, another LB?, another WR?

I bet we get Woltarisky, Thompson, and Wozniak, add West or Webb if we can. I also think they'll find a spot for Spearman or Riley if either commit no matter what, maybe even take both if they could.

Ferguson (OT) and Watkins (S) are no longer on the team from earlier. Heifort (T) and Shultz (OLB) are still walk-ons I believe. So that's 4 spots still open.
I could see a few more open up from either the RB's, TE's and/or WR's who don't get much playing time.

Good call on Ferguson, I hadn't heard that. I had heard Watkins was leaving, but he's still on the roster on Gophersports. I'm pretty sure Heifort got a late scholarship, but you're probably right on Shultz, I don't know where that came from.

Vontarius West committed to Florida International. Gophers never offered him, Rivals made it sound like he was possibly a Plan B. So that could mean we are full at CB and Andrews plans on sticking with us.

Is he still visiting here this weekend as scheduled?

Strange, I really was hoping we'd land West. Surprising he would pick FIU over some better offers.

West wouldn't have gotten in to school here at best or will be an NCAA academic casualty at worst. Book it. A guy with his offer list doesn't go to FIU.

Rivals says his gpa is 3.7 for what that's worth. I don't think we are recruiting enough CBs in this class.

The roster hasn't been updated to reflect spring semester changes yet. That why Watkins is still on it but he graduated fall semester. The hardest part in analyzing the scholarship roster is knowing which walk ons have been awarded scholarships and which have not.. The only two that I know for sure is Cameron Botticelli and Aaron Hill. I believe that neither Zach Mottla, Ernie Heifort nor Dominic Schultz have been awarded scholarships yet.

I believe it has little to do with GPA and more to do with tests (ACT) and courses taken. I've talked to parents of recruits that say that if you don't have your academics together by the end of your JR. at the latest, you could have struggles getting qualified.

I don't like to assume it's a grades thing every time this happens though.

Ohhhhhhhhh - Osseo coach Lamker is not happy with the Gophers with those comments regarding Mr. Tussler.

If he wanted the Gophers to offer Tusler so badly, perhaps he should've worked harder to send Will Johnson our way. It's a two-way street. I'm sure he feels screwed over, but doesn't he think the Gophers felt screwed over last year with Johnson?

I really wouldn't make too much of the comment. Probably just trying to compliment the kid.

And Tusler is such a great player that Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Notre Dame - schools that recruit MN all the time - offered him scholarships. Oh wait, no they didn't.

Or how about Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, Toledo, Ohio... Nope.

Tusler sounds like a good kid, and I hope he has a lot of success at Northern Iowa, but I get really tired of coaches/fans thinking that because a kid is a good player in MN H.S. football, that the Gophers are obligated to give him a scholarship. I want MN kids as much as the next guy, but there are cases where, for whatever reason, despite their success, he's not believed to be a D1A football player. The Gophers are not responsible for making him a D1 player by giving him a scholarship.

Maybe I am biased but Coach Lamker is a stand up guy. I'm pretty positive he put in good words for us with Johnson.

I thought Bridge Tusler should have gotten an offer. None of his attributes blow you away but when you watched the games he was always the best player on the field. He's a football player and would have contributed. He would have also been a great ambassador for Gophers Football.

Yeah, that's not even remotely out of line considering he's the kid's head coach. I would expect him to say that.

Dexter Foreman is on scholarship? Who messed that one up?

Coach Kill wanted QB depth. Something appeared to be up with him last year because he was off the 105 roster and didn't travel very often. That said, he's a FR.

What about him wanting to stay in his home state? According to rivals, he took 2 visits--both within the state of Florida.

Generally, I agree with your point. My issue isn't with the coach and/or fans for thinking the U should offer it's with their refusal to spread some of that blame. You see the same thing with the NDSU teams, everyone is annoyed with Kill for not offering these guys when Ferentz, all the MAC schools, etc, made the same mistake.

It's educated guessing and occasionally you're wrong.

I also don't blame the coach. Of course you go to bat for your kid, especially a guy like Tusler that gave so much to that program. I think it's impossible to see a kid work that hard and be that good and not think he's good enough to play for the U and not be a little bitter.

My take on Tusler....I wish he would get a scholarship. I'd really like him in this class (with it opening up), especially since Edwards is already in the class. I don't think I'd be super comfortable with him being our only RB recruit in this class, but he's a heck of a football player. I can't imagine that he won't be a productive football (at either RB, Slot, CB) . I've been wrong on players like that before and I've been right before. However, despite my opinion, I can't blame Kill for not offering. No one else has offered, so my opinion is the VAST minority.

I think it's possible, but it's just really rare for a player to choose FIU over a Big 10 school. It is a red flag that there might be more going on. It's obviously not conclusive proof.

I get the "staying close to home" angle, but if that was his main priority, he had two far better scholarship options that were also much closer to home - USF (~40 miles) and UCF (~60 miles). Instead, he'd rather go ~225 miles from home to a lesser school in a lesser conference with a brand new head coach who will almost certainly be worse than his wrongly-fired predecessor? I'd love to play in Miami too, but it's not like Orlando and Tampa are terrible cities. Watch and see when he's likely playing for a JuCo somewhere this fall.

+1. Well said Bob.

I don't think anyone would disagree with you that there is a good chance that academics are an issue, I think some people just have a problem with you stating it so matter-of-factly. The truth is that none of us can know for sure, I'm sure there are some other reasons to choose FIU, even if most people wouldn't choose that option.
