Norwood Teague Next on ESPN 1500

Dave McClain, Don Morton, John Powless, Bill Cofield, Steve Yoder and maybe even Stu Jackson could also disagree that Badger fans have ALWAYS supported the team and filled the joint win or lose.

All that said, wish the snarkiness would go away, along with all the Hawkeye and Badger fans that live around here too. The big irony in all this is Sid Hartman, a guy who nearly always looks on the positive side, is constantly ripped around here for being old and not positive enough! You wonder what people really want anyway.

Undefeated and unscored on would get you in the ballpark.

from all accounts, Sid went on a curse-filled tirade on all the other media members after the Indiana win. Would have been fun to watch.

Look people. Everyone seems to think we have the right to all of the privy actions that go on with a Big Search like this. That is total bunk. We have the right to know only the things leading up to the person who was offered and accepted the job.

Teague handled this professionally in a very big situation. I, personally, do not care about anything except the current situation we are in. Everything else is just fodder for gossip. However, we also know that gossip can lead to the most fun, humorous, exchanging of laughter on GopherHole like we had on this thread during the search:

http://www.forums.gopherhole.com/boards/showthread.php?45625-News-on-Shaka-Smart

If you haven't read it, or were missing for awhile, it is the best entertainment with a twelve pack of beer you will ever have.

Oh, one other thing that came out of the interview that people are overlooking. Teague didn't want to go into specifics on Flip, but said that having Ryan Saunders on a basketball staff was NOT a problem for him. Said his Head Coach would be able to name his staff, with the caveat that, Teague would have input if there was a problem.

Boy, that knowledge could have stopped a LOT of posts around here. ;)

I thought those threads were insane from the get go. How could any AD at this level even attempt to get away with choosing the assistant coaches, it just wouldn't happen....It was amazing to watch people jump to that conclusion though that the only reason Flip said no is because NT wasn't going to let him hire Ryan OR pick his own assistants. Just laughable.

What would you have asked? What kind of style would we play? Already answered. Can't ask about recruits, so what do you ask? Assistants? Might be interesting but ppl are upset about asking about their background. Seriously what do ask?

I don't have a problem with them asking a few questions about the hiring process, but they should be smart enough to know he's probably not going to go into a ton of detail. When that happens, move on.

Time to move on........

think he was higher?

Everyone wants to be an insider...and you have not so subtly hinted that you are. While I have no doubt that some higher up called you and said "geez, this is the 9th guy, I hope we get him.....," all that matters is how it turns out.

Bo Ryan was well down the Badger list and he's done pretty well.

There is much to be done, and this guy (please stop calling him vulgar nicknames) is confident, energetic, and thinks a good staff and recruiting are the key, and that rings true with me.

Hats off to Rich Pitino....the next few months and years should be exciting.

I didn't see a tirade. I was sitting next to Sid at the time and he just mumbled words at Tubby. He had a quick huffing & puffing session, but it probably lasted 4 seconds.

I do find it odd when it comes to the selective outrage that much of the media has. They'll beat someone up over something stupid and unimportant, but then let a huge issue slide. The lack of consistency is weak.

It was actually 9 before Richard. And yes, that is inside info.

I don't believe for a second that you have any idea what you're talking about. If there were 9 offered before him, list their names - in the order they were offered.

lefty...How dare you say something on GH that makes sense, discouraging others from being foolish and/or saying foolish things, and taking away from the rest of us the entertainment that we so richly deserve.

he as in Norwood? you are guessing this cuz you think he is leaving the u soon?

They asked what they needed to. Now if they keep talking about the same things next week then I might agree

Calling bs on your line of cowflop yet again. "Might" agree? Don't crawl out on any limbs. Sounds more to me like setting yourself up to continue the whining. Getting old.

Norwood is on WCCO now talking with Chad about the hire. Guess he's making the rounds!

I don't mind some initial questions, but Judd is completely clueless to how all of this works. He isn't going to go into great depth about the hiring process and the media isn't entitled to know exactly how all of these negotiations went. As far as the Flip thing, no matter how you come out on him as a coach, they have both handled it perfect. Flip said it didn't work out and he'll be a fan of the U and Norwood isn't going into any details, what do you want? Do you want him to rip into Flip?

Judd is lost. He seems to think that our coaching search went horrible but that's because he has no perspective. Look at who Illinois ended up with last season. Look at who UCLA (one of the best programs in the country) ended up with.

The Kimani stuff, I didn't think it was bad, it had to be addressed and it was.

Generally, the interview was a waste and I'm done with anything Judd related (too bad, I don't mind Dubay).

Here's why I have to call B.S. on this - you're talking about uw-madison ONLY. Media in Wisconsin AND MANY in print & radio in Milwaukee are unquestionably anti-Marquette.

Those that are sour on Minnesota in the Twin Cities - it nothing to do with genetics, weather, bad apples, etc. in Minnesota. You'll find these types in many cities around the nation. In Wisconsin it's just that you have Becky fanboys who have someone else to whine about constantly.

Tom Oates is a PRIME example. uw-madison is NOT universally loved by your average WI resident.

We are talking about the coverage of UW athletics in Madison. Of course Madison media will not cover Marquette as positively as Wisconsin, they are rivals.

The only detail Teague addressed there was that it had nothing to do with Flip's Assistants and in particular, having Ryan on the staff. After the numerous threads around here and discussions elsewhere about nepotism, castigating Teague for demanding to oversee the hiring of Assistants, castigating Flip for turning down the job BECAUSE of Assistants etc. Not asking the question would have been a very stupid thing to do.

Can't see why settling that should bother to many people nor Teague's admission that he had offered others the job before Pitino. Not many but some. Hard to think that anyone is out there screaming "He's LYING" about either of those answers.

That said, not a fan of Judd and yeah, like Dubay too.

Apparently Mike Balado is NOT an assistant coach. This is something the 1500 guys could have broke if they had used my line of questioning instead of their pointless questions about who was contacted during the search. Young is the only assistant hired at the moment. I think getting Balado as Director of Basketball Operations is a good get since he probably has enough experience and connections to warrant being an assistant coach.

Former FIU assistant Mike Balado, who was hired yesterday, will be the director of basketball for the #Gophers.

Shaka Smart wasn't offered the job, AD says

Gophers athletics director Norwood Teague said he did not offer Shaka Smart the basketball job, but that he talked often to his former Virginia Commonwealth coach about the University of Minnesota position and the program.

"I talk to him about the job here all of the time -- about what we have and what we're doing -- because we're friends," Teague, the former VCU AD, said in a phone interview Thursday morning, April 11. "We talk about everything. We talk about things outside of basketball every week. So the Shaka thing is (no big deal). We're very close. We talk all of the time."

Nice find. There was some RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE over Balado being named an assistant coach.

Dubay is really good

DDDDubbbaayyyy is the the the the wwwwooorrrst of of of of all all alal TTTTTIME. He's a petulant 3rd grader with multiple speech impediments. Not to mention talk over people, interrupt, scream and yell.

I do understand some of the questions, but the tone of Judd in the interview (and throughout the entire search) was that we need questions answered because something peculiar was happening. Coaching searches are filled with rumors and nonsense and every coach you have any interest in is a "candidate". The twitter age has forced media members to buy into the hysteria that surrounds coaching searches and Judd doesn't seem to have the perspective to realize that you're hearing nothing but half truths and all out fabrications when it comes down to a coaching search. The coaching search went per usual. Teague fired Tubby right away (didn't hesitate) and hried someone within 10 days after bigger names were floated around. That's every coaching search in college hoops.

You're right on Flip, but people aren't going to believe him. Do you really think the pro-Flip crowd is going to think anything but Teague micromanaged Flip?

It comes down to this, this interview wouldn't have been a waste (for me) if it had been about 25% coaching search and 75% going forward. But it wasn't.
