Norwood Teague Next on ESPN 1500

Such a useless interview.

For Gopher Faithful you're right, for the general public it was quite useful. The "faithful" don't want any questions about the search or any possible "negative" questions. They know about the search, or think they do and only want to look at the future. The general public didn't know Pitino beyond his last name, thought the "deal was done" before Tubby's firing and were either irritated or confused and irritated about what may or may not have happened with Flip. A name they all knew, whether they thought he was right for the job or not.

Teague answered all the questions. Said that there were people who were offered the job before Pitino. Wouldn't name them because it would be fair to them, but there certainly were more people named out there that he NEVER talked to. He said he thought about Pitino all along and they all seemed to agree that Pitino could be a very good hire.

Teague handled himself very well.

I care about the search. I care about how the recruits were handled. I think they should answer questions about Cheech's past. There will be plenty of time to talk about how great Dick Pit is (and I think he is great). NT went into hiding and this is the first chance anyone has had to question him. He doesn't have to answer and probably won't answer most, but the questions deserve to be asked. Should we be asking these questions a month from now? No.

Sunshine up your a$$ isn't journalism. Relax. NT is a Big Boy. He can handle it. It comes with the territory.

If you want to be all positive all the time, don't get so upset about someone else not being as positive. If you want to believe in Pitino, take joy from the fact that Norwood said he was always on the list. We don't need anything swept under the rug, just answer the questions.

It's laughable that you can somehow analogize this to politics. The coaching search is over - we hired a coach - so it's no longer news. Really, do you think people care about the search process anymore? Let's move on and ask about the future. That is what most people care about. I agree we should question our leaders, but let's question them on things that matter at this point.

Judd Zulgad seems to think he's entitled to a transparent search. Well, he isn't. Plain and simple. Coaching searches can't be transparent. The very nature of coaching searches REQUIRE that they are NOT transparent. You cannot release info on potential candidates and negotiate deals in public. My god, for a guy like Judd who's been around sports and covered the big leagues, he pouts more than anyone I've ever heard on radio. Everything is a conspiracy to him.

Yes, Judd, the Gopher athletic director purposefully kept things tight-lipped on the search only to piss you off and keep you in the dark. It wasn't to maintain the search's intregrity, to make sure a coach's cover wasn't blown or his candidacy kept secret. It was just to make Judd mad. There is NO athletic director anywhere who reveals exactly how a coaching search goes. NONE. Does Judd really not get it?

What would you have asked? What kind of style would we play? Already answered. Can't ask about recruits, so what do you ask? Assistants? Might be interesting but ppl are upset about asking about their background. Seriously what do ask?

How is the assistant coaching search going? There are still 2 openings.

There have been rumblings about architectural designs for the practice facility being completed by this summer, is that true?

Young seems to have major ties to the AAU circuit in NYC, is that something you wanted to see from the new coaching staff? How worried are you about the questionable practices that are associated with AAU coaches etc.?

Mike Balado seems to have strong ties to south florida and also is fluent in Spanish. Do you see Florida becoming a major recruiting stronghold under this administration? Are there any plans to recruit overseas (ie Spain since Balado is fluent in Spanish)?

What can you tell us about what we might expect from the final two assistant coaching openings? Is it true that Pitino probably won't look for someone with local ties?

Do you expect Pitino to fill all 4 open scholarships with so little time left? Or do you forsee him banking 1 or more for next year?

I could go on and on with stuff to talk about...

So those questions can't be put into future interviews? There are only so many questions and nothing they said was out of line.

The hire has been made what the f-ck does it matter who was involved in the search? Not to mention every question they asked was negative. Would it have been too much to ask a neutral question about the assistant coaches, practice facility, etc.?

Isn't THAT the truth.. :)

He keeps saying Pitino was always on his list....always.

And how do you know he wasn't?

He has never said he was number 1 on his list. Do you think they were all sitting around like, "Dang, this search is going terribly. Our ENTIRE list of 50 people is all dried up. Wait wait wait. What about, we just find a really good coach and hire his son? Donovon? No. Smith? Probably not. Does coach K have a son? Holy cow I got it! RICHARD PITINO!!!!"

I'm sure none of you guys have ever listened to Madison's local sports radio, but it is incredible how different they are from Minnesota's. In Madison the shows are very positive, even when things are not going well. In Minnesota it seems like the strategy is to tear down the University at every possible moment. Sure you can say Wisconsin has had better teams more recently, but it goes beyond that. Sports media is no different than your typical news media, it wields a lot of power in shaping the public's opinion on issues and if it is always negative, the fan base will likely take that point of view. The opposite is also true. I think this is a major reason for Minnesota's pessimistic fan base, at least when it comes to the casual fan.

I've got to believe there's a happy medium in here somewhere. I don't need to have sunshine blown up my butt all the time, but a constructive dialogue would be nice. I didn't listen to the interview, so I can't say how constructive it was. I'm not against asking uncomfortable questions that the public is interested in the answers to, but if that got in the way of asking about the facilities progress, etc., then it was a missed opportunity.

boring boring boring

What was so entertaining about today's interview? We got questions and answers that we have already heard a million times. Complete waste of time.

And you attempted to answer my questions even though you have absolutely not idea of what the answers would be. Nice.

The reason Judd and Jeff sole purpose of conducting this sort of interview with these sorts of questions was to create another Thread on GopherHole that becomes another PC.

As a UM alum living in Madison, I am total agreement with this comment, which also extends to the print media (read Tom Oates). I believe this difference strikes, fundamentally, at why UW is so much stronger than UM in b-ball and football over generations. Minnesotans (at least the TC media) are LOOKING for reasons to complain about or disparage UM athletic programs, which establishes a negative perception and undermines recruiting. Of course, this is the kiss of death given the importance of recruiting.

I am not sure why this is the case. Pessimist genetics? Too much sour weather? Bad apples in the media? All of the above?

I will go one further: UW is universally loved and supported by your average WI resident. Sadly, UM; not so much. Don't be afraid to support your flagship university unconditionally, you silly Minnesotans! You'd be surprised at the dividends.

Thank you.

I think it probably has to do with the editors at the news papers and producers of the local radio shows.

Some of you are too young to remember the Madison media back in the 80's...just saying, winning changes a medias perspective. The TC media hasn't had a lot of positive things happen on the football field or basketball court for years. Hockey? Every interview I have heard about hockey is NOTHING but praise for the coaches and players. Winning solves a lot of problems in athletics.

What I can't understand is that with all of the negative media and negativism/skepticism amongst the fan base is how so many times Minnesota Nice terminology gets included.

They had to ask some of the questions they did early but should have moved on quicker once it became clear that NT wasn't going to give them what they were looking for in terms of answers. They spent far too long digging for details on the various candidates.

I like the idea of an AD that holds some things back, I felt like Joel was way too open at times whereas it seems NT likes to conduct a lot of business behind closed doors and away from media scrutiny which I have no problem with. Won't make him popular but he seems like he is not overly worried about winning popularity contests with the media.

I don't get this. Since when is focusing on your job in an aggressive market and trying to reach a deal in a timely fashion, "going into hiding?" I'm glad he was focused on DOING HIS JOB.

I would have done the same thing. That is, if I was Teague, I would have gone into hiding and not spoken to the media at all during the search. We agree.

Yep, these boards full of Gopher "Fans" that have spent years ripping the locals, why should the media be any different? My only problem is when they get "snarky" about it. Here, in a town chock-full of people who aren't from here, a lot of them big supporters of our arch-rivals, negativity towards the locals also sells.

Oh, don't know about Madison, but have listened to Milwaukee stations for years. They have no problem ripping the "locals", unless the Brewers, Bucks and sometimes even Marquette, don't count.

I bet he's renting.

At the end of the day it never does any good to perpetually rip your alma mater or favorite college team. It hurts the school's perception outside the state and to recruits. Recruits like to play for schools with great fan bases and great fan bases have positive and passionate fans, even through the lean years. It's a major reason why Madison is considered by some (most notably Scott Van Pelt) to be the best college town in the country. The fans always support their team, no matter win/loss (or how boring their basketball team is :D ).

I live in a husker/hawkeye market and listening to the radio down here you hear nothing but positivity and optimism about the programs. Whenever Im in the Twin Cities and hear their snarky, sarcastic asshats on kfan or 1500 it really pisses me off.

Oh, one other thing that came out of the interview that people are overlooking. Teague didn't want to go into specifics on Flip, but said that having Ryan Saunders on a basketball staff was NOT a problem for him. Said his Head Coach would be able to name his staff, with the caveat that, Teague would have input if there was a problem.

Boy, that knowledge could have stopped a LOT of posts around here. ;)

If Teague, or at least the SID office didn't know this was going to be a focus, someone needs to get fired. Zulgad has been on this "process" thing since the search began. Here's a tweet from him yesterday afternoon promoting the Teague interview:

Judd Zulgad ‏@1500ESPNJudd 20h
Gophers AD Norwood Teague is going to join us at 9:40 a.m. Thursday to discuss the Pitino hire and the search process on @1500ESPN.

I didn't hear the interview. But based on everything I've read in this thread, there was nothing wrong with it.

Here's why I have to call B.S. on this - you're talking about uw-madison ONLY. Media in Wisconsin AND MANY in print & radio in Milwaukee are unquestionably anti-Marquette.

Those that are sour on Minnesota in the Twin Cities - it nothing to do with genetics, weather, bad apples, etc. in Minnesota. You'll find these types in many cities around the nation. In Wisconsin it's just that you have Becky fanboys who have someone else to whine about constantly.

Tom Oates is a PRIME example. uw-madison is NOT universally loved by your average WI resident.
