Nnamdi Adim-Madumere - curious why we haven't seen more of him

Following the news of Cheney's transfer, I was curious about some other interesting prospects that Fleck had pulled in the last few years.

Wide Receiver Nnamdi Adim-Madumere is an interesting case:

  • 6'4 235 lbs from Fort Worth, TX
  • He was a high 3* and received serious interest late in the recruiting process. People were surprised that we were able to keep him
  • Notable names on offer list:
    • Alabama
    • Texas A&M
    • Missouri
    • Baylor
    • Utah
  • Apparently A&M and Bama went after him fairly hard late in the process

Has anyone heard anything why we haven't seen much of him? Wright, a TAMU transfer (who I think will be a stud for us next year) is seeing more time than him.

Perhaps there's nothing more to it, and he hasn't impressed Fleck enough to see the field
 

Not sure, but after watch the press conference post Indiana. Its clear to me Flecks number 1 priority is his relationship with players who follow his culture 24/7.

winning is not his number 1 priority.

I still like PJ, but this scares me.

now i now moving forward in any game/s where a player who 100% has done everything PJ has asked of them, that player will not be pulled regardless of how well they might not be playing or if the backup performs better in games.

PJ will not play the best players to win games. Culture will always triumph winning for him

Oh come on....he won't put aside culture for the sake of winning games (ie playing a guy who isn't doing the right things off the field) but he wants to win games and isn't going to intentionally do something that will cause the team to lose.
 

Is he even a WR anymore? He's still listed as a WR on the roster, but 6-4 235 indicates that he might have been moved to TE (I thought I read that on this site at some point).

For the sake of argument, what if said culture is responsible for more wins? Not saying talent in general won’t win out vs less talented players.

Jackson has made some plays in the passing game but seems like he has dealt with injuries as well this year.

Yeah, I thought I heard that too...they were trying to grow him into like an athletic H-back. No inside info though. We've heard VERY little about him since he joined the team. Just must not be ready to help the team.
 



Wow, Brown Stephens looks big and doesn’t look super fast but if Bell says he is fast then he must be.

I'm still very high on Jackson's future. Injuries and drops have plagued him this season.

I think he has the most ability after the catch since Bateman. You could see flashes again of that last week.

I might put Wright a little higher than Jackson in terms of after the catch ability but agree that Jackson has shown flashes of being a very good WR for us.

Any coach worth anything puts their culture first and foremost. If a coach starts selling out and letting slackers play, they've lost the program. That said, no idea what Nnamdi's situation is.
He always struck me as perhaps being too big and slow to be a WR. I thought they'd probably turn him into a TE when he signed.

Yeah I mean it actually be a good sign. If he was playing guys doing everything wrong to try to get a short term win…I would assume it means he is trying to take short cuts to get enough wins to leave town.

This is big time Division one football, Fleck knows winning is number one, but I also think he believes he can't win unless everyone adheres to the culture, but that's literally every program in America
 

During the press conference from Monday I think, Fleck at one point refers to a player as Mini Gronk. It might have been in relation to Jamison Geers but kind of felt like maybe that was someone else. Maybe Nnamdi? Never heard that nickname mentioned before for a player on the team but could easily have missed it.

I do think Fleck emphasizes the big picture above and beyond just football more than a lot of coaches at the power 5 level do. But yeah, in the end he knows he has to win in order to stay employed.

I do get the sense though that do to his relationship with Coyle he isn't being pressured to win at all costs and to compromise what he believes in, in order to try and get an extra W or two.

Slackers? Where did you read the word, "slackers"? I'd agree, no way Fleck puts slackers out there.

Flecks Pets is probably a more fitting description. These are guys, like Tanner, who live/breath Fleck's culture. They get preferential treatment.

It's not necessarily a bad thing but it could become one.

Mini Gronk is Nick Kallerup. Fleck just talked about him on his weekly radio show.

Makes sense...same number....although looking at their sizes I am not sure mini is the right way to refer to Nick. Maybe it was young Gronk.... :)

All joking aside though, if he actually plays like Gronk I can't wait to see him on the field.

Mike Sanford asks "What's an H-back? Would that require putting a wrinkle in the offense?"
 

Well, it was nice to see BSF get some targets last week.

But otherwise, if you want to catch the ball, I question why anyone would want to be a TE in this offense, because you will spend 95% of your snaps blocking.

Sure, for a guy like Kieft, that's fine. that might be his route to the pros. But if you fancy yourself as a pass-catching TE in the mold of a Kyle Rudolph or Irv Smith, why would you want to play for the Gophers?

I remember reading Lombardi saying that he knew that a guy named Bill Qunilan dogged it during practice drills but let it slide because he knew that on Sunday afternoon Quinlan would be busting ass trying to make a play. Maybe it is different at the pro level, where "winning is the only thing," but if a guy is not causing trouble, I don't think that every guy who plays has to be in lockstep with a coach's culture. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Quinlan

If a player is missing class, late to class, bad grades, late to practice , not giving full effort.... You are ok with that? Jerry Kill wasn't ok with that...

You never know how a player will develop. Unless a player is a legitimate can't-miss blue-chip talent or close to it, they have to earn the privilege to become a starter. Some players take longer to mature and develop. Boye Mafe and David Cobb did. It is in year three that they made huge strides. They worked hard and have that desire to succeed.

I guess the best way to do it is play guys that are huge on talent and bad with rules. I’m guessing the other guys on the team would think that’s great.

Now that scares me.

He’s talking about the culture. Every player needs to buy in to the system. If a player isn’t pulling his weight in any aspect of the team (practice, meetings, film study) they aren’t going to play. We all knew that one guy in high school or college that may have been a great athlete but “slacked” in some aspect. It builds animosity amongst the players/coaches. If there is an expectation that you have to do something, you better do it, especially in Fleck’s system.

culture is winning, the team with the best talent doesn't always win, look at Florida State today great talent horrible culture. Its absurd to think coaches don't play who they think the best guys will be on Saturday, their jobs and reputation is on the line so winning is their first priority
