Niko Medved Post Santa Clara Loss

Out of curiosity, which of those plentiful schools suffered through the beat down UMN suffered and then their new coach, this year, has radically turned the school around in the 1st year?

I am not saying that Minnesota cannot dig itself out. I am saying that expecting it to happen in the 1st year of a new coaches tenure is pretty unrealistic.
You have a tendency to make arguments against points that no one is making. Again, I am not blaming Niko. I agree we need to give him time to get out of the hole that the program is in.

My argument is simply this. . .the lack of a massive NIL program is not an excuse for incompetence.

The fact that we are in month 1 of Niko's tenure is 100% an excuse for incompetence. The dumpster fire of a program that he inherited is also a legit excuse for our current incompetence.

However, the idea that we cannot expect results, ever, because of our lack of a NIL program is a cop out.

Is Niko incompetent?
My problem with whiners (read USAF) is they think everything is incompetence. We were significantly under manned against Santa Clara. We lost the game, but won the 2nd half. Is Niko incompetent?

The Gopher football and hoops programs are hamstrung when it comes to trying to get to the level of the quality programs. It hasn't happened and likely won't considering the current climate.

So we accept mediocrity or less and then, at best, hope for a decent season when the stars line up in our favor.

Even if we were at full strength, Niko would have been hard pressed to field a competitive squad this season But he owns it.

Can he build a culture that will retain the majority of the returning players? That will be his challenge and a very important factor in building his program.

The bold is precisely the problem.

Comparing the football and basketball programs is insane. The Gopher football team has finished over .500 5 times in in the Big 10 since he has been the coach. The basketball team has had a winning conference record 3 times in the last 27 years. They aren't the same.

We should expect to be able to get to the level of the football team on the basketball side.

As far as accepting mediocrity, I don't know what that means. I'll just say this, I've had a ton more fun in the mediocre Fleck tenure than I have in the vast majority of the basketball seasons. Mediocrity gets boring, no doubt. It's lightyears more interesting and fun than being awful.

I agree, but to win in the B1G you have to do much more than get a kid to the NBA. Both Pitino and Johnson can say they put players in the NBA, but they didn't win in the B1G.
I think, and hope, that Niko can get more money to buy better athletes.
I think Medved would have won more with the players Pitino had. Pitino brought in the talent but I think was lacking more on the development/system side.

I have no idea. I didn't accuse of him being incompetent. I'd assume not, I was happy with the hire (still am).

That said, our basketball team, right now, is incompetent but I have never said that falls on Niko. In fact, i've gone out of my way to say the opposite.

I'm not hiding the ball on what I'm saying. I'm simply saying that we should have expectations of a competent basketball program regardless of a massive NIL infusion.

At some point, if we are still incompetent as a basketball team, that will be Niko's fault regardless of our NIL program. If, hopefully, he builds the program, he proves my point.

Incompetent may be correct.

Meaning: "not having or showing the necessary skills to do something successfully."

This is true with enough of Niko's roster to make winning in the B1G very difficult for this team.

The question is how do we get the players necessary to win basketball games in the B1G? I think Niko can coach, but I have said that being well coached, but athletically inferior will still result in losing basketball games in the B1G. Niko has to get more highly skilled basketball players who are much better athletes. How does Niko get those players? One answer is...he has to buy them. He needs significant money. Without it, Minnesota will be, as you said, incompetent.

Yep, the last sentence is where we differ.

There are tons of teams, way better than us, who are similarly situated (or worse) to MN in terms of NIL.

Bob, you beat me to the reply.

Unfortunately, you are temporarily forgot the first rule on this board. NIL is he only way to get players to get better, and we will never have enough as others, so there is no hope (sigh).

Many forget all the challenges faced in the past with cheating programs, but somehow Clem found some pretty good players and convinced them to come.

Agreed.

It's very odd to hear that argument after we just got whooped by Santa Clara.

There it is..."woe is us."
