New Commit: Berkley Edwards

Some more accurate times on how fast Edwards is...

60m indoor -- 6.88. To put this in perspective, he would not have made the final at the Big Ten indoor track meet (it took 6.80), but this was also as a JR in high school. If I remember right, DCT ran 6.98 in HS. Denard Robinson ran a 6.81 at a dual meet for michigan in 2010. Bottom line...he is really fast.

100m -- 10.76. I saw a video of a national meet that he ran at. The thing I noticed was that he seemed to be football fast, not track fast. What I mean by that is that he is very explosive and quick, but his top end speed is not where he excels. DCT is the opposite type of fast; great top end speed, but it takes him a bit to get there.

Forty, schmorty. I love the 60m indoor time for evaluating football speed. 100% accurate, short explosive race, no weather conditions.

Plus, these times are as a JR in high school. He's only getting faster! I'm really excited about Edwards coming to play for the Gophers. He could be a legitmate weapon and a threat to score everytime he touches the ball.

Thanks! Interesting information and perspective. The best thing about it is that it wasn't about hand times vs. electronic times.:)

I knew he ran track. Those are some pretty good numbers. Well, that was the first and last time I'll ever talk about a kid's times.

I don't understand, prof. Talking about kids' times on GopherHole is a good way to pass the time.

The immediate assumption that he is a top player is off the mark. People need to take off the Gopher glasses and look at this objectively. He had two other BCS offers, and not for lack of trying (camped at a lot of different places). His brother plays in the NFL, and his father was an All-American. He hasn't gone under the radar. As a prospect, he's about what his offers and numbers say he is, which is an average BCS prospect with the same risk/reward that comes with every high school player.

I like the commit; it's arguably the best we've had so far this year. But the assumption that he's going to come in and take carries away from anyone is way premature.

+1

Well, prof, ALL assumptions of any player anywhere is premature. But assumptions do make us sound like we know what we are talking about, when in reality, it is all just pure unproven hope.

60 time?? how many times do you ever run 60m in a play? personally i'd take an even shorter distance (20 or less) to assess his acceleration which is way more important for a back. all that said, judging from his numbers, this kid can burn up field pretty fast.

Now to recruit a few more line beasts to open a whole or two for this kid. At least 2 more needed now.

Given all the injuries they have had to deal with, it is kinda hard to know what they need on the OL right at the moment to be honest...more players or time to heal and gel. Personally think the latter is more accurate.

My point about liking 60m times as a the best measure for football speed is based on 2 things:

1) 40 times suck, totally inaccurate, even electronic times are done differently by different people. Any time in a race on the track always has the exact same variables, making the times more telling of an athletes true speed.

B) 60m is the shortest race run in track meets (sometimes 55 depending on meet). I agree that a 20m race would best measure explosiveness and quickness, but there is no 20m dash.

I like 60m vs. the alternative of 100m because it is a shorter race won by quicker, more explosive guys, which is what we want for football.

You ask how many times you run 60m in a play...hopefully for Mr. Edwards, a lot!!

Vision and instincts beat time. Every time.

I'm not familiar with track and how time is taken. So how are the times taken differently as to where the errors that you mentioned in 40 times going to be prevented in taking a 60 time? If it is operator error, that can also happen at 60 or 100 or what ever distance you are running.

that is kind of where i was confused as well. i guess at 60 in balances out a little more and you can always compare it to the others who ran at a track meet i suppose where in 40s usually only one guy runs at a time?

Growth and Strong Bones

My guess regarding lack of interest by other BCS schools is that he is closer to 5' 8" than 5' 10" and thus they shy away based upon their prototype model of an RB. Not a problem for Minnesota. Ricky Upchurch was not very tall. Regarding redshirting, if he is still growing, then best to red shirt him. He is considerably shorter than his brother Braylon and father Stan. Have him drink several tons of milk and get lots of sleep during a red shirt year. Nurse that growth spurt. My fear is a lot of the injuries we Gophers suffer are because we are playing too many young men whose bones are still growing and are not nearly as strong as they are going to be.

Think 4 to 5 years down the road...

Who thinks Edwards will redshirt? I hope he redshirts, but doubt he will. Kill is very quick to pull off redshirts.

He has had to this year on some guys. Don't let that be your opinion of pulling redshirts, he still has a bunch he has not pulled.

With the latest players on board, people can't say Kill is recruiting 12th. Now 11th according to Rivals, ahead of Purdue.

It really depends upon what happens with the rest of our depth at RB.

There are a couple scenarios:
(1) If Edwards is better than Maye/Gillum he will NOT RS. Kill will play the best players and if he outperforms Maye, he will get that "smaller quick back" role.
(2) If it's close, it depends upon what happens with Wright and Cobb. Cobb really seemed to fall out of favor, I don't know if there was an injury or what. Wright, he was a decent ST player, but he doesn't seem to have gotten any thought at RB.

My guess....he won't RS.

I think the biggest thing is that these are times that are official. They were taken by an impartial judge and part of a competition. They are more reliable. Most of the other 40 times don't come from a source other than the kid or the kid's HS. Additionally, there is also a lot of room for error with the timing done handheld by a coach.

You know you're a Gopher fan when every time one of those older threads about a recruit gets bumped to the top, the first thought that pops in your mind is, "Did he flip?"

I'd like to thank Michigan for not offering him. Kirkwood, Williams, Edwards, next year Jones. I like the our backs. We need a speed guy to compliment our two big maulers, so Edwards seems to fit the bill. I bet he does not redshirt. Maybe Cobb or Wright can make a leap this off-season too.

One thing Kill can say to recruit is "I play the best." He's not afraid to play freshmen if they're the best players: Nelson, Williams, Pslek, etc.
