New Coach within '30 hours'?

Interesting. I'm betting Randy Edsall.

Looks like I'll be staring at my twitter account for the next 30 hours...

interesting. Good thing I have a Christmas party tonight otherwise I would be refreshing twitter every 10 seconds

Interesting. I'm betting Randy Edsall.

Edsall makes a lot of sense to Maturi I'm sure. He was a finalist for his Alma Matter Notre Dame's job last year and he has been talking to the Irish at the beginning and I'm guessing through this entire process.

If they like him, he likes him

Wouldn't it be a shock if it was...............Lane Kiffin

...my money has been on Edsall for a while now.

We've heard this type of announcement before. Maybe Gus Malzahn. Gus would be a demon on the recruiting trail for two months and get us a top 30 class and attract a lot of talented assistants.

I don't get why Edsall is a "meh"
Someone please explain.
Dude is going to most likely take UCONN (yes UCONN) to a BCS bowl game.....do not forget this is football. And it is UCONN.

A win will give him a share of his second conference title in a BCS conference. (in Just 7 seasons in a BCS conference). Since The 4th year after joining a BCS conference (the year in which the first class of recruits that were able to be recruited by Edsall while at a BCS school were seniors or RS juniors) his teams are 32-18 (15-12) with one conference title and a win away from another.

While I would not say it is the greatest hire of all time, it is far from a "meh" for me. I would be very excited for a Randy Edsall hiring.

I think the idea is they'll announce tomorrow, hold a Monday morning press conference to get two days worth of media out of it--- Then, whoever the new coach is can hit the ground running and get out recruiting ASAP.

why do people think this guy is such a good coach? he's 4 years removed from being a HS coach. that to me is a BIG NO THANKS

A year ago I would have been higher on him. Frankly, until a month ago, they were having a pretty bad season. The fact that they're one win from the BCS is more a testament to how awful the Big East is then anything else.

To me, his drawback are his age and the fact that UConn seems to have plateaued under him. He simply has less upside that Hoke, Calhoun and probably even Sumlin, while lacking the certainty of Fulmer. He feels like the ultimate 'compromise.' Frankly I'd rather have Randy Shannon, as I feel he may learn from his mistakes and has bigger upside.

True four years ago he was coaching in High School, this year he's the OC for THE NUMBER 1 TEAM IN THE COUNTRY.

(1) Win. The Big East is terrible
(2) I dont know if I agree with that. It seems to me that the ENTIRE Big East has topped out.

Oh please oh please oh please.

I'm to the point of just name someone already!

So I take it the timing is set for right after bowl selections are announced?

He has been described as "one of the sport's most innovative offensive minds, not just in the college ranks, but in all of football."

There was a widely reported tension between Houston Nutt's reliance on the ground game (which turned out to be one of the best running games in the nation in 2006) and Malzahn's philosophy of spreading the field with a no-huddle offense. The poor ending of the season only added stress to the already tense coaching relationship. Malzahn was named the National Offensive Coordinator of the Year by Rivals.com.

During the 2007 season Malzahn emerged as one of the premier offensive coordinators in the nation, as Tulsa ranked 1st in the nation in total yards per game, ahead of Texas Tech and Hawaiʻi, and with a more balanced attack than both teams.

In 2008, Tulsa was again the nation's most prolific attack, leading with nearly 7,980 total yards of offense averaging 570 yards per game.[9] The Golden Hurricane were ranked 2nd in the nation in scoring behind Oklahoma, scoring over 47 points per game.

Currently the OC of the #1 Auburn Tigers, who are top 10 in the nation in total offense and scoring.

What else do you want from an offensive coordinator?

If the coach is playing today, is there any possibility it could be former Vikings assistant (and Notre Dame hire - for about a day) George O'Leary?

Minnesota has got to be the only place with a 40 year conference title streak where having a season in which winning your conference could make a candidate's stock go down.

Those stats sound an awful lot like Rich Rod. Meaning an offensive genius that should be an OC not a head coach.

I think that actually may be the guy Maturi has been talking about. Only 64, Tubby is 59.
Great defenses, Good running attack, runs some pistol with a mobile QB, worked in Minnesota before, winning experience at GT and at UCF......aside from the Resume flaw at Notre Dame and age, he is the perfect candidate. But if 64 is the new 54, then he could work another 8-12 years.

Shouldn't it have been all the easier for Edsall to dominate it then?

So what? Four years ago Chip Kelly was an assistant coach at New Hampshire. No he has the #1 team in the country.

It might not be correct to say I was higher on him. More like, when the whole Brew to Kansas thing was blowing up, he was one of the ones I wanted considered, along with David Cutcliff. This time, we've had much more time to look into everyone available, and there are many I like better then Edsal. I also didn't realize how old he is then.

That said, why is it unreasonable if I think his stock has dropped? 5 weeks ago they were 3-4 in a bad conference. I pretty much soured on him them. Their rally is admirable, but they haven't beat anyone even as good as Iowa during the stretch, IMO. So I don't find it inspiring enough to vault him ahead of younger guys with more upside like Hoke and Calhoun.

Put another way, if UConn were playing SDSU or Air Force today on a neutral field, I don't think they would win. Why do I have to like Edsal more because he might get to a BCS game?
