Did you really think this was funny? How about Bob Huggins? I mean, Minnesota has a couple of top-tier alcohol prevention centers in the country that could help keep him dry.
Lighten up Francis.Did you really think this was funny?
Pretty fucking classless.
The reason his Minnesota ties are relevant is not because they need to be "one of us", it's relevant because it can give us a leg up on landing a hot commodity who may otherwise not consider us vs his other suitors.I believe that if Medved grew up in Arizona or any of the 49 states other than Minnesota he would never be on anyone’s radar, including Coyle’s. The “one of us” angle is strong and it is real.
Bo Ryan won about a zillion D3 national championships in Wisconsin. I think everyone was pretty aware he could coach.I was hoping for a splashy hire as well, but look at Medved's record. The guy is a winner who knows how to coach. We are always comparing ourselves to Wisconsin. Was there anything exciting about Bo Ryan or Greg Gard when they got hired? No, but look where they are today.
If we hire Medved, I'm hoping he is the guy to finally get us on the Wisconsin level. And that would be a home run.
I also think some of us are downplaying BECAUSE he has Minnesota ties. We are so damaged by BJ that we want to go opposite of that. But if Medved had no MN ties, I think he's probably a pretty good looking candidate.
Or I am just trying to convince myself he'll be good because that's all I can do about it...
jeepersWade and NC State is perfect fit. Their best eras have been when they were cheating. And their crazy fans ran their best coach since Valvano out for not cheating.
I don't know how you can cheat anymore but with NC State and Wade, I expect to find out.
I grew up in Appalachia, love me some Huggy Bear, and made almost the same joke (mine was that his contract would have to include a driver on 24-hour standby).Did you really think this was funny?

He's 71.I grew up in Appalachia, love me some Huggy Bear, and made almost the same joke (mine was that his contract would have to include a driver on 24-hour standby).
And he would absolutely be a great hire for Minnesota (but will certainly not happen).
And it's true that Minnesota has elite facilities for rehab that might help him. Hazelden in St. Paul comes to mind. But again, very little chance.
I have zero respect for Huggins as a person. I have zero respect for Cincinnati for keeping him as long as they did with about a 25% graduation rate. I can only assume they just gave away degrees at WV when he was there.I grew up in Appalachia, love me some Huggy Bear, and made almost the same joke (mine was that his contract would have to include a driver on 24-hour standby).

I'd be fine if they announced Medved as the new coach at some point today - Wed this week, before they get into March Madness. The more I watched their game today, and the more likelihood that Wade is going to NC State and McCollum is likely Iowa bound, the more I get behind it.

I just don't want some program with more money to pay to watch the first two rounds this week/weekend and go "hmm, maybe we should go hard after this Medved guy! I like what I see!"
If a hiring executive bases a decision on a couple of games, she is a fool. Niko has been on a consistent slope up for years and has to on lists all over the country. If we hire him, it’s like we’re a Major League Baseball team trying to hide a 16 year old Dominican player so no one else can find him.I'd be fine if they announced Medved as the new coach at some point today - Wed this week, before they get into March Madness.

If the deal is done, nothing that happens this week makes any difference.

He was 52-17 and coming off an elite eight appearance.<cough>Monson</cough>
Holloway from St. Peter's to Seton Hall as well. Miracle run after a so-so season a few years ago and they're worse than us right now<cough>Monson</cough>
For the record, I am also an alcoholic. Lighten up Francis.Did you really think this was funny?
