New Coach Short List

So you have Niko 5th on your list but will bitter if he's the guy?
Niko "Settle" Medved is 11th.

And FTR, I already guessed he'd be the hire.

Bitter is a bit strong.

Disappointed. Resigned, maybe.

It's a broad term that's been bastardized to generally blame a group of people that aren't white males for problems regardless of whether the blame is warranted or not. It's a dog whistle and it's usage is increasing as a catch all.
I'm sorry, this exchange just has me laughing inside which is why I visit these boards on occasion. I'm actually impressed with how civil most of you have been. Congrats!

Everyone has an opinion on something like DEI. Poor, golfing18now had no idea what he was starting, but was smart enough to bow out of the discussion. I guess that means I'm not very smart to enter it! Ha! What has me smiling is I can't figure out who has the dog whistle in this series of exchanges and who's the dog? Let's be honest, maybe the whistle is getting passed around a little bit and people are switching roles???

Just trying to lighten things up guys...;)

Very interesting exchanges on the potential new coach. I'm a bball novice, but would like to see a good Gopher basketball program so thanks for bringing me up to speed!!!

Fair question...but my "criteria" is solely based on personal opinion. The U will not commit financially to building the program and that in itself makes it nearly impossible to attain the level of coach that revitalizes my passion for the team.

Wade, Mack and McCollum would all give me a little spark. Medved does not.
Quick Google search and glance at the blogosphere says McCollum has his choice of Iowa and Indiana,

Okay...like getting Sponge Bob socks from Santa. 😉

Medved appears to be a fine coach but he simply does nothing for me. Honestly, I'd rather have Tauer.

I will admit that my hopes for the next coach are probably unrealistic, but that's exactly what this program needs.
I was hoping for a splashy hire as well, but look at Medved's record. The guy is a winner who knows how to coach. We are always comparing ourselves to Wisconsin. Was there anything exciting about Bo Ryan or Greg Gard when they got hired? No, but look where they are today.

If we hire Medved, I'm hoping he is the guy to finally get us on the Wisconsin level. And that would be a home run.

I also think some of us are downplaying BECAUSE he has Minnesota ties. We are so damaged by BJ that we want to go opposite of that. But if Medved had no MN ties, I think he's probably a pretty good looking candidate.

Or I am just trying to convince myself he'll be good because that's all I can do about it...

Setting aside your opinion that U is unwilling to commit financially, who meets your criteria?

I believe that if Medved grew up in Arizona or any of the 49 states other than Minnesota he would never be on anyone’s radar, including Coyle’s. The “one of us” angle is strong and it is real.

I disagree. Successful Mountain West coaches will always be on the radar. Leon Rice is too. Pitino would be if not for the obvious.

The Strib asked a few high school BB coaches their take on the coaching search:

Barry Wohler, Orono (and former Gophers player)
“I would like to see more support for the next coach. How about some NIL money? You can’t give a coach the minimum amount of NIL and lose two of your top players to Texas Tech and Texas A&M. I put as much of that on [Mark] Coyle as anybody else. If you’re going to hire a coach, support him. Ben Johnson and assistant Dave Thorson are tremendous coaches.”

Bryce Tesdahl, Minnetonka
“[Colorado State coach] Niko Medved is your first and only call. Whatever it takes to get the job done. Keep Dave Thorson on staff. Bring home a proven head coach winner that is from the great state of Minnesota!”

The board said the same thing about Kill and he had them in a New Year's bowl.

I already gave you three (3) names of possible coaches I like better and I could give you a dozen more. I'm glad Nico floats your boat, though. You seem to be in the majority.

How about Bob Huggins? I mean, Minnesota has a couple of top-tier alcohol prevention centers in the country that could help keep him dry.

I never said that, just looking for who your top 2-3 are based on your criteria.

You guys can (and should!) discuss this as much as you want, create as many threads as you want.

It's going to be Medved.

That's the safe pick.

After going out on a limb and gut feel, that Coyle did with Ben Johnson, he's going to go with a safe pick.

It's Medved. Get your minds used to the idea
The more I watched their game today, and the more likelihood that Wade is going to NC State and McCollum is likely Iowa bound, the more I get behind it.

Wade and NC State is perfect fit. Their best eras have been when they were cheating. And their crazy fans ran their best coach since Valvano out for not cheating.

I don't know how you can cheat anymore but with NC State and Wade, I expect to find out.
