New Coach Short List

Craig T is not the MW commissioner. Old list?
I don't know- the article is 4 days old and said that the committee serves a 5 year term.

The committee consists of conference commissioners and athletic directors. Members are nominated by their conference and serve five-year terms.

According to the NCAA, here are the members of the selection committee.

  • Mitch Barnhart, director of athletics, University of Kentucky
  • Tom Burnett, commissioner, Southland Conference
  • Janet Cone, director of athletics, University of North Carolina Asheville
  • Bernadette McGlade, commissioner, Atlantic 10 Conference
  • Michael O’Brien, vice president and director of athletics, University of Toledo
  • Jim Phillips, vice president for athletics and recreation, Northwestern University
  • Chris Reynolds, vice president for intercollegiate athletics, Bradley University
  • Craig Thompson, commissioner, Mountain West Conference
  • Kevin White, director of athletics, Duke University

This article on the committee doesn't list Coyle. You are probably right but...just not seeing it here.

This is what I saw:

"Minnesota athletic director Mark Coyle is a member of the NCAA Tournament selection committee and was in Indiana yesterday, with the committee beginning its work to build the 68-team tournament bracket. After the Golden Gophers lost to Northwestern in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament Wednesday in Indianapolis, Coyle reportedly flew back to Minneapolis late in the day to fire Johnson."

Holy crap, this is a long thread already!

I hate to say it, but I doubt we'll be able to land one of the unrealistic choices. That said, we don't want to reach for someone who is experiencing success right now but might just be a flash in the pan. That's why you do have to vet any candidates thoroughly. I would look for someone who's succeeded for multiple years and potentially at multiple stops.

My personal favorites (without me fully vetting or interviewing them, haha):

DeVries
Mack
McCollum
Odom
Wade
Huss
Hodgson
Medved

And yes, give some consideration to Tauer. That fucker's got the knack, man.

He isn’t even on the selection committee, that’s just what he tells his wife so he can disappear for a few days without her questioning him.

Think this is the 3rd time I've posted this:
!. Will Wade
2. Will Wade
3. Will Wade
4. Will Wade
5. Shaka Smart (i added this one in just to change it up a little)

What Wade did at LSU is perfectly permissible now. He's got history but so do a lot of coaches at big-time schools. Bruce Peal anyone? How about John Calipari? A side dish of Calvin Sampson? Hell, UNC had completely fake classes and Ol' Roy is still celebrated like he's a saint. The list goes on and on.

We need to do something BIG....I'm hoping Coyle could sell Wade on the possibilities here. Revenue sharing plus the $$$ that is in this area (Fortune 500 companies) as well as some wealthy alumni who are starving for a winner could make this a great place. We need someone who's going to connect with them and go get it. The expectations are incredibly low and realistic.

Get 'er done Coyle.

Will Wade is at the top of my wishlist, as well. What he's done at McNeese is nothing short of remarkable. I know NC State is looking too, but if I'm a coach, I'd rather go to a B1G school

I'm all on the Will Wade train. There is a lot of pressure to coach at NCSU and having to compete against Duke and UNC every year. Come to MN, build us up, keep a few good recruits home, get some good recruits from the south. If we hire WW we will be good from day 1.

We have to shoot big;
Chris Beard
DeVries
McCollum
Huss possibly
Odom
Hodgson, interesting candidate
Niko - last resort option

I don't see it with Chris Mack or Craig Smith

I agree with your assessment - the rivals are meat grinders. However, I wonder if Wade would find North Carolina State more attractive because the ACC probably provides an easier path to winning conference games and getting into the tourney right now.

Yes, he also seems like the personality to take on that challenge.

They should rehire Haskins for a day and apologize to him for how they treated him.

The NCAA also owes him an apology. They gave him a 7-year show cause penalty.

Yet people like Bill Self get to walk around with a sh1t-eating grin, make millions, cheat their asses off, lie about it, and hang banners.

The real crime is the NCAA let Self, Roy Williams, Calhoun, Calipari, Coach K, and the rest get away with it.

Concur with your top 4.
