NDSU goes down

Holy shit. That game was like 28-14 Bison when I was flipping through earlier. I was watching the Montana/SDSU game. This makes me happy though. There are literally Bison fans who think their team is the best in the country - at any level. I've met them.

There's been a lot more chatter in the last month or so about them getting a Mountain West invite before the end of the year. We'll see.
Could happen but the scuttle is entirely coming from North Fargoans reading that into the Polasek contract extension.

Lol. If they ever move up they need to get rid of they dumpy dome and play some real college football outside. The Fargodome is also not a Division 1 stadium.
Well, since the Bison are the current NCAA Division 1 Football Champions, that's not an accurate statement.

For the convenience of GH users, the site has labeled each string with the headline that the OP chose to indicate the topic contained in it. For example, this one is labeled "NDSU Goes Down."

If you are not interested in that topic, you can skip over it. There is no penalty for doing so. Nor is there any obligation to comment in it about its appropriateness.

Probably needs a new forum if it threatens too many idiots

The absolute worst. Their fans truly think they would make the FBS playoff every year and be a top half of the big 10 team every year. I saw some posts suggesting moving to the B12 would be pointless because they'd win that every year. Easily for me the single dumbest fan base in the country.

Correct. Absolutely delusional.

Thanks for correcting me. I know the teams from last year in the playoff were Oregon, Georgia, Boise State, Arizona State, Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Tennessee, Indiana, SMU, and Clemson. Somewhere in their is NDSU. I am sure they were just left off the list which is odd since they must have beat Ohio State. It must have been a good game.

Ohio State won the CFP - College Football Playoff. In case you were unaware, that is not an NCAA sanctioned or sponsored championship. NDSU is a division one team. They've even played in March Madness (more recently than the Gophers.)

This is what NDSU's trophies look like. Assuming you can read, read what they say. (FWIW, I can't stand the Bison or their fans, but what I'm writing is 100% correct.)

Here's one of their banners. What does it say? If they don't play in a Division 1 stadium, where exactly are they playing that they win these?

The portal absolutely destroyed NDSU and SDSU this year. If you're really good in FCS for a few years in a row, you are going to go down quick because half your team is going to be taken by FBS schools.
I fear that is going to be the model for a lot of lesser-recruited high school players. Go to a sold FCS program, redshirt (especially linemen) and build yourself up, see the field for a couple of years, impress FBS schools, transfer up.

Correct. Absolutely delusional.
I’ve said it in other spots but the portal is destroying FCS programs. They can’t compete with exposure or $$$ without moving to FBS and opportunity to make the CFP.

These teams lost tons of commits last week at the last minute when P4 programs filled out their classes of 30-40 kids in some cases.

Now you have multiple former coaches with ties to these schools and recruiting area pulling kids up a level because they know who can and can’t play.

It's not just the portal. It's also SO many teams moving up in the last ten years. With the exception of the Dakota Four and Montana Two, most of the more successful schools have moved up. Sam Houston, JMU, Kennesaw, Jacksonville, Delaware, Missouri State, etc. Even raising the price to move to FBS didn't stop Delaware.

That the two main HBCU conferences, the SWAC and the MEAC choose to not send their champions to the postseason tournament doesn't help either. I think the Ivy finally participating in the post season is a good thing.

For sure. I’d also guess that these rosters are littered with failed P4 guys who couldn’t play at their original destination.

The portal taketh. The portal giveth.

The failed P4 guys seem more often than not to be fools gold. ZOf course there are always exceptions - Aiden Bouman for instance, who transferred from Iowa State to South Dakota.

All true except Missouri State. Couldn't compete at FCS but is bowl eligible in C-USA.

It literally is
Maroon doesn't understand what division 1 means.

I actually just watched the last five minutes of the NDSU-ISU game on YouTube. Pretty exciting. One thing they did keep mentioning is there were 10,000 at the game. That's only about half full. Did the game really draw that poorly? I know NDSU historically has not drawn that well for playoff games, even though the whole city travels for the national championship game it seems.

NDSU simply has to acknowledge that they truly are in a lower division I bracket. For some reason, folks affiliated with NDSU don't get it and have been drinking the Kool aide for years.

Was Missouri State largely picked because of location? I honestly don't know that much about their program compared to some of the others.

I did just watch a piece on Sacramento State. A year ago they were poised to move up to FBS - and then their waiver to do so with no conference invite got denied and now since they decided to prematurely leave the Big Sky, they're stuck with no football conference, their big stadium plans seem to have been vaporware, and now the program is in shambles.

Meanwhile, nearby UC Davis is joining the MWC next year and will probably upgrade their football program to FBS in the next few years.

I don't know if Mo St was picked by C-USA due to size and geography? The school had been posturing for FBS for a long time even though the FB program was generally average at best and usually poor.

Sac St wrote the blue print on how to really muck things up. It's almost as if they thought being without a conference would make them more attractive. The stadium thing no one ever believed would happen. Admin at Sac St needs to be held accountable from the governing body all the way down to the AD, the president especially.

Cal Davis is a huge school with a big endowment. When the all-but-FB sports announced a move to MWC, it had to be assumed FB wouldn't be far behind. They just recently announced major facility upgrades, including to the FB stadium. Davis is California's ag campus and enjoys a lot of support.

They are well aware. That's why there is a constant cry to move to FBS. No acknowledgement needed.

The bloom went off the rose 5 or 6 years ago. During the prior decade sellouts were still routine but I think by 2019 attendance started to swoon. I would have thought that in the new decade, when the inevitability disappeared, that it would have been more interesting. I can't imagine the average fan is making a statement about anything in particular (re: FBS).

The craziest thing to me about their run since 2011, they've played a total of 51 playoff games. 37 of those have been at home, 11 neutral and just 3 on the road (all of which happened in 2022).

The other thing is a big draw for NDSU football has always been the tailgate party. Once you get to late November and December in Fargo, it gets pretty miserable.

That's very true but their attendance has been down for regular season games, too. They averaged about 16,000 a game at a stadium that seats just under 19,000 coming off a national championship. I think it was an improvement over 2024 by about a 1,000 people per game. SDSU has averaged more people per game for the last several seasons, this year included, but attendance really nose dives in November, especially this year after the losing streak. Even in great years, playoff attendance in Brookings is not good. The weather, holidays, tailgate. Lots of reasons for drop off.
