Naught SS chants

Meh. I was in the student section 22 years ago. We weren't creative.

...but we didn't need an 80% discount to get us to come to a game.

I can absolutely guarantee that the language at the game yesterday isn't remotely as bad as what I heard every day on the bus to and from school...

+1

F*** Tom Izzo?
really?
Tom Izzo?

that is what was embarrassing.

I don't know about the rest of the stuff, but the student section - until yesterday - has pretty much sucked since Dan Monson took over. Sorry. It's the truth. I know there are dozens of die hards every year and that is great and I thank them. That said, it's been a pathetic showing overall for a long, long time.

If you are back, then welcome back. I will love it if you are. It makes a difference. But the pre-season pretty much sucked as far as student turnout. So I'm not convinced after one game.

What was the timing of the chant? Was it when Trevor went off the side of the court and the delay caused confusion about whose ball it was or how much time was on the shot clock?

The swearing doesn't bother me. Glad to have the students there and loud. Just seems lame and unoriginal. Make up something more original and pointed at the other team. Would really like to see the complaining coaches called out.

the Grinch (flopping badgers),
NW (should be able to come up with something about not making the NCAAs)
Indiana (tan Tommy - plenty weird)
Illinois (they quit on their coach last year), etc.

dboy, I was wondering if you had died. I completely agree with you. Tom Izzo is a hall of fame coach, an amazing ambassador for the Big Ten and college basketball in general and is nothing but class.

Yes.

I was at the game but when I rewatched it on tv they said it was trying to figure out the time on the shot clock.

A few points then:
- Damn lucky we didn't lose Trevor again on that. He appears to go down on the concrete pretty hard. I don't know how well TV caught it, but his momentum carried him off the court and he had one foot on the court/media table and one on the metal railing, then he slipped and went down. That was a scary moment.
- If they truly were just checking for the time remaining on the clock (which is what I assumed), then they could do a better job of explaining that to the coaches while it is happening rather than after the fact. Izzo clearly thought it was MSU ball there (I can see how he thought that, but it wasn't) and I'm sure he assumed the reason TV went down to look at the monitor was to review the possession question.

Go f*ck yourself. Some of us have been supporting this program for decades, showing up through good times and not so good. It's great when the students get it going but tired of these shots where they act like the only ones with a pulse. If it's warranted, bet your ass many of us are up and cheering. However, I don't do fake enthusiasm just because a camera is on.

Wow....

You mad?

You must have a tough time getting through life being that high and mighty.... "This is my way, and you're all idiots for doing it a different way! WRAR!!!"

When I was a student, we chanted "f-ing midget...f-ing midget (while doing the arm motion towards Izzo in unison)" at Izzo whenever he started arguing with the refs. Seemed much more clever and appropriate than a simple "f Tom Izzo."

On another note, I once had the band leader specifically tell me to watch my language at the game in the student section. In which I, and dozens around me replied, "go f-k yourself!" I didn't get up at 6am to drink keg beer for a noon game to sit and cross my legs and clap when appropriate.

I will take the f you chants any day over watching the curmudgeons on both sides of half court, arms crossed, with a scowl on their faces the ENTIRE game. I was at the game and although the barn was rocking, it could be so much better of an atmosphere if the 100 yr. old season ticket holders would have show the slightest enthusiasm.

For *** sake, I remember Michigan st. fans chanting at Iverson about his acne issues while he was at the free throw line a few years ago. Students aren't there to be classy, they are there to be rowdy and drunk and at times mean. That is how you get a home court advantage!

On a final note, it took me about 10 seconds to decipher what the students were chanting at Izzo. I doubt your 8 year old noticed.

I'm pretty sure the refs can't go to the monitors to review who the ball went off of last.

What I think was confusing about that play at first was that the ref pointed at the Michigan St. player to say it went off of him and then pointed in the Gophers direction. I watched the replay and even the announcers thought he had pointed Michigan St. ball right away, but he clearly was pointing at the player.

I was only confused by the confusion. The ref clearly pointed at the player and then the possession(in the opposite direction).

Had a real good angle of the play from my seat, and it looked like Mbakwe touched it last. When I saw the replay I thought the same thing. We got a break there. I was just glad to see Mbakwe climb back on the floor.

I agree with you on Izzo. He knew what he was doing. He knew who the ref. was and that he could get away with it because of Valentine's reputation.

As far the language is concerned, I'm a parent and I've taken my 6-year-old daughter to football games. I know that the "risk" exists of her hearing a dirty word. I'm also not naive enough to think that she hasn't heard a lot that I'd rather not have her hear from other kids on the bus or at recess.

The thing that really got me was the old men behind me yelling and swearing at the Mich State bench to sit down during play. One even went racist on them and said "hey white bench players who never play, sit down so we can see the game". The Mich State players probably thought nothing of it because where they play(Breslin Center), everybody and their grandmother is up and cheering during the whole game! Lets just say I didn't look back when we would jump around after a big play or stand and cheer on a big possession.

+100 That is the only reason I didnt like it. It is Tom Izzo. I respect and like the guy as a coach. And the student section wasn't all in either. It seemed like 50 of them thought it was cool, everyone else thought it was dumb.

Now. When it happened to Bo Ryan. I thought it was the greatest chant. I hate Bo Ryan with a passion. The ENTIRE student section was chanting it, along with many many older people. It was also a perfect time for it. The Tom Izzo chant, not at all.

I was sitting over there, and it was really annoying. With the way those lower seats are situated, you cannot see a thing when those players are standing. I wanted to yell at them too, but knew it was pointless.

And you are probably a good enough parent to explain to her that sometimes people say things they shouldn't, and I'm sure she'll turn out just fine and not be scarred for life because of a basketball or football game at age six.

Mbakwe touched it last, but when the MSU player touched it he was standing on the out of bounds line. The play is dead as soon as an out of bounds player touches the ball.

There's a whole lot of room in between..............politics being the exception of course.

I would hope that students at a D1 University could come up with something more creative. I'm not a prude, but there are some words you just should not use in public. (FWIW, I got fired from a job once, and one of the reasons they gave for firing me included "excessive use of profanity." - true story).

As far as what Teague can do - I would like to see some kind of message played on the video board before games - maybe from Kaler - telling students to have fun, yell as loudly as you can - but don't use words you wouldn't use in class, or in front of your parents. And, if specific students can be identified, then I have no problem with the f-bomb crowd facing some type of reprimand- up to and including being ejected from the facility.

To the pro-profanity posters on here - the people who are offended by profanity paid for their seats, too - and I believe they do have a reasonable expectation that young children should not be exposed to that kind of language.

And they are fellow Gopher fans. They aren't the enemy.

Why do people keep putting up this magical wall between "profanity" and "creativity"??

You can have creative chants that are clean. You can have creative chants that are profane.

For instance, when Indiana comes to town, we could chant "WHO DOES NUMBER 2 WORK FOR???" or we could chant "TOM CREAN **** ROSANNE BARR *** IN *** ***!!!"

I can't believe there is even one person on here defending a F*** Tom Izzo chant. It was emabarrassing and classless and made us all look bad.

Why does this remind me of Bill Cosby and his experience playing football for Temple... :cheer:

Note to all the older guys here: Remember when we were that age and we thought we had all the answers?

It did NOT make me look bad. I already do, so I don't give a $hit if the f-bomb is used.
