Naught SS chants

I think they should have never stopped the band from playing that Gary Glitter song. I thought it was reasonably creative and unique to sing a capella to a song and insert "Sioux Suck" into it. But Maturi insisted on fighting fun, the intensity of the student section suffered, and all three revenue sports was inadequate under him. I think the U should be more focused on finding a way to get a quality product consistently on the field before the worry about what the student section chants.

I don't disagree that the chant is weak and should go, but you must not get out to other games/venues very often. Gopher games are extremely tame compared to other places I've been to.

No kidding, go to basically any sporting event on the East Coast if you want to hear some good stuff.

Seems like there's a lot of geezers in this thread. I love the obscene chants, they get the student section energized more than any other "clean" chant.

why cant the students just sit in their seats quietly like the rest of those in attendance at the barn?

I sit literally 15 feet from the student section. I sensed absolutely zero additional energy after the "FTI" chant compared to before.

Something else I've been wondering...

How long ago did the NCAA start allowing signs/faces at games? I tried to bring a sign into a game in college back in '87 and it was promptly confiscated at the door.

I like the joke, but that's all it is.

I was there yesterday. The entire place was rocking from the opening tip. The students were good, but no better than the rest of the place. Nice that they filled more than half their $5 seats, a nice change from the last 150 games............:D

My favorite is one when you lose, and you go... "Hey, hey, it's okay, you'll all work for us someday!" XD

This is a creativity issue, not a profanity issue.

What's not creative about giant face signs during free throws?

Props to the student section for being loud yesterday, but it is anything but creative. Maturi and the marketing dept. really hurt the student section when they decided sportsmanship initiatives, fan ambassadors, and general tameness were more important than a fun, raucous, and, most importantly, loud and engaged student section.

Aren't the giant faces handed out by ESPN? I could be wrong, but I thought that was the case.

So do the parents of children spending hundreds of dollars to take their families to the game.

Why does "A Christmas Story" come to my mind? "Do you know what Ralphie just said? F#@&! Do you know where he heard it?...No, No, he heard it from your son..."

I'm not condoning the chants, but the majority of children probably hear it from their "old man" much more than they'll ever hear it from the Gopher student section.

Go f*ck yourself. Some of us have been supporting this program for decades, showing up through good times and not so good. It's great when the students get it going but tired of these shots where they act like the only ones with a pulse. If it's warranted, bet your ass many of us are up and cheering. However, I don't do fake enthusiasm just because a camera is on.

I can absolutely guarantee that the language at the game yesterday isn't remotely as bad as what I heard every day on the bus to and from school...

Hold on, let me get this straight: GopherHole blows up when local media complains about the student section, especially when things are going well. I can't count the number of "well, if they can't find any faults with the team, I guess they'll go after the students" posts I've seen on this board.

And now a whole bunch of GopherHolers are freaking out at the student section because they're swearing, especially when the team is playing very well? Christ people, grow a non-hypocritical pair. Kids swear. Old people smell like mothballs and dying. These things, death, and taxes are the only certainties in life. If it offends you, you've probably got some bigger issues to worry about.

I'm getting a kick out of the conceit of the people who think "profanity is cool because I'm young and I like to say, like, a lot of swear words, and that's cool because, like, I'm a student, and that's like cool." I'm about ready to call my rep and ask her to pull the plug on funding the U, because it's obviously not working.

You know, the rest of us know all the swear words, too, but we choose not to use them in public with kids around because we have a little self control and self awareness.

Today's student section basically sucks. 20-30 years ago they were creative and funny and were part of the reason you wanted to show up and go to a college game. Now you attend in spite of them.

I don't see anyone freaking out.

And to be clear: I'm not complaining. I'm simply wondering out loud what Norwood could possibly do about it assuming he wanted to do something about it.

Update: Bad Gopher is freaking out.

What's obviously not working? Are you implying that the U is failing in its educational requirements, all because kids are swearing at a sporting event?

Congrats? If you take your kids into a public forum, you have to expect that they will encounter things that aren't all ponies and sunshine. If they go to a park, they'll get dirty. That dirt will help their immune system develop. If they go to a basketball game, they may hear people swear (just like anywhere else in public--including their schools). That experience may help them learn a lesson that it seems you never did: considering words to be taboo just gives them more weight. Clawing at your eyes because someone dropped an F-bomb isn't going to help.

The sky is falling. Everything today is significantly worse than it was when I was a kid. You hooligans know nothing about the good ol' days. This kind of rhetoric is just plain horrifying. I sincerely hope you don't actually live with this kind of mindset.

I don't know about the rest of the stuff, but the student section - until yesterday - has pretty much sucked since Dan Monson took over. Sorry. It's the truth. I know there are dozens of die hards every year and that is great and I thank them. That said, it's been a pathetic showing overall for a long, long time.

If you are back, then welcome back. I will love it if you are. It makes a difference. But the pre-season pretty much sucked as far as student turnout. So I'm not convinced after one game.
