Murray Warmath Retirement Reason

To me, it seems like the U is pulling a Rip Van Winkle with regard to Gopher Football. For 3+ decades, it slept through its obligations to maintain an excellent football program. The U has awoken, but big time college football has changed quite a bit during the slumber, and we have to learn what it takes to rebuild and sustain excellence. Painful process for those of us who have never tasted Gopher Football Glory. But as a 2000 grad of the U, I feel lucky that I was not old enough to suffer through the darkest days of Systemic Administrative Gopher Football Neglect. (Yup, I did capitalize that as if it were an official DSM-IVR diagnosis)

diehard, where I disagree with you is that the number one reason the football team has stayed in the crapper was the move to the Metrodome, which was not something that the academic types cared about one way or the other. That move was urged by Sid Hartman and his booster buddies on the Minneapolis Downtown Council.

If they would have updated Memorial Stadium, things would have been better for the Gophers.

Kool. Go for an apostrophe when you have miserably lost the point. Hope you find great solace in that. Most small people would. BTW, what is the difference in enrollment between NU and Minnesota? Number of alumni? You didn't go to Minnesota, did you? It is a really big school.

Read what I agreed with. I don't believe you do understand what a 50,000 seat program is. It's pinnacle is mediocrity in the BT.

This is a ridiculous argument. The stadium was built specifically to enable expansion. Unfortunately the current state of the program was that we could not draw 50,000 to the dome wearing home colors, in a controlled climate with some relatively mediocre/good teams in the Mason era. Building an 80,000 seat stadium at this point would have shown a commitment to unrealistic expectations more than anything else.

Finally we have by far the nicest most fan friendly stadium in the Big Ten, possibly in the country. Parking is not an issue, tailgating spots are not an issue, viewing the field or the scoreboards is not an issue. To argue that the 1 year old monument to football that is TCF Bank Stadium is a sign of mediocrity just seems silly.

Ha. You're funny. Lost the point? How so? What is your point? The one that's been proven horribly false?

BTW, what is the difference in enrollment between NU and Minnesota? Number of alumni?

What the hell does that have to do with anything? How does that change the fact that Northwestern won multiple championships in the last 15 years with a stadium that's even smaller than Minnesota's?

You didn't go to Minnesota, did you? It is a really big school.

I absolutely did. My wife did, both bachelor's and master's. I am also a U employee.

What does any of that have to do with anything?

Throw in the Ohio State brawl, Mitch Lee, Joe Salem, Lou Holtz bolting as soon as he got the chance but after he told the Regents to "tear that thing down", Luther Darville, Mason looking at LSU, MSU and begging to go to tOSU, Brandon Hall getting killed trying to break up a fight downtown, the tyranny of Chris Voeltz, Clem Haskins, Jan Gangelhoff, Deinhart and Giel saying that they didn't know what was going on in their departments, Monson, Monson's "almost firing", three players sexual misconduct, the Brewster debacle etc., etc.

Now add TWO 3rd Place finishes and only about 4 years of 50,000+ attendance in the football program in the last THIRTY-FIVE YEARS and it's pretty damn amazing that Bruininks has been able to add to athletic budgets rather then give in to the haters (and Souchery) at the U and just give up on "big time" athletics!

Glad he didn't, now let's get a better coach!

You boys are in a pissing match with a guy who has all the answers, thinks most everyone who disagrees with him is an idiot, and yet gets just about all of his ideas from Fox. Can you say, "Wingnut"?

And building an 80,000 seat stadium wouldn't give us an atmosphere like Penn State or Michigan. With 50,000 in the seats, it would be a tomb. But 50,000 in a 50,000 seat stadium, that rivals any other stadium.
