Most Excited About This Team in Years!! Bright Future!

I don't think Evans will be the Messiah next year, but Payne went from about 225 to 255 between the end of his senior year and the start of the season. I think our trainer knows what he's doing. Evans Dad is about 7 feet and must be about 320, he's huge. If Evans can put on 25-30 lbs as well, and combine that with a quick jump, a good shot-blockers timing, and a 7-7 wingspan, I'd like to see how he does against a guy like Walker from Nebraska. I think you'll see plenty of him starting right from the beginning next year, and can we ever use it!

By that logic Treyton Thompson should be 260lbs by now.

Well, actually, logic can be used when you look at a players frame and the frame of his parents. To suggest that Evans won't add weight and be much stronger a year from now doesn't seem to be using much logic. Check out the difference between Evans' dad and Thompson's dad. No guarantee, but I like the chances he's much bigger and stronger next year.

Show me the documentation where Coach Johnson told people on the roster to take a hike. I will wait for the evidence.

People left on their own volition. Who was kicked out?

Coaches, in every sport, have been telling athletes to take a hike for decades and generations, and you'll never find any "documentation" regarding any of those situations either.

You can't even have an honest discussion about any of this? Seriously?

I'm sure you already know this but that documentation is never presented to the public, anywhere. You still can't debate that those are the only two options. And even if it was their own decision, it was based on..... Anyway, the odds that the entire team left all on their own volition is not likely.

So you have nothing but a hunch. Got it. Perhaps Bob can come in and say "Your honor, that is hearsay."

Neither you nor I know anything about the conversations between players and coach. That's the honest conversation.

The reality is Evans will be a skinny, Freshman with very little offensive game, playing in the B1G. He's got all sorts of potential, but we should limit our immediate expectations.

I don't expect him to be a starter next season, but I do think he can play a nice role as a defensive specialist, and rim protector as he gets stronger, and learns the game.
Totally agree. No way he’s a savior year one.

Speaking savior, Xavier won tonight. I wonder if we could have signed that coach. I know he is on the failure path of winning but still.
He must not have read the memo that wins prior to year four don’t count and are to be ignored

Based on his mother's reactions on Twitter it seems to me that Tre Williams was asked to leave

So would you give Ben two more years. (Not do you think he will get, would you?) I guess obviously it depends on how next year actually goes.

Hearsay is a type of evidence.

100%. I don't even have to think about it. I expect real results in one full recruiting cycle, so I'm looking at where we'll be when our currrent Freshmen, are Seniors. If THAT team isn't competing for a B1G title, and making a serious run in the tourney, I'll be very disappointed.

People talk about how basketball can be a quick fix compared to football, but not if we're going to do it the right (imo) way. We've been mediocre-bad for so long that it's not an instant fix, short of using huge NIL/transfer money, or rolling the dice on guys with baggage.

Next year Payne, JOJ, Carrington & Henley will be Soph's, with Betts (presumably a red shirt this year?), Christie & Evans as Freshmen. That team will have legit B1G talent, and should start to take on their identity. I'll throw in Treyton Thompson as well, who I hope doesn't go anywhere, because I believe he will still develop into a good B1G player if we're patient. I still don't think we're a tourney team next season, but I expect we'll win a few B1G games, unlike this season. All part of the progression.

Hopefully CBJ can land a solid PG & a bruiser in the post, because (imo) those are our two most glaring needs right now.

Next year, barring transfers out, we will also have Ihnen and Fox. They are, at this point, wild cards. We are missing a quick point guard and my guess is Coach Johnson will work hard to try remedy that issue this spring.

You are assuming a great deal of positive player development. Can it happen? Sure.

Who sits when fox and II play their minutes?

I hope there is a place somewhere between a savior and someone not even starting on this team next year that Evans can fit in. This "skinny freshman" is the highest rated recruit this program has had in forever, he moves well, is by all accounts a very hard worker, has some post moves, has great shot-blocking instincts and a 7-7 wingspan. And he's going to start on the bench? Wow, I guess we're going to have an unbelievably good front line next year!

I would think he starts as well, but then again we're starting Taurus Samuels this season so anything is possible.

another off season for Payne and i really hope he can be that "bruiser" presence for us.

If he does not start and is as good as advertised either the gophers are great or BJ should be fired. If he starts and plays 22-26 minutes a game, stays out of foul trouble, and can score 8-10 points and block some shots that will really help. But I just don’t expect him to be a 18-10 star line guy from day one.

Personally I'd be surprised if they're both back, as I don't envision either Ihnen, or Fox being a difference maker next year, but as you say, they're wildcards. This is just conjecture on my part, no inside info, but in my mind they'll be able to add an Eric Curry type element.

2015-16 was a disaster too..

But knowing Coffey was coming in the next year, with young guys like Mason, Murphy, Dupree getting a lot of experience made it exciting going into 2016-17.

I feel the same vibes this year as then. Next year will be a major jump up. Very promising.
