MN Daily Op-Ed: Norwood Teague and Title IX

As I understand it, Title IX is about more than just the # of scholarships. It was meant to address a hypothetical situation where the men's basketball team was flying charters to away games, and the women's basketball team had to cram the entire team into a 1979 Ford Aerostar Van with rear-wheel drive. The idea is to equalize the playing field. Is it perfect? No! Do some aspects of it seem silly? Yes! but if you took it away, I'm afraid that women's non-revenue sports would vanish a lot sooner than men's non-revenue sports.

Oh - and I propose we rename Section2 as Section8 - because this is the craziest thread I've read in ages.

Section 2 (X 4) should do quite nicely s.o.n....

Don't be afraid. Men had to walk before they could run. 50 years ago men had to cram into that van. The sport evolved to where it is today, the price was paid by the previous generation of players. Women seem to believe that they should be right where men are today, but they haven't earned it. There is no effort to keep women down, there just isn't enough organic support. Let it happen, quit trying to force it. Women's volleyball is an example of women earning it.

Club sports aren't sponsored?

They are, but the opportunities are not limited. That is, if 25 students approach the U and say they want to start a lacrosse club and they want access to the same $2,500 that the soccer club gets for jerseys and referees, they get it regardless of their gender. This satisfies the third test for title IX.

Varsity opportunities and scholarships are limited which is why they are treated differently.
