He is from Mississippi. He probably wanted the chance to get a free education and play football. Maybe he wanted to be close to home.

But does any of that mean that he is not allowed to evolve his beliefs and speak out on something (just because he didn't before)? Maybe he feels more support in this new climate speaking out as a black student in a state like Mississippi. Maybe his priorities have changed during this last month.

The Confederate battle flag was added to some states' flags in the South not during the Civil War but in the 60s and 70s to show defiance of the new Civil Rights acts and desegregation of schools , public transit businesses etc.
It was purely a racist act.

Yeah, Georgia added it in the 50s and removed it in 2001. Mississippi is the only state to still have the confederate battle flag as part of its state flag. Has had it since 1894. Most of those southern states still have a license plate option with it.

Um, is he not giving them an ultimatum? Change it or i'll leave? Yet HE'S the one who chose to attend Miss State, not like, 12 years ago but less than 4. And if his convictions were that strong, then a whatever excuse you laid out is moot. I'm going to guess he had no idea what the Mississippi flag even looked like before hand, kind of like 99% of even Minnesotans had no idea what Calvin Griffith said 42 years ago. The 'im woke now' crowd is actually becoming quite tiring...
 

There are some people who feel that student athletes are serfs bound to the team that they initially signed to and played for.
That young man has a perfect right to see that flag and what it stands for in light of recent events to and tell the state at large change it or I leave.
If being woke means that I believe that all men and women deserve equal rights than I am proud to be called woke.

OMG, you're becoming tiring. I cannot believe you are actually arguing that an individual is not allowed to change their opinions or beliefs in 4 years. That's a lifetime when someone is in their most formative years.

Regardless, your argument that "he should have known what he was getting" is ridiculous. So people just have to put up with things being a certain way because that's how they've been? I'm pretty sure that's the argument Gov. George Wallace was using in Alabama to try and keep schools segregated in the late 60s.

All these people speaking up for change for the better must really be wearing you down, eh? I mean, what an awful thing to raise your voice for. :confused:

Some of the posts on this thread really reek of "these blacks should know their place" mindset. I feel like I'm watching "Mississippi Burning" again
 

Hopefully the Pirate, Captain Leach, can right the ship. They might get their ass kicked every SEC game, but man I feel like they're gonna pull something crazy out of their ass and beat one of the big dogs.

But Jesus, look at this 4 game stretch - vs the Aggies, at Bama, at LSU and vs Auburn. It might get ugly.

Such as? Can you give us examples of "some states" that did this in the 60s and 70s? I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't know of any states that actually did this.

I believe the president of the university already said the flag should change and Leach backed him so at least on that level they're all the same page, not likely to be much conflict there.

Thanks. That's at least one that did it then. Here's an interesting article with history I didn't know. Per the article, it was definitely changed in the 50's with racism in mind (versus just being a symbol that didn't have meaning). The Democratic Party wanted segregated schools, and pushing this through was part of their sending a message as to their stand. The Republican Party fought against it, didn't win that battle, but finally in 2003 they succeed in getting it removed from the flag. Sonny Perdue, who Trump brought into his cabinet in 2017, ran for Governor of Georgia in 2002 on a platform that included changing the flag. He won, the flag was changed. I think Mississippi is the only state that still has the confederate symbol in their flag.

Not just change/evolve their beliefs. He probably has felt that way his whole life, about Miss flag.

But recognizing when suddenly an opportunity has risen up, to finally make a difference. The winds of change come blowing, now and then. And he has a fantastic platform to take advantage of, and make a difference.

I applaud the young man for having that courage. Knowing full well that racist whites in Miss could blackball him from future employment opportunities, bank loans, etc. holding that grudge for the rest of their lives.

That's an interesting take

I'm sure southern dixiecrats back than fought for segregated schools, I don't think it was platform of the DNC. DNC was split on issue geographically.

Sonny Perdue comment is some extreme mental gymnastics. Roy Barnes, a democrat, wanted to change flag and proposed legislation to do so. He passed legislation to make the change which was passed and he signed off on. This pissed of many Georgians. Perdue ran on letting citizens vote on the flag (which supporters of 56 flag very much wanted). Perdue never stated position, but as state senator he opposed a proposed change of shrinking rebel symbol, so I don't believe he was an advocate of change. But sure, Perdue supported getting rid of the confederate symbol that had already been removed despite previously opposing any change....

That institutions fly symbols of era of suppression.Yes. We will have tough decisions for some. Yale university is named for not only a slave owner but a slave trader !
