MinnPost Article on Scheduling (or why no Minnesota vs St. Thomas game yet)

Considering Minnpost readers don’t actually watch sports and think the U shouldn’t even have teams this makes perfect sense.

Bull, I was at the MinnPost Festival. The Timberwolves Forum was full, even though it was before the KAT trade was official, so the team officials couldn't comment.

Between Borzi and Robson, sports is covered pretty good.

UST and Gophers should be set in stone every year.

The "nothing to gain" mindset from the Gophers side is ridiculously soft.

What do you have to gain from playing North Texas...
I agreed with "there's nothing to gain playing them" take initially but it's now to the point where all of the local sports media that barely pay attention to college basketball would predict a St. Thomas win and you actually have more to gain than to lose.

Ben just has such a loser's mentality. Worried about losing this, scared of this, we could never beat this team, etc.

It's already been decided if that's the way you're going to think. So damn sick of it. It's embarrassing this guy got the job and has held it for 4 years.

I’ll give you the t wolves and twins. As far as gopher sports go anyone that reads Minnpost couldn’t care less.

Regarding the Gopher women...their non conference schedule is more laughable than Ben's.
Iowa women play brand name opponents non conference Big 12, SEC etc ...then they play Drake, Iowa St and Northern Iowa for a walk on the wild side.
Result: Iowa women are a tough out. Gophers? Not so much.
8 non conf home games:
Central Conn
Vermont
U Mass Lowell
E Illinois
Montana
North Florida
Jackson St
Prairie View A&M

There are a lot of embarrassing quotes from Ben in that article...yikes
For the record, I'd like to see us play the Tommies every year, however, I strongly disagree that Ben's statements were embarrassing. He was honest, straight-forward and concise. I was pleasantly surprised he didn't avoid the question or speak in unintelligible platitudes as he tends to do.

I mean I'd rather play North Texas than UST. Bethune Cookman and Morgan State on the other hand I can see where you're coming from

I agree and agree with his statement. It is all about the NET for high major teams and it definitely makes sense to play teams that have similar styles to what you'll see in conference. Unfortunately his actions haven't backed up those words. Which is weird because Livingston put some good schedules from a net perspective to together under Pitino so it's clearly coming from above.

When it comes to the mantra "Go big or go home", Gopher Athletics never seem to leave their basement.

"I think it’s really hard to justify why that would benefit us, when I feel there’s so much to lose.” Really? Is a loss to N. Texas any worse? UST could fill the barn which is something Ben's schedule has failed to do. Field a team that is better than St. Thomas Ben then you won't have to worry about losing. A BIG school afraid to schedule UST is an embarrassment.

Johnson said he sought teams that resembled specific Big Ten opponents. So UST plays some type of foreign basketball? How does that apply to playing a post season opponent that differs greatly from BIG opponents? IMO, its an opportunity for this team to grow. Quit hiding behind Mom's skirt Ben.

Fair enough, just get 'em on the schedule. It'd be a fun game every year.

If you're the Gophers and you're so worried about losing, just win the game....And if you can't, that's all we need to know about the coaches and players we currently have.

He doesn't want to do that either.

In same same article he said we could never get a home and home with a Duke caliber opponent. And also said we'd never schedule a series with a team we couldn't beat.

Pathetic and embarrassing

Washington has played Seattle every year since Seattle rejoined D1 sports in 2008. Last night UW lost for the first time since they restarted the series.

While I am sure WSU and Oregon fans are making fun of UW, the general consensus seems to be more that it’s cool that Seattle finally pulled it off.

It’s time to play St. Thomas, I think it would be cool to be the opening game in the new arena they are building.
