They got Frankie Fidler in the portal, more of a SF type. They did recruit Jase Richardson, Jason Richardson's son, not sure how much PG he'll play though. Looks like it will be Holloman and Jeremy Fears running the point.

I like the makeup of our backcourt, but we lost some shooting. We added a lot of size, depth, and versatility, but we did lose some shooting.

That said, I know others have looked at this kind of like "money ball", I don't think the difference will be massive.If we assume all of Hawkin's, Christie's, and Carrington's three point attempts will be replaced by attempts by Asuma, Femi, Rigsby, Patterson, and Williams - it's probably pretty close.

And our defense should be better without Hawkins and Christie getting pushed around.

I don’t completely disagree, but for the long term development of the team and the overall program, you sometimes needs to have an eye on development. If they aren’t prepared compete or don't show the potential to develop, they sit and probably transfer. I guess I'm hoping the new additions are good enough to contribute.
 



I saw this kid play in high school for Brooklyn Center at Hopkins in a Breakdown event. I believe he was a junior, maybe a sophomore. He was not the strongest, or the quickest, but had a great feel for the game. He controlled the game from his point guard position. That is something you can't teach. He reminds me of a smaller David Roddy. If he plays close to what Roddy did for CSU the Gophers will be in good shape.

I agree that Patterson likely will replace Christie's freshman per game scoring numbers. As far as Christie's shooting, he was very good on 3s (.391, second on the team to only Mitchell) but he was dead last on the team on 2s (42%). I know that 3s are preferred from an analytics perspective but sometimes you just have to take the two point shot. It's not like Christie rarely took the two point shot (he averaged 4 two point shots and 5.4 three point shots per game).

I think it's fair to assume that they are capable of contributing to one degree or another because most of them have over an extensive period. Below is a table of D1 games played and D1 games started for five of the six transfer commits.

Mitchell is a bit of an odd case. He played one year at a Canadian school, sat out a year after transferring to a US D1 school, and played one year there before transferring here. Given that he was 4th in the nation in rebounds per game, second in the nation in total rebound percentage, and had a player Efficiency Rating of 22.3 in his only American D1 season, I'd say he's an acceptable risk. At worst we probably have a poor man's version of the collegiate Reggie Evans.

The 6th transfer, Williams from Macalester, is also very experienced but all at the D3 level. I figure he's intended as a spot player for some free throw shooting (83.7%) since we have some bad free throw shooters on the roster and an occasional three pointer (34.2%).

Ben obviously recruited here with the priorities of getting experienced and mature players at a feasible price.

Hopefully having a bunch of guys with a lot of experience will make it possible for them to gel quickly, similar to how the first team did.

Johnson needs this team to come together quickly and start playing at a high level if he wants to have any shot of saving his job. Will be interesting to see how well all the pieces fit together.

We lost a lot of potential from the team last year and it is unlikely we can replace the players that Payne and Christie would have become. But hopefully we will be pleasantly surprised by this new collection of players combined with the handful of returning pieces.

Roster is deep and very experienced with Garcia as the clear cut #1 option. Now we get to wait and see how they all play together.

I’m curious how many people on this board know who Reggie Evans is. I’d take a poor man’s Reggie Evans, but he is an analogy that probably gets lost on all but the oldest of us. Every team needs a guy who just goes and gets the ball.

Sure, I'd take a poor man's Reggie Evans in a heartbeat! Hopefully, Mitchell isn't as dirty as Evans though. You may recall that Evans was caught and fined by the NBA for grabbing an opposing player's testicles.

As far as people knowing the name, some of the older posters might. He did play in the Big Ten and 13 years in the NBA.

Agree and that should make them interesting to watch. I also expect there will be good and bad games. I just think that thisxteam as azwhole nay becgreater then the sum. They look like they have been built to fit together!

The first team gelled really quickly but had no front court size or depth so they predictably struggled as the season wore on and especially in conference play.

This team is better constructed in terms of front court and back court mix. Will be interesting to see if it all comes together and results in an improvement over last season. Definitely going to be an uphill battle but Ben is coaching for his future so will get to see if he was able to find the players he needed in order to get it done.

Miles Tarver was a poor man's J'son Stamper. Or was it the other way around? Both were fine as long as they never dribbled. Or shot beyond 2 feet.
