Minnesota’s Corey Hetherman new defensive coordinator at Miami

What’s he getting there versus here?
Hasn’t come out yet.
If it’s less than 1.8 a year I’ll be sad.
If it’s over 1.8 I feel like if they beat our raise by 50% of course they were going to get him even if we upped him again.

I'm impressed with what Hetherman was able to do here in 1 year even with a lot of injuries in the secondary, (walley, green, and Gousby).

His defense was ranked 4th in the B1G in ppg allowed.

Next man up.

Not sure what statistics would equate to “great” for you.
I thought he got better as the year went on. But the Iowa game he was badly out coached in the second half

He made Kaliakmanis look like John Elway

I thought he was really good and we will miss him. I think there are other guys who can be just as good. We need to find one

Fleck granted Miami's head coach permission to speak with Heatherman. If you know Fleck, you know he never stands in the way of his players or coaches advancing their careers or securing better financial opportunities. The hiring process moved quickly, and Danny Collins is now the new defensive coordinator.

when Fleck says MN is a developmental program, I guess it means coaches, too.

If Winston DeL had a little more experience, I could have seen him as a candidate. but as others are speculating, will probably be Collins. he gets a lot of the credit for putting people like Nubin in the NFL and developing the young safeties including Perich, Brown and Gousby.

BTW, if you saw the thread on coaching salaries, MN raised the assistant coaching pool by $1-million for 2025. Hetherman was scheduled to make $1.2-million with additional bonuses for making a bowl game, etc. That's not bad money. It's just not the kind of money a school like Miami can pay out with their boosters, NIL support, etc.

in a perfect world, MN needs its own version of Phil Knight - an uber-rich dude who is willing to give millions of $$ to the Gophers. but, my friends, it ain't a perfect world. not even close.

Fair enough, but those two data points don’t override the total statistics of the year, which showed he had a great defense, one of the better ones in the country.

Also, Kaliakmanis was 50% passing that game, 3 tds and 1 pick, -19 yards rushing. Hardly Elway I’d say. Our offense blew that game.

did not play Oregon, Indiana or OSU.

That greatly helped the numbers.

Correct. But kaliakmanis went for 275 and 3 touchdowns

And John elways career completion % was only 56%

Hetherman was really good. I wish he didn’t leave.

If we keep everyone else, how big an impact does this really have? PJ is still here and it appears all the best remaining defensive assistants are still here and the ones that PJ thinks are the best just got a promotion and likely raises. I'm sure Corey made a difference in the defense's performance, but he's probably not the only one. I'm sure PJ has learned a few things from all the DCs that have been through here. Yes, he's known as mostly an offensive guy, but he's been a head coach for a long time, I'm sure he weighs in a lot on defense. The institutional knowledge should still be here. As long as PJ remains, that's the most important thing for continuity.

For those complaining that we don't spend enough on coordinators, which coordinator that left for more money are you dying to have back?

240 not 275. I’m just glad I got a “really good” instead of just “good” haha.

This Miami money is crazy, 4 mil for beck, 600k buyout plus a raise for heatherman in the past 24 hours

Unfortunately you are going to have these programs flush with cash just grabbing whoever they want. I like Heatherman, I like most on the board were underwhelmed and tired of the endless connection hires. He certainly proved me wrong. I loved the attacking style, very fun! Sad he is going but what can you do. I’d like to know where all this BiG TV money goes. It seems like we should have more than anyone else not in the BiG and SEC with the way TV contracts are done. Can anyone enlighten me on where it all goes?

We just don't pay. This is what happens. 3rd rate job by Coyle again. Maybe now he can spend and extra $200 on his new men's basketball coach.
I know this completely sucks and don't get me started on Coyle's bargain basement running of the men's B-Ball program, but we were never going to win this one. When a program is willing to not only give Hetherman a raise but also pay a $600K buyout we weren't going to win a bidding war. On top of that Hetherman saw the opportunity to recruit a defense with the wealth of talent in Florida. He barely needs to leave the state for kids if he has the NIL money behind him as well. That said, just hearing this pretty much ruined some of my excitement over our portal success.
