Minnesota’s Corey Hetherman new defensive coordinator at Miami

We just don't pay. This is what happens. 3rd rate job by Coyle again. Maybe now he can spend and extra $200 on his new men's basketball coach.
According to the info, he was set to make $1.2M here.

when Fleck says MN is a developmental program, I guess it means coaches, too.

If Winston DeL had a little more experience, I could have seen him as a candidate. but as others are speculating, will probably be Collins. he gets a lot of the credit for putting people like Nubin in the NFL and developing the young safeties including Perich, Brown and Gousby.

BTW, if you saw the thread on coaching salaries, MN raised the assistant coaching pool by $1-million for 2025. Hetherman was scheduled to make $1.2-million with additional bonuses for making a bowl game, etc. That's not bad money. It's just not the kind of money a school like Miami can pay out with their boosters, NIL support, etc.

in a perfect world, MN needs its own version of Phil Knight - an uber-rich dude who is willing to give millions of $$ to the Gophers. but, my friends, it ain't a perfect world. not even close.
Miami is in the ACC so it has to be heavily dependent on booster money. He walked away from $1.2 million + bonuses.

We need to keep Danny Collins here at all costs. Give him the DC job plus whatever else he wants. He built up an unbelievable saftey room.
The fact is that most, if not all, young coordinators want to be head coaches. You have to move up the ranks to do that. Money of course makes a difference but if Heatherman does a really good job at Miami he won’t be there long either. If our coordinators are leaving that is fine. It means they are doing well.

In big time college football a lot of coordinators are getting fired, some are moving up and a very tiny percentage are doing well and content to keep doing that job at their current university.

Fleck keeps replacing and finding guys. Retention is the problem. Would be nice to find someone that really wants to be here and stay.

For me, it's more frustration that this athletic department is constantly behaving like it's flat broke. You get what you pay for.

He was going to make over $1 million next year, it's not like we were paying him peanuts. The coordinators we lost are now top 25 in pay in the entire country.

None of this matters if their replacements are just as good or better, and PJ has a pretty good track record there.

Corey did a really nice job this year. I also think he walked into a pretty good situation and parlayed into a great situation. We have a pretty good established group of position coaches, we also had a lot of returning talent and some really good players back from injuries. I think Danny Collins makes a lot of sense I've always viewed him as the Greg Harbaugh of the defense, think him and Greg both followed fleck from western Michigan and they both became position coaches moving up from quality control at the same time too. Seems like this was always going to be the move. Now that heatherman 1.2 mill is off the books plus an additional 600k coming in. Guessing we can bump up Winston and Monroe, probably add coordinator if something to their titles, hire another position coach and have more money to throw into analyst and QC roles as well.

I hope they open up the search to see who else is interested before just handing the job over to Collins, they do have a million plus available (although I doubt that Collins would get a bump into that pay range which could be a factor).

Hope Hetherman sticks it to WI one more time by getting the CB that WI won't let go of. I also hope he doesn't pillage our defense. We really have a chance to do something special next year and getting the right DC in will make a difference and/or supplementing who we have with excellent talent will. I am sure Fleck was aware of this (probably why he was so vulnerable when talking about his staff and not controlling if people leave).

the article was skewed data people only read the headlines not the fine details, his only guaranty and base salary is $400,000 per year. WITH POTENTIAL to make 1.2 million would he ever see 1.2m if he stayed to MN? Probably not. His most likely salary for the 2025 season would have been $657,500

I'm a bit confused by this move by Corey. It's not that I think he's the greatest DC of all time...Hell, I didn't even know who he was until we hired him last year.
Did he deserve a big bump in salary? It certainly, looks that way compared to other DCs in the B1G. Let's face it. He wasn't THAT great. Do we need to be in some kind of bidding war with this guy? We'll find a competent replacement and yes, he might not be an energetic guy that runs up and down sidelines like Corey. Maybe he sits up in the booth and analysis the game from there?
Results are all that count.

You probably need to pay Collins quite a bit more to keep him from following Corey, right?

If Collins didn’t follow Russo to Michigan St, why would he follow Hetherman to Miami? I would assume that Collins is more inclined to stick with PJ, unless Miami offers a massive raise.

Wut?

Just curious why some here are saying it's Collins next? It could well be, I have no idea.

Reason I ask is, the defensive coordinator hierarchy for 2024 was:

1) Heatherman - D Coordinator
2) Nick Monroe - D Co-Coordinator
3) Collins - D Passing Game Coordinator

My (possibly naive) thinking is that with the top guy gone, you bump 2 to 1, 3 to 2, and hire a new LB coach to be D Running Game Coord.

So, does Rutgers have any more guys who also coached at Maine that we can steal? :D

I am sorry. I like the program but to have so many coaches leave for lateral moves is a problem! I can see moving for upgrades not a good look for more money if you are building a good program.

NIL and the portal benefited B1G teams more than any other conference because we have the most money in our TV deal and relatively poor recruiting footprints. That being said, NIL and the portal benefited teams with huge individual boosters the most! Miami and Oregon seem to want to remind us of this on occasion. Don't worry, they don't just steal talent from us, they steal from everyone!

Miami hasn’t been particularly relevant in college football for two decades.

Had he worked a whole season he would have received all 600k in supplemental pay. There's a 200k retention bonus given in February so that's really the only money he would have potentially missed out on had he left in a different season. He actually could have made up to 1.8 million if he and the team had hit on all of the bonus goals stated in the contract.

Hetherman is a good coach, but PJ knows how to develop great coordinators. Next coach up.
