Minnesota’s Corey Hetherman new defensive coordinator at Miami

I wonder who takes over the linebackers. Would be interesting if they add a coach from a lower level. It would be nice to add someone who maybe could bring a player with him.

This logic would only work if you compare a house in Edina to a comparably upscale suburb of Miami. And my guess is Miami is considerably more expensive.
All depends on how close to the water you want to be.

Without doing any research, I wonder if there was a connection to a current coach on the Miami staff and/or the AD with Heatherman, ie coached together at a previous stop, or something?
I just find it amazing that we as a fanbase are upset to lose a guy when his name is only spelled correctly about 33% of the time 😂

Tells you how long he was here

I think stability is a good reason to stay. He’d have a chance to stay here for quite a while. Miami is a helmet school where a head coach can move on pretty quickly or be canned for missing the playoffs. Expectations are incredibly high at Miami. No doubt Heathermen is used to high expectations but don’t think he’s experienced a hook as quick as they come sometimes at schools like Miami, Alabama, and a few others.
Yeah. We definitely want guys who shy away from high expectations.

When considering coaching salaries you need to factor in Minnesota's top tax bracket of 9.87% versus no income tax in Florida. The top bracket starts a just over $330,000 so any salary paid in Florida is worth approximately 10% more.

I love the program too, but Miami is not a lateral move.
You’re right. It might be a step down.

Miami is going gangbusters in NIL but that may or may not be sustainable. It’s a relatively small private school in the ACC and likely is overpaying Hetherman to make the jump.

The Big Ten is on a rampage and seems to be one of the few conferences with an upward trajectory. As college football shifts gears to being run more and more like a pro sport, the Gophers could benefit greatly.

The issue here is 100% the small bonus pool for our assistant coaches. Fleck has deftly managed to fill replacements but if it’s me, I’m giving back some of my salary and increasing that pool. The fact that he makes more than his entire assistant pool is pretty nuts.

I mean in a perfect world our salary pool would be much larger, but Fleck’s salary is right around the middle of the big 10 and I think that’s deserved.

Miami’s NIL may not be sustainable and they are in the ACC, but as of now there’s no doubt they have more money to buy players and coaches.

As has been mentioned this could quickly be negated (and more) by the higher property costs in Miami.

I know you guys like to make literally everything about politics these days but there is a 0% chance that Corey Hetherman sat down and thought about his effective tax rate when taking the Miami job.

He sees a program throwing TONS of money at talent, he can insert himself in there and have 1 great defensive season and parlay that into a head coaching job.

Rossi was "the man" on defense. then the defense had issues in 2023, and suddenly when Rossi left for MSU, there were fans excited about a new guy with a more aggressive approach.

then Hetherman became "the man."

now he's gone.

prediction - as long as the defense stays relatively strong, the next guy will become "the man," too.

another prediction - Hetherman is not the last Gopher assistant who will leave for more money and potentially a more high-profile position. even with the salary pool bump for 2025, the Gophers are still on the low end of assistant coaching salaries in the B1G.

All coaches have high expectations as I said. I just think the leash gets shorter the higher up you get and the more you’re paid to do the job. Never said anyone should shy away from going for that either.

For those complaining that we don't spend enough on coordinators, which coordinator that left for more money are you dying to have back?

haha, silly. LIke saying Miami's climate didn't factor into his decision.
Absolutely the tax situation may have been considered

Maybe he can set up a low-tax entity in Dubai and have the University of Miami contract his services via a consultancy. But then he has to worry about permanent establishment if his only "customer" is Miami and he's tax resident in Florida.

For today, it’s just a better job period. It’s not even close.

I think in 5-10 years barring a Miami move to the SEC, the U will be a better job.
Everyone outside Minnesota will interpret your post about “the U” the other way!

In a hypothetical world where antitrust law were applied, the proposed ~20M salary cap did not exist and programs were free to spend any amount on player salaries what would the coach contracts naturally settle at? I’d guess about 1/3 to 1/5 of current?

Coaches are important and a very, very few have long track records of doing more with less, but getting top players takes precedence (and money).
