PiPress: Gophers football: How Tyrone Carter saved cousin Michael's career

"My cousin was always getting into trouble, and he wasn't playing to the best of his ability because he was getting into things outside of the football field," said Tyrone, a former Gophers All-American, who vividly remembers that call from Kill last November. "They were getting ready to kick him off the team. I said, 'Let me talk to him, and give him another chance for me.' So I got with Michael, and I went crazy on him."

Tyrone told Michael that he had disgraced the Carter name at Minnesota. Tyrone worked hard to get fans to wear his No. 22 jersey, to become the NCAA's all-time leader in tackles and to be named the best defensive back in college football in 1999.

"I told him, 'Ever since I had been there, people respected the name Carter, but now you come and you just made a bad name for our family. And I don't appreciate that.'â " Tyrone said. "And he felt that. He felt that, for sure."

Go Gophers!!

per Shooter:

The University of Minnesota football team (5-3) needs one more victory to become eligible for a bowl berth and could be Texas-bound if it gets it.

Whether the Gophers win one more game or two, it's a good guess they would end up in either the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas or the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

The ESPN-televised Meineke Car Care Bowl is Dec. 28 at Reliant Stadium in Houston. The Heart of Dallas Bowl, televised on ESPNU, is Jan. 1 at the Cotton Bowl.

The losses by the Michigan team (5-3) the Gophers host on Saturday were at Alabama, Notre Dame and Nebraska. Minnesota's losses were at Iowa, homecoming to Northwestern and at Wisconsin.

By the way, Michigan coach Brady Hoke was among the top considerations for the Gophers job that Jerry Kill ended up getting.

Former Gophers Rickey Foggie, Darrell Thompson, Bob McNamara, Tom Teigen and Scott Eckers will chat about their memories of playing against Michigan at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Goal Line Club Buttonhook Social at TCF Bank Stadium.

I like the move to get KJ more touches (kick offs and passes). He looks to be a playmaker.

Thought that was odd also. Only read one story about where Pat Nelson played at Wisconsin and think it said Fullback. Thought it was a good story overall. Sorry that's all you got out of it.

I hold Bennett at a level slightly above contempt, because he is thoroughly and completely unqualified for the position he holds. How he has maintained employment of any kind in the journalism field, let alone at an international and highly visible organization, is beyond human comprehension. It is so bad that not only do I blame ESPN for hiring him and allowing his continued employment, I blame him for having the hubris and the lack of common decency to not resign in shame. I have zero formal training or experience in journalism, and I know for certain that I could take over his job tomorrow and instantly do a much, much better job than he does. That simply should not be. My friend who writes a pro bono column for a small-town MN newspaper is a much better writer than Bennett, and his work gets read by probably 500 people a week.

ESPN says...

MICHIGAN at MINNESOTA

Brian Bennett: The Jug game should be closer than it has been in recent years, as Minnesota is better and will be at home. But Michigan still has a big edge, as long as Denard Robinson is healthy enough to play. All indications are that he'll be fine, and that means trouble for the Gophers' defense. Robinson goes for the Jug-ular with 200 rushing yards, and the Wolverines pump the breaks on the Philip Nelson hype with a strong defensive performance. ... Michigan 31, Minnesota 17

Adam Rittenberg: You truly are the pun-isher, Bennett. This is a dangerous game for Michigan as it visits a Minnesota team playing with renewed confidence under Nelson. The Gophers jump ahead early behind a Nelson touchdown run, but Michigan eventually finds its bearings and attacks a defense that has been vulnerable to the ground game. Robinson racks up 110 yards and two scores, and Fitz Toussaint adds a key second-half rushing touchdown. Nelson starts strong, but commits a second-half turnover as Michigan escapes with the Jug. ... Michigan 24, Minnesota 16

And the post above shows Bennett doesn't know the difference between break and brake.

2. Michigan at Minnesota | Full scoreboard & TV info

Why you should watch: It’s the battle for the Little Brown Jug, a trophy that the Golden Gophers have won just twice (1986 and 2005) in the last 30 years. Minnesota needs one more victory to attain bowl eligibility for the first time since 2009. The Wolverines can’t afford another misstep if they want to stay in the Legends Division hunt after losing at Nebraska last week.

Player on the spot: Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson. How healthy is that right elbow that got dinged last Saturday night in a 23-9 loss at Nebraska? Robinson left the game in the second quarter and never returned. And the Wolverines’ offense sunk into a deepening abyss that has seen Michigan fail to score a touchdown in the last two games. Robinson must show he can pass the ball at Minnesota, as the offense is getting too predictable.

Key matchup: Minnesota QB Philip Nelson vs. Michigan defense. The true freshman signal-caller has captured the imagination of the Gopher Nation with his effort last week in a 44-28 win vs. Purdue. Nelson hit 15-of-22 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns in just his second start. But he will face his sternest test yet vs. a Wolverine defense that is No. 2 in the Big Ten (291.0 ypg).

Key number: 12, average points per game that Michigan is allowing in its last six contests. The Wolverines also are No. 1 in the nation in pass defense (145.2 ypg).

Key note: Michigan hasn’t scored a touchdown since the fourth quarter vs. Illinois on Oct. 13. Two games (Michigan State and Nebraska) have passed since.

@GopherFootball: Former Gopher @BenUtecht will sing the National Anthem prior to Saturday's game against Michigan
