CBS: Michigan Wolverines at Minnesota Golden Gophers: Preview, prediction, TV info

The game comes down to: Can Robinson stay healthy? The dynamic player has had numerous health issues this season as he has become incredibly turnover prone. The Minnesota defense is far from dominant but is ranked seventh in the country in pass defense (160 yards per game) and 56th in sacks (2.0 per game). If Robinson falters, a mediocre Michigan offense could have difficulty moving the ball.

Prediction: Michigan 23, Minnesota 17

PiPress: Gophers football: Philip Nelson hopes to duplicate Rickey Foggie's 4-year run at quarterback

"He has size, the ability to run, and he's a much more polished passer than I was as a freshman," Foggie said Tuesday, Oct. 30. "That's why he's exciting to watch: because this guy can throw the football. I was actually down in Madison and watched his first game. He made some throws down there. So it didn't surprise me what he did against Purdue."

Sansevere's Huddle: Guess which team - Vikings or Gophers - has the better quarterback

There is a lot of excitement about Gophers true freshman Philip Nelson, who lit up Purdue with his passing. Unfortunately for Vikings fans, the excitement over Christian Ponder has receded over the past few weeks. Pioneer Press reporter Marcus Fuller, sports editor Mike Bass, and TwinCities.com sports web producer Kevin Cusick join Pioneer Press sports columnist Bob Sansevere in a lively discussion about the quarterbacks.

As of right now there is way more excitement for Nelson. In 3 1/2 years we will know which team has the better QB.

Marcus blog: Gophers football: Foggie couldn’t do it until his JR year. So can Nelson beat Michigan as a frosh?

“That’s kind of what we’ve been waiting on, to get those glory days back,” Foggie said of the fan base and alumni. “It was a great victory against Purdue. Hopefully, we can get another one against Michigan.”

STrib: Gophers QB connects with linemen as well as receivers

"It's great. He's a kid that obviously made an impression on the O-linemen as a group," Limegrover said. "There was already a good connection there. Now he's in that huddle, they all respect him and feel good with him at the helm."

Latest forecast is a high of 40 with a 40% chance of rain.

Just wondering which team a bad weather scenario favors. It seems like in my selective memory that the Gophers have played pretty well the last few years in their cold weather games. Hopefully it's not raining so much it affects our new-found passing game.

RE Rain: I've often heard a number of theories. The one I go with is that rain, surprisngly, can slightly favor a passing team (*as long as the ball can stay dry). Receivers know where they're going on routes, so if they can keep their feet, they can get open with the DB's having to react on a wet field. Plus, pass rushing slows down with the wet field. Like I said, this is one of many theories....others say just the opposite & RUN RUN RUN!

I've always thought of WIND as more of a factor than rain, cold or snow. I think it would be an interesting question to ask the coaches what their opinion is.

National Weather Service has just a slight chance of rain on Saturday with very little wind. I would think bad weather would help Michigan as their passing game is not very good.

41 questions (or points addressed in bold in the presser)

1 about Nelson
1 on Minnesota as a team, in general
1 kind of about Minnesota (has he ever played at our outdoor stadium)
2 about Jerry Kill

I don't think they're taking us seriously.

Time to jump up and bite 'em in the ass.

When the kickoff is below 44 at TCF the Gophers are undefeated. Per MV.

Nope, hope he's good enough to head for the NFL after his Junior year!

BTN says...

Michigan (5-3, 3-1) at Minnesota (5-3, 1-3) - noon ET, BTN/BTN2Go
Tom’s pick: Michigan, 29-28 – The Wolverines’ superior defense will be the difference in what will be a back-and-forth battle for the Little Brown Jug. Oh, and don’t worry about Denard’s elbow. He won’t need it much, as he’ll have a big day running the ball (150? 200 yards?).
Brent’s pick: Michigan, 37-20 – Healthy wing or not, Minnesota is the kind of team Denard Robinson torches with eye-popping statistical days. He’ll have a big day on the ground and Michigan’s defense should give Philip Nelson a wake-up call.

Kill: It's up to me to fix attendance problem

"If we continue to win, that place will be packed out and we'll have to build on to it," Kill said at his weekly news conference. "If you don't win, that's the way it is. ... It's our job. It's not our fans -- I'm not going to blame anybody. We've got to put a good product out there. That's what I was hired to do a year and a half ago, and that's what we'll do."

Precocious Nelson has Gopher on the Move

ESPN Big Ten Blog

Nelson's father, Pat, was a quarterback at Wisconsin in the 1970s. Philip was Minnesota's Mr. Football out of Mankato West High school, where he set state passing records and learned how to command a no-huddle offense. Nelson enrolled at Minnesota last spring to get a jump on his college career.

"You could see that development start right away, almost literally the first day he came to campus," Limegrover said. "By the time he got to fall camp, it wasn't like he was a kid showing up for the first time. He already kind of had a veteran presence about him when we started."

So why did it take until Week 6 for the Gophers to play Nelson? Well, they had Gray, who came on strong at the end of last season and who is a dangerous dual threat. Nelson had a hamstring injury in fall camp that set him back a little bit. And remember, Minnesota started 4-0.

There wasn't a sense that we had to push the urgency button," Kill said. "You wish you had a crystal ball to make all the predictions of what has happened the last four or five weeks, but we don't. ... I think the best thing about Philip is that he's learned a lot through this process the whole time."

Saw this glaring and enormous error in the first sentence. Before clicking on the link, assumed it was Bennett. Clicked on link, saw byline. Whaddya know.

Thought that was odd also. Only read one story about where Pat Nelson played at Wisconsin and think it said Fullback. Thought it was a good story overall. Sorry that's all you got out of it.
