Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh reportedly interviewing with the Vikings

There are a lot of teams who stock top tier talent for years and are still bad - Jacksonville, Detroit, NY Jets, etc. Coaches aren't walking into those situations and going to three straight NFC Championship games and 1 Super Bowl in their first 3 seasons as HC.

Harbaugh not having a top 10 offense has more to do with having Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick as his QBs, than his coaching ability, and they still won at a high level.

My point isn’t that Harbaugh is a bad coach, he’s a good coach that gave a strong core group the bump they needed with the Niners. Acting as if he’s some coaching whiz when it’s taken him 7 years to beat Ohio State and win the conference is hilarious however. In that time, he’s struggled to develop a QB which has been the Vikings biggest issue for decades.

Are we that excited about a guy that’s been outcoached by Paul Chryst, Mel Tucker and James Franklin?

I'd approve of this. He's definitely a goofball but I think the guy can win in Minnesota and he does a pretty good job with the QB's (Smith/Kaepernick/Luck/McNamara etc.) . Might have to worry about him restarting Kaepernicks career :censored:
I don't think he liked Kap as a QB he benched him.

I'm not in favor of this.

NOT because I think Harbaugh is a bad coach.

BUT because I think Harbaugh is a short-term solution. 3 or 4 years and he winds up leaving while burning bridges behind him.

The Vikings have been all about short-term solutions for 20+ years - mostly at the QB position.

So now, the Vikes hire a young brain wizard GM. People think, "wow, a fresh new approach for the franchise."

if the GM's 1st move is to hire a short-term, stop-gap solution at HC, that tells me that the Wilfs are running the show, and have told the new GM "no rebuild. Do whatever you have to to win as many games as possible next year."

I would rather go with a young coach, even if it means a couple of bad seasons, IF the franchise is put on a path for long-term success.
He's been at Michigan 7 years.

Average tenure of an NFL head coach is 3.2 years.

Worrying he might be successful but leave in 3-4 years is being scared of success.

I think we should hire someone nice that everyone likes that sticks around 5 years. Maybe Leslie Frazier

Regardless, I'm sorry to say, but I'm afraid we may have to deal with some PJ to Michigan rumors coming shortly .... :(

That's a ridiculous comparison. The NFL is very different from college, and recruiting has become significantly more difficult over the last two years.

Bill Belichick was out-coached by Brian Flores 3 of the last 4 times they played, and he also lost to Romeo Crennel, and Vic Fangio over the last two seasons. By that logic we shouldn't consider Belichick for HC if he was available.

We can't get any worse on the next Vikings head coach hire than what has transpired in the last few coaching changes.

What is different about this is that the Wilfs are putting some serious money and support behind the new GM. If the Vikings are aligned top to bottom with this new collaborative GM style with a flair for details, I think the Vikings have a bright future after they take care of Cousins and the salary cap issues. There will be some pain along the way. Don't expect an immediate turnaround.

If Kwesi Adofo-Mensah (KAM) is who everyone says he is, he maybe can bring us a Super Bowl title and end one of the longest Super Bowl win-less draughts.

If Harbaugh leaves Michigan, I don't know if the Gophers will lose PJ Fleck. He is comfortable here, but that said ambition drives people. Recruiting is tough, but is improving. If PJ Fleck can win the Big Ten title in the coming seasons, the recruiting rankings will rise IMHO. Maybe, if that happens he knows his legacy is secured here.

I don't think Harbaugh goes public about NFL interviews if he had any intention of staying at Michigan.
My guess is MN was a stepping stone to Miami.

Who would you get excited about?
I really don't have a favorite. The stories that I am reading, point out that he has trouble with his bosses all the time. We don't need any more of that in my opinion.

They seemed to be okay with him at Michigan, Stanford, and San Diego

Exactly my point, they were loaded with top tier talent because they had been bad for so long. Look at the loaded defense they had from day 1, he's not walking into that situation here. They'd gone 8-8 two years prior to Harbaugh pretty much with the same group. As much as anything, a new voice that happened to be a good coach was always going to get the best out of that team. Of course they fell back to 8-8 before Harbaugh was let go when the team and higher ups grew tired of him.

Harbaugh never had a top 10 offense in his time with the Niners and he has not shown to be an innovative offensive mind either. A top 5 defense carried those teams.
They got even worse after he left, falling to 5-11 then 2-14 firing 2 more Head Coaches. Doesn't seem like Harbaugh was the problem. His last year they were 8-8, not a trainwreck.

First 3 years he made it to the Playoffs and advanced at least to the NFC Title game each time. 5-3 overall in the Postseason. I think that is as many Wins as the Vikings have had this century (or 1 less if you count 1999 season, which they did win a Wild Card game in early 2000).

I would be good with the hire.

Im excited about a guy whos taken his team to the Superbowl. Vikings havent done that in my lifetime

It hurts to watch them lose Super Bowls. I have watched 3 of those and the continued losing finally broke me in 1998 when they lost to Atlanta. Now I don't care what the Vikings do but I still follow the Gophers and have season tickets. The NFL is just taking money from fans.

Which PJ? The real PJ, or the imposter with the glasses? You know there are two of them now...?
Non-glasses PJ hasn't shown up for a while. It is possible that the clone took over. I mean think about it, the real Fleck had many different outfits yet this one looks similar in every picture.

Maybe we should give Dan Quinn or Ron Rivera a ring then? What I don’t understand is why people are doing backflips for Harbaugh when Doug Pederson pretty much did the same job more recently but actually won the Super Bowl. All while making Carson Wentz look like an MVP candidate the year prior.

Personally I like the idea of Ryans, Morris or O’Connell. The Vikings are headed for a rebuild either way despite how poor the division is, let a coach grow with the team.

Last I knew, he was having issues with his AD due to the pay cut he took at Michigan. On another note, this guy's brother has something he doesn't have. A super bowl ring. Maybe he could be a part of that. That would be a good thing.

They literally have giant extension sitting on the table for him. Not sure how you could say he has a problem at Michigan

You do have to remember they gave him a big pay cut a year ago. He got into a heated discussion with his AD about that and strained their relationship. Would they do that again?
