Don't know if anyone has said this yet, but my friend just texted me that the memphis head coach was at the howard pulley league game tonight watching trevor mbakwe. Since he travelled all the way up here to watch a summer league game, do you all assume that it's a done deal? If so, losing him will be another huge blow to the program! What is going on with our gophers?!?!?!?

Pastner is in Minneapolis, but not at HP...he is at the AAU tournament. It is my understanding that college coaches can't attend leagues like HP, otherwise the Gopher coaches would have a coach there every night, as would most regional colleges who have players in the league (I could be wrong about that rule, but that is my understanding).

Go Gophers!!

Pastner, though memphis fans wouldn't admit it and would crucify me for saying it, is a lot like Mr. Calipari.

That wouldn't stop Pastner. He cares diddly-squat about NCAA rules. He coaches MEMPHIS.

don't know about all of that, but my bud says he knows what pastner looks like and is positive that he was at the game tonight watching. I don't have any reason to lie just thought people would want to hear the information.......maybe someone that was also there can confirm this, but he is positive that it was pastner in the gym.

In case you missed it, Mbakwe faces a felony assault charge. Innocent until proven guilty but very few schools would allow a player charged with a felony to play until the charge was resolved.

Like I said, he coaches MEMPHIS. Before that, he coached at Arizona. Slipping around NCAA rules was commonplace at both schools for a LONG time.

You are correct, he was there. Trevor confirmed it. You're not a liar - thanks for posting!

Wow, that is a blatant violation of NCAA rules. I hope someone took a picture.

The league is NCAA certified - I think he was just fine being there (although coaches couldn't be there the first couple of weeks).

He was out at Jefferson today. As were a number of coaches, including a one that kept asking people where a good tanning salon is.

So when can we file tampering charges? :)

All I know is the Gopher coaches couldn't attend HP all season - I would give Coach Mo updates on how the guys would play when Monson was the coach. I wonder if it's different because he's a recruit, and not a current player. Coaches have limited time with their players, but if he's allowed to recruit at the Best Buy tourney, this is just a different location one of his recruits is at - not any of his current players.

Two tweets from Marcus on this thread:

"A fan on GopherHole message board said that Memphis coach Josh Pastner watched Trevor Mbakwe at Pulley league tonight. Heard similar rumor."

"First off, college coaches aren't allowed to watch pro-am games. Second, I was surprised Mbakwe's playing so quick after dislocated finger."

Go Gophers!!

On sports huddle show - maturi did say that he would probably change his policy towards Trevor and allow him to play if the court proceedings were again delayed!

Hi! Memphis fan here.

I'm unsure of what exactly this league is that Mbakwe was playing in tonight, but if it's anything like Memphis' Bluff City Classic (in which Memphis players are competing to stay sharp), then the reason Minnesota's coaches aren't allowed to attend is because a current player (Mbakwe) is playing in it. Coach Pastner isn't allowed to attend the BCC because essentially our entire team is playing in it.

I don't know the rules, but logic would lead me to believe that coaches would be able to attend other Pro-am leagues like this, as long as none of their signed players are competing in it. I don't know if that's accurate, but that's the assumption I'm using.

Coach Pastner is a straight-laced guy; say all you want about him being "Calipari's apprentice" or whatever, but he's nothing like him. Calipari decimated our program and left us on probation. Coach Pastner has been a breath of fresh air and constantly reiterates his urge to do things by the book. This is his first college HC job, and since we're on probation because of Cal, I sincerely doubt he would do anything to jeopardize his job.

Just thought I'd pop in here and try to settle a few points. Good luck next season, and go Tigers!

Marcus appears to be wrong -- but, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I think* a league being certified does not mean that D1 coaches can check the games out during the 'appropriate' times... rather the league needs an event (as opposed to 'league') certification in order for a coach to attend... so, there are in fact Pro Am leagues that have certain dates for which the 'event' is certified and can be attended by a coach...

Certified Summer 2010 Events

I don't know how often the link above is updated (edit: June 28 was the last update, so not very updated.. or there just have been no changes.. both possible), but I don't see the HP/JM league with any 'event dates'... however, as an example, you look at the Milwaukee Pro Am.. there are three specific days for which there is an event certification (there is also a league certification, for which there are many more dates)...

It could be the case that the league at the SAL has a couple of days that are event certified... or maybe the young coach messed up. Either way, I'm not too freaked out about it... we should let it go... although on the surface it appears that there is no event certification.

Pastner did admit that he attended the game, he claims that he had many conversations with his compliance officer and they determined that because it is a sanctioned event, just like the Pump Tourney, that it is ok for coaches to go during the open evaluation period in July when coaches are allowed on the road. It is off limits any other time of the year. He has alos told several people that if trevor gets the Waiver, they will go after him and will get him. the big question will be if Minnesota will go through with the threats of tampering against Memphis, which would be a slam dunk case as Memphis has been calling him since December.

.. then the reason Minnesota's coaches aren't allowed to attend is because a current player (Mbakwe) is playing in it. Coach Pastner isn't allowed to attend the BCC because essentially our entire team is playing in it.

You start off strong, but I'm not sure you're settling any points -- it sounds like you're simply guessing here.. maybe we've got an 'expert' who can explain it clearly.. in the case of the league you're referring to, per the NCAA website (which again may be outdated and may not agree with reality) it says the certified LEAGUE dates are June 15 to August 12 (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays) and the certified EVENT dates are July 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 22, 27, 28 and 29.. those dates would be consistent with the Evaluation Periods per the men's basketball recruiting calendar.

In other words, I think what you made up is not correct, but I also think your coach is likely fine being at HP... but, wonder about the website not being updated.

Two things:

1. The rule about the Gophers coaches not being able to go to the Pro-Am league has to do with it turning into offseason coaching. It's the same reason why coaches can't watch unofficial scrimmages in the spring and summer. It is possible that Pastner could be there and not be in violation. I don't know one way or the other.

2. I also think that painting Pastner with a broad brush about being a cheater because he happens to coach Memphis is a little harsh and, frankly, unfair. A certain Big Ten team in Minneapolis doesn't exactly have the greatest track record with the NCAA and if that doesn't reflect on coaches here, then Memphis' past shouldn't reflect on Pastner.

Yeah, most of it was an educated guess.

Yeah, most of it was an educated guess. Do any of you know what team Mbakwe was playing on in the HP league? I know Coach Pastner was at a specific game at the AAU tourney today, and I wanted to see if they maybe happened at the same time. Just a thought.

Um... the E.C. Playaz if that means anything to you. Pastner was certainly in Bloomington, MN late afternoon for a 3:50 game... the HP League's games are at night in St. Paul, about 15 miles away.

Thank you. It's a message board and I guess its really easy to say negative things. Pastner is for real. No need to blast him and our program. Cal, well, I can't defend. We had him and we were winning, holding our breath the whole while. With that kind of success I wonder what some of your fans would have closed their eyes to. Anyway, he's gone and we were blessed to get Pastner. Read his bio. Clean living, hard working, high morales no BS kind of guy. Yes, I know you are saying of course I would say that. Research him and you may change your outlook.
Someone is going to get Mbakwe. I don't wish [and I believe no one else does] your program any ill will. It would be great if things had worked out for him. I feel for Tubby, I have always thought he is a class act.If you were somehow able to salvage him, more power to you. The Gopher posters that have come to Memphis Roar have been classy and knowledgeable. So cut us some slack.
Thank you anoymous.

On sports huddle show - maturi did say that he would probably change his policy towards Trevor and allow him to play if the court proceedings were again delayed!

That is the best Trevor information that I have received in months. Although his use of the adverb "probably" is disconcerting. If Trevor hasn't shown all of us that his character is worthy of support, I don't believe that there is anything that would satisfy those who chose to sit in judgement. Almost all of whom don't have all the facts on which to base a valid judgement.

If Maturi is going to allow Trevor to play at the start of the season unless he is found guilty (whenever the trial is), then he owes it to all concerned to say so NOW and to show Trevor that the school is behind and for him. Maybe this has been decided and made clear to TM. If it hasn't, then IMO Maturi is being a jerk of bureaucratic proportions.

He was sitting front row for the memphis/St Louis game at 8:30.

So he was missing the DC Assault, MN PNR game just a couple hundred yards away? THAT is criminal.

BTW - any thoughts JG on that game (the mem magic/st. gf)? I only stopped over for a few minutes.. the sight of II, II's coach made me leave quickly.. plus, it was more of a party atmosphere and more physical over at court 1.. BJ Young is one little dude and I don't advise anyone do a google search on him at work.. Memphis Magic has a few outstanding looking kids...

I think I'll have to make a return trip to Jefferson tomorrow at noon just to see more of Quinn Cook.

All i'm saying is, at some point we need to quit catching bad breaks while teams like memphis go to final fours, get them stripped, change coaches, and all of the sudden get recruits left and right. We need some of that luck after this year.

Maturi can't say NOW because his rethink is contingent upon yet another postponement of trial date.
