Maryland transfer QB Danny O'Brien a Stinkin' Badger; UPDATED 6/11: O'Brien leaves UW

Dpodoll.....great post, as always. You remain a personal favorite of mine around here! I love talking UW football with you. I'll address just one point of your lengthy post.

If I don't understand "big boy football" because I'm a Gopher fan, you don't understand it as a Becky fan either. Wisconsin is not "big boy football" as much as you'd like it to be and like to pretend that it is.

I guess we have different definitions of "big boy football." Winning the Big Ten is pretty "big boy" to me. I have to cut you some slack though....you most certainly wouldn't know in your lifetime what that's like.

No....I'm here to talk Badger football, like the rest of you are!

Go back over to Beckyville with the rest of the delusional Becky fans. Becky football is legend in its own mind. Your band struts around like a bunch of monkey's, and they couldn't hit a cord if they depended on it. Your stadium, if you call it that, is a giant erector set that should be salvaged. Madison, other than a football weekend, makes insurance seminars seem like a happening. I'll put this in kindergarten verbage so it is simple for you to understand. "Put an egg in your shoe and beat it"

Epic meltdown, Rupie!!!! Hilarious!

What you don't understand is that this is a great place to talk Badger football and we are entertaining. #brokenrecord.

Also, sconnie fans are joking themselves if they think this won't affect QB recruiting. It will be used and thrown around by other coaches recruiting against sconnie, it likely will be effective unless the recruit is local.

I think this argument assumes that a recruit isn't smart enough to understand the specifics of the situation.

What do you think would be easier to explain to a recruit:
A) We had to bring in a transfer to fill an open scholarship because we had only 1 healthy scholarship QB.
B) We had to bring in a transfer shooting guard and not renew another guy's scholarship because we didn't like our current shooting guards.

What you don't understand is that this is a great place to talk Badger football and we are entertaining. #brokenrecord.
And that's the only reason he's here. It's not to brag and boast about the results of football games that he played no part in. It's not a lie if you truly believe it.

What I find entertaining is the fact that badger fan's come on our board to talk smack and compare themselves to OSU and Michigan. Why do they waste their time with us?? Shouldn't they be on the "big boy" teams' boards to trade barbs. If they were truly on the top on the conference the way they believe themselves to be, they wouldn't waste their time with little ol' us.

No, I most certainly did not forget Leo Musso, who would be a high end recruit in your class. You did forget Leo's offer from Pittsburgh. He was a kid Wisconsin wanted to sneak in as a preferred walk-on....like Jared Abbrederis, the top WR returning in the Big Ten, and Ricky Wagner, one of the top tackles in college football this coming season. Leo was given an offer from Pittsburgh when Chryst left for there.....probably because he knew they were trying to sneak Leo through - so Wisconsin had to offer him or see him leave for Pittsburgh. In addition to that, I was talking about Running Backs. While Leo played RB in HS, he was recruited as an athlete and will most likely see the field in other places. His HS teammate, Jack Russell is a preferred walk-on who Pitt also offered, but he turned down Pitt. What can I say...the kid likes winning!

But in order to back up my claim that Leo Musso would be a high end recruit for Minnesota, I found this assembled list of actual reported offers for Minnesota commits from Scout and Rivals. A class of 27 with only SEVEN (if you count the guy with a Syracuse offer) getting BCS offers is probably a frustration. Accounting for the fact that Phil Nelson was a early commit, and assuming he'd have drawn some more interest, one could conclude that Leo would have been a top 9 recruit for you guys with his UW and Pitt offers!

The math program in Madison must be even worse than usual, you counted your own list wrong. So let me get this right, you're going to tell us that Musso had an offer from Pitt, even though it's not reported on Rivals, and then use the offer lists from Rivals to tell us how many offers the Gopher recruits had? Let that sink in for a while and try and see the failed logic you've just used. I could sit here and list off internet rumors of who else offered potential recruits, but I'm obviously not as bored as you are.

BinOV, I'd encourage you to find something in life worth living for. Any fan from another team who is posting on a Gopher website in March and went to all the trouble you did listing every one of our 28 recruits really needs some help.

Johnny....when I assembled the Gopher list, I used both SCOUT and RIVALS. Please feel free to inform me of any players you didn't beat MAC and 1-AA teams for that I missed.

As for Musso and his Pitt offer, his Scout profile is here listing his Pitt offer:

http://wisconsin.scout.com/a.z?s=193&p=8&c=1&nid=5456040

Both the Milwaukee and Madison papers reported Pitt's interest in him only to have Wisconsin increase his walk on offer to a scholarship.

But either way, he's a wet dream to your recruiting class. I guess you can take the coach out of the MAC but you can't take the MAC out of the coach.

To the mods:
I think this would be a solid investment for these boards

I already addressed it (earlier in this thread, I believe), but the difference is that a JuCo player is being recruited to fill depth and potentially start, just like any freshman recruit (with the implicit understanding that the JuCo is more likely to start right away/earlier given their higher level of growth, maturation, and playing experience). A graduate transfer is most likely a stud, or at the very least a reliable, experienced starter, who is all but given the starting job. If he weren't guaranteed to start, he would go someplace else where he could. The JuCo recruiting process is just like the HS process, with wooing, official visits, phone calls, weighing pros and cons, etc. The grad transfer recruiting process is basically a phone call - Coach: "Hey, we need a [insert position here]. You'll start and play every snap." Player: "Where do I sign?"

I'm not just saying that it's a terrible rule because it's the Vadgers who're involved. I thought the Masoli transfer was ridiculous as well, as I do in all of these circumstances.

That's a fair argument some of the time but keep in mind that Cam Newton and OJ Simpson were JUCO's. I think it's more likely that most JUCO's just aren't as good - its not some moral decision to protect returning players by the JUCO recruiting coach.

Yet he didn't have a Minnesota offer...

Apparently he isn't even a MAC coach's wet dream.

Cam Newton was a "Juco" via the Florida Gators and knew this was the fast ticket to a sweet starting job then NFL.

Wisconsin

Attention freshmen and sophomores! Wisconsin is looking for an experienced quarterback for the 2014 college football season. Although Danny O’Brien will be our quarterback for 2012 and 2013, we will have a vacant slot open as soon as he graduates. This individual must be between the ages of 21 and 65, although no experience in our “system” is required. Interested? Meet head football coach Bret Bielema at the Madison Steak and Shake at approximately 2:37 a.m. on Friday for more info!

there is no Steak and Shake in Madison. Maybe the empty Sonic on Uni.

The University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Football Team is searching for a quality Kicker/Punter who is currently a full-time student at the University of Minnesota. Potential qualified Kickers/Punters could earn an athletic scholarship and compete at the Big 10 level.

Please contact Vic Adamle at 612/624-6004 by Tuesday, April 15th for tryout information.

Please let this thread die so the BADger scum will go away.

Winning programs recruit good players each year. Players that have confidence in themselves to come in and compete. It's called depth. Big boy football.

Vindication for Badger in Ohio Valley? Or has he just been unmasked as new UW offensive coordinator Matt Canada?

“I think they’ve handled it great,” he said. “We’ve got really smart players at Wisconsin. I think that’s the great thing we have. We’ve got very good players, but they’re very smart. We only have two quarterbacks who can play right now. We’re playing big-boy football and things happen, so we have to have depth at that position. They understand that, and they’re competitors. Nobody’s going to turn it down.”

local? says hes from NC... did I miss something? and he plays for the badgers, all ties are severed if he is local, I hope he has a terrible season on an even worse team!

Yeah, but he was born in Minnesota. For some reason, there's a significant portion of the population that thinks you're obligated to cheer for someone if you share some sort of common background. That's why my music collection is packed to the rafters with crappy Soul Asylum and Jayhawks CDs and I never, ever miss a Josh Hartnett movie.

Jessica Biel was born in Ely. I guess I'd watch her prance around in a movie or two.

CBS: Former Badgers QB Danny O'Brien leaving program

Former Wisconsin quarterback Danny O'Brien, who transferred to Madison before the start of last season, is leaving the program, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel confirmed.

O'Brien transferred from Maryland after two successful seasons in the ACC and was buried on the Badgers depth chart after an un-impactful season in the Big Ten last year.
