Per the U:

The Gopher men's basketball team will hold a Maroon and Gold Open Scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 2 or 2:30 p.m., four hours before the start of the Gopher Homecoming Football game vs. Purdue. Game time for the football game is slated for either 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public as a "first glance" opportunity for fans attending the football game to check out the Gophers and head coach Niko Medved. Following the one-hour scrimmage, the Golden Gophers will be signing autographs for fans in attendance.

Go Gophers!!

Dont know if they've done those in the past but, good thing to do.
IDK if they have done them in recent years (if they did, I didn't know about it) but back in the day it was an annual thing. Like it! Good for players to play in front of people, put the uniforms on...get some first time jitters out of the way. Establish or experiment a pre game routine. All good!
Great opportunity for fans!

They always used to! Prime obviously under Clem, it was Midnight Madness, then Tubby still pulled good crowds as Tubby's Tipoff, Pitino did a few of the scrimmages, and the attendance wasn't great, but then they just stopped having them. It was a huge miss (just like stopping the football spring game) - this is a place where you can bring in new fans, kids get autographs, you can make a Gopher fan for life. Live sporting events are very expensive, so it's great to have such a free and inclusive event for fans and prospective fans!

They have. When the kid from Germany was a freshman. I remember standing in the autograph line and trying out my high school german on him. He was very patient.

I remember going to an open scrimmage after the ‘81 Minnesota-Wisconsin game—which turned out be the last football game played at Memorial Stadium. The Gophers had ten men on the field when the Badgers scored the winning touchdown. An agitated but slightly bemused Julie Perlt announced: “Welcome to this afternoon’s inter squad scrimmage: a game which Minnesota cannot lose.”

And, even if you don't go you feel more of a connection to the program. They are reaching out to you...inviting you to join them for free. You root for them to be successful with a closer bond.

For instance, Jerry Kill emphasized open practices. I went to several of the many chances in a season he offered. Not one but several opportunities....7 maybe? And then you logged in upon arrival and Jerry mailed you a letter thanking you for attending. Truly made you feel connected, wanted, part of the program.

Way to go Niko!

Couldn't agree with this more!!!!

Coach said not to take anything away, but nice to see Willis and Tyson sounding legit.

Surprising takeaway in the article. Will be interesting how this actually plays out. - “Five. The Bigs. Robert Vaihola played the five and he is clearly the top option for that position right now. His knowledge and strength are the best that Minnesota have. Grayson Grove started opposite of Vaihola while Nehemiah Turner came in the game off the bench. Vahiola and Turner are the strength while Grove is more of the pick and pop five. After the scrimmage Niko Medved said that they may use Crocker-Johnson at the position sometimes as well but it seems like based on this today (minutes wise and who started) that Vaihola will be the first five and Grove the second five.”

What is this “movement” thing we’re seeing here? I didn’t know that was allowed.

Why is the orange sphere going to several different players on a possession? I don't understand. Isn't the person that brings it cross court supposed to hold onto it for 28 seconds before doing something?

Five takeaways from Gophers men’s basketball scrimmage

Initial scorers

Guard Chansey Willis, a transfer from Western Michigan, and forward Cade Tyson, a transfer from North Carolina, showed some scoring touch in the two eight-minute “games.”

Willis, who is listed at 6 feet 2, was able to finish at the rim and from 3-point range. One of the biggest highlights was his steal, a reverse lay-up in transition, plus a foul.

“Chansey can get in the lane, Isaac (Asuma) can get in the lane,” Medved said. “We do have some guys with some quickness who can create, and we’ve seen that from (Chansey) every day. He is going to be a player, I think, Gopher fans will like.”

Tyson had a finish amid traffic in the paint and a trey with Jaylen Crocker-Johnson’s hand in his face.

Tyson also got a chunk of his points at the free-throw line, which was an area where the Gophers struggled mightily during the Ben Johnson era.

Go Gophers!!
