Per the U:

The Gopher men's basketball team will hold a Maroon and Gold Open Scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 2 or 2:30 p.m., four hours before the start of the Gopher Homecoming Football game vs. Purdue. Game time for the football game is slated for either 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public as a "first glance" opportunity for fans attending the football game to check out the Gophers and head coach Niko Medved. Following the one-hour scrimmage, the Golden Gophers will be signing autographs for fans in attendance.

Go Gophers!!

Dont know if they've done those in the past but, good thing to do.
IDK if they have done them in recent years (if they did, I didn't know about it) but back in the day it was an annual thing. Like it! Good for players to play in front of people, put the uniforms on...get some first time jitters out of the way. Establish or experiment a pre game routine. All good!
Great opportunity for fans!

They always used to! Prime obviously under Clem, it was Midnight Madness, then Tubby still pulled good crowds as Tubby's Tipoff, Pitino did a few of the scrimmages, and the attendance wasn't great, but then they just stopped having them. It was a huge miss (just like stopping the football spring game) - this is a place where you can bring in new fans, kids get autographs, you can make a Gopher fan for life. Live sporting events are very expensive, so it's great to have such a free and inclusive event for fans and prospective fans!
