Leading Coach Options

The poster said he had "inside information" on a new coach. That IS a joke. There is no way that his list is close to reality. Watch what Maturi said about a "Minnesota-Like"coach. The new coach will
1. want the job badly
2. fit the Minnesota mold or have direct connections
And I do have some connections. You can take the last two points I made to the bank.

Hate to break it to you there buddy but GopherLady is, in fact, a lady. On top of that, she's proven to be a reliable source of information for a long time on this board. You on the other hand have a established a reputation as being, well, short-sighted. Therefore, folks are going to roll with her and her sources MUCH more than with you and your "connections."

Sorry, that's just the way it goes.

Your list is a joke...
Tuberville just took the Tech job..why would he bail out
Leach has issues, he's a jerk for the admin to work with..no way on him
And anyone who hires little Stoops deserves him. He's a total rear end from everything I've seen.
And NONE of these has any Minnesota connections-a primary prereq. according to Maturi.
Sorry, your insider is on the outside.

Don't worry, Mrs. Trestman, I am sure Marc will get an interview too.

Watch and wait...my comments will hold up.

You're saying nothing and revealing less.

The new coach will
1. want the job badly

What does that even mean? "Fit the Minnesota mold." Talk about platitudes.

Hey everyone - I have breaking news! The next Gophers coach will be a carbon-based life form who breathes oxygen and emits carbon dioxide! My comments will hold up!

Did someone start happy hour without me.

Mold/Culture....he might be in the right building, but not the top floor.

Let me explain this again...the new coach will be:
1. Former Gopher asst coach
2. Someone from Minnesota
3. Someone with direct connections to Minnesota
The coach will want the job as a "dream job." And will stay.

That eliminates Sumlin and Trestman.

I'd really love to know who this so-called person is. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single person who is from Minnesota and is a former Gopher assistant.

Are you saying we're going to hire Joe Salem?? Nah, he's from South Dakota...can't be him.

If these are indeed the desired prerequisites for the next coach, I'm going to have an issue with Maturi claiming this is a "nationwide" search. He should have simply said this is going to be a "statewide" or a "University of Minnesota-wide" search. ;)

Sounds like you almost want Mike Grant as HC, which would be quite the awful hire given the candidates that are out there.

Candidate will have one of my three points, not all. But ties to the state or university are the major factors. Trestman is a strong candidate, but there are probably some OCs or DCs at other Universities who will be considered. I assume Maturi will be on the University jet flying to neutral locals for the interviews. You won't see much of him for the next week or possibly two.

You literally have no idea what you are talking about.

We understood what you meant with crystal clarity. It's just that no one has any reason to consider you a credible source.

These are all "wouldn't it be nice" criteria, but they are secondary matters. If all we cared about is someone from Minnesota who would stay forever, Joe Salem would still be here.

What is this Neinas Search Firm going to do if we've already got our final 4?

Mike Shannahan (sp) is coming home? Will he bring Tim B. back as a recruiting coordinator, one can only hope!

Well the only other name that would fit Letsgogophers criteria would be Cory Sauter, now the HC at Southwest St.

One thing that bothers me about Sumlin is that he loses to Rice--twice in three years, now. The best (albeit limited) evidence we have is that he doesn't exactly rise to the occasion in rivalry games.

Why don't you just name the coach? Someone from Minnesota. Does that mean they were born here? I can't think of anyone who fits this. I can say I fit 4 out of the 5.

Don't you think it's interesting how Maturi went from one day saying we will spend up to 3 mil a year for five years for a coach. Then two days later that we need someone "Minnesota-Like?" The two are not the same. So he either had a dose of fiscal reality, or changed the priorities for the new coaches credentials. The U will not spend even close to that number.

Iowa spends over 3.5 million for a football coach. Maturi now wants "Minnesota-cheap" and our football program has already given up competing with iowa and wisky. The administration at the University of Minnesota will insure that the past 40 years was NO fluke. prexy b and maturi will insure that the tradition is carried on, it would appear. The only hope is to start cutting non-revenue men's sports.

No, because that's not what he said.

I look forward to reading your rant in the a.m. while I am enjoyng my Folgers 100% Columbian.

I am still thinking that Jim Nendel is in Maturi's top 5.

Maturi's exact quote, we will pay up to 2-3 million a year with a five year contract...I believe that has now changed. It will be more in the 1-1.2 range. Top end 1.5

In complete and utter awe

Watching you piece together these quotes and connect these dots with surgical precision has been beyond impressive.

Have you considered employment with Scotland Yard?

Looking at Sumlin's wikipedia page it says he was a WR and QB coach with Minnesota in the mid 90's. He was born in Indiana and played at Purdue so he has Big Ten roots. He was an offensive coordinator under Bob Stoops at Oklahoma where he was successful and so far has done well at Houston going 10-3 in his second season last year. My friend lives in Houston and says that people love him there. He may be a risk but he sure has the resume. I'd be very happy with Sumlin as our next coach!

I met him while he was here. Nice guy and a great story teller. People would connect with him. Would he be the first African American head coach in the Big Ten since Dennis Green at Northwestern?

My favorite candidate right now is Brady Hoke. He did well at Ball St and it looks like he has the Aztec's winning in just his second year. Their two loses are to Mizzou and BYU and both were by three points. Still, I'd love to have Leach come here just because how much it would it would annoy our neighbors to no end. Who knows what will happen. Currently there are only 25 coaches who make more than $1.5 million. If we extent a significant contract to someone they just might bite. Also, it doesn't look like a lot of jobs will be open this year. We'll probably be the first to hire someone so something good is bound to happen. We're certainly due.

I'd love to know who your source is, because I can't see more than two of those guys even garnering an interview.

Mike Stoops would be a terrible fit here. He is a macho, hyperactive loose cannon. He'd alienate people more than Brewster did. I can't see Maturi giving him the time of day. Plus, his Arizona tenure has been mediocre at best (he was on the hot seat to start this season). That'd be a bad hire, in my opinion. I can't see Maturi meshing with Stoops in any way, shape or form.

Tommy Tubberville does nothing for me. He's struggling at Texas Tech right now.

Leach, if Maturi decides to go that way, would be fine and certainly there would seem to be some interest on Leach's part. But, as indicated, Bruininks has said he'd prefer to steer clear of "baggage."

Sumlin will likely get looked at, be interested, and could be in play.

Not sure who your source is, but I find it very hard to believe that those four are the front runners. (Not doubting you GL, just doubting your source.)

If I gave up my sources, I'd have none. Believe me or not, but I believe this person.

Agree with tj here. I will add that I don't think the U will go anywhere near Leach.

GL: You should not be leaving the country at times like this...........Gopher Hole suffers in your absence. Not sure how much you have caught up on but check out Bleed's threads on Shama and Prez B's Q & A,....... good reads.

Thanks for the tip, I'm going to read those right now. I'll try not to leave next time we have the biggest event happen in 4 years! ;)
