per USA Today:

Mississippi coach Lane Kiffin is done ignoring what the transfer portal has done to college football recruiting.

"I don't think people really say it this way, but let's not make a mistake: We have free agency in college football," Kiffin said. "The kids a lot of times go to where they're going to get paid the most. No one else is saying that, maybe. But the kids say 'This is what I'm getting here from NIL.' "

Over the last three years, there have been three major changes to college football that have created the mess that is modern recruiting.

"Right now you're practicing for bowl games," Kiffin said. "We had a player not here (Monday) because he's still on his official visit to another place. Just really think about that. It's very strange. I had a recruiting weekend this weekend where I had to fly out really quick to go see someone that's at another school but is in the portal."

"At least in the NFL there's free agent contracts so they know what it is and they have to sign it, versus places saying, 'Hey, when you come here you're going to get this much money,' and then when they get there, do they really get it?" Kiffin said. "It's a new world."

Go Gophers!!

Reminds me of the guys who get caught stealing in some form and claims “everyone else does it”.

Maybe Lane is right in many cases, and maybe that’s the folks lane surrounds himself with…..

Kiffin is a tool....but he isn't wrong in this case. The overall concept of NIL is a good thing for players. But schools using it as a way to openly pay players is not what it was intended for and they better get a handle on it soon to keep teams from just openly buying players. I mean the 50K for any scholarship lineman that Texas is trying to pull is a complete joke and should not be allowed to happen.

Level playing field in college athletics.......

This whole thing is as wrong as a college coach negotiating a change of location after just 1 year on the job. It isn't right but it can be done. Those who do it should ask themselves are they just about the money or are they about the overall academic system and process. NIL makes sense in helping college athletes, but this will get out of hand quickly.

I, like many of you predicted this would happen. Now the “rich” really prosper at the expense of schools like the Gophers. Sad

not Really sure I agree with you at all.
How has playing field changed at all in terms of actual game results? No evidence there is less parity right now than 3-5 years ago. If there is evidence at all it is probably the other way.

The thing that stuck out to me is that he is allowing a player who is in portal to continue to practice with the team.
I had thought this would occur at some point but that’s faster than I thought.

I'm fine with players getting paid as they are already on scholarship. But there should be a line drawn. Amateur athletics will lose all competitiveness if the big conference teams are allowed to buy their teams.

I don't know that it is at the expense of the Gophers but the schools with the boosters with the deepest pockets certainly stand to benefit from this most if the NCAA doesn't do anything to reign it in some.

I agree with you, but how do you stop it? Texas isn't paying the 50k to linemen, a private organization is. How do you stop that while allowing other private organizations to pay other players?

The Supreme Court essentially laughed at drawing a such a line. 9-0.

I agree to a point, but will a 4* RB earn more as the 5th string RB at Ohio State or the starting RB at Minnesota? Somewhere there will be a tipping point which will still allow good players to end up here. Hopefully that line is not skewed too heavily towards the powerhouses.

One other area this will change sports, is I think there could be an emerging business for HS players to promote themselves. Think of Noel Devine was coming into college today. He was already so well-known from his HS days, he could have cashed in huge before even playing a down. So in his case it wouldn't have mattered as much which school he went to. In his case, it might have even benefitted him where he would be the featured part of the offense right away, and not have to share the spotlight with other great RBs, Receivers and QBs like might exist on Alabama.

The ONLY way to stop it is practice roster limits and game roster limits.
70 guys? 80 guys? 85 guys?

Limiting roster size is the only way to do it. You want to fill up with transfers? You can’t have more than 85 guys practice. (The smaller the number the more the talent spreads).

That is for people much smarter than me to figure out... :)

Will get interesting when we hit a point where a team is paying guys more in NIL money than the cost of their scholarship so they are walking on and paying their own way in order to cash in the NIL check.

Tough to say where all this will lead but the initial outlook isn't great which is not surprising to most.

Kiffin’s real complaint: Mississippi’s boosters don’t pay players the most.
There boosters have been pretty legendary over the years for payoffs so surprised he would be upset about this situation at Mississippi.

Sorry if I have missed this but if an individual reaps the benefits of NIL dollars can the educational institution pull their “scholarship” and make them pay tuition (at retail dollars)?

When do Harvard and Yale start to dominate? Lots of big boosters there for NIL.

Texas just pulled in a 5 star O lineman who decommitted from Oregon, so it's not that they're 'trying' to pull this, they've done it and this will be implemented, just not sure if it's now or next year. What a recruiting tool! I don't think we have 'college' sports any longer. This is the minor leagues now.

Lane will probably leave Ole Miss for a more fertile NIL destination shortly.
It's going to divide college football... between those schools who have boosters that are willing to shell out a bunch of money and the schools who cannot pay. Those that can't pony up the $$$$ will be second class programs. Sure, a lot of this has gone on in the past under the table, so to speak. Now, though, it's all going to be done out in the open all nice and legal.

We'll be seeing the best coaches going to the schools who are willing to work with the boosters to get recruits paid... The good thing is that a school that wants to "step up to the big time" will be able to buy their way into relevancy... Does Minnesota have the local boosters who are willing to pay for a big time program? We're gonna find out.

Wait til schools like NDSU start getting "raided" for prospects... Will FCS teams be able to hang on to their star players? It's going to be interesting to see what happens. People have joked about Abilene Christian being Gopher country, but the sort of thing that has brought players like Ryan Stapp to the Gophers is going to become more and more prevalent. It won't be the senior graduate transfers like Jack Gibbons with only one season remaining... it'll be players with 2 and 3 seasons transferring, and it's going to happen a lot.
