Ky Thomas enters portal

Bummer.

Wish young man well, I think he'll be a good one

I'm surprised, he would get carries next year, and a ton of carries in two years. If it's based on playing time I'm shocked at the lack of patience, but could be other factors in play. We always jump to playing time.

reading between the lines - Thomas wants to be the #1 RB. Assuming he has met with the coaches, he came away believing that he will not be the #1 RB next year.

and if that is not the issue, then Thomas has some other type of issue with the school or the coaches, beyond playing time or # of carries.

happy players don't leave. guys leave because they are looking for something they do not think they can get in their current situation.

final thought - Fleck hinted that there would be more departures. Did he know this was coming? Did he suspect?

and long term - the kid coming in from TX had better be good.

Irving is a better complementary back and Thomas is a better primary back. With the other 3, probably the conversation with Thomas was…you’re probably 4th if those guys are healthy.
Probably the conversation with Irving was…even if everyone is back there are still ways we can get you on the field
If the coaches really had this conversation I respect the honesty, but I have a hard time believing this is what happened.

Wonder if these guys have a conversation with the coaches about this or they just spring it on the coaches. Would much rather have him than the coming off injury running backs. Guess he doesn’t think sharing carries is his best avenue to the NFL.

I have a hard time believing Thomas would have been any worse than 2-3 on the depth chart. It's disappointing but not surprising.

Unfortunately only one gets to be on the field at a time in our offense.

This happens all the time. You talk to players about their role. And if you blow smoke up your players’ asses your program falls apart long term

Do you think coaches don’t meet with players? Or do you think they tell players whatever they want to hear? Short term that might be better but long term not sustainable

Sucks but not surprising. RB's are a commodity in both college and the pros. I'd want to be somewhere I'll be featured and then go pro after a sophomore or junior season if that's in the cards.

I really doubt that Mo is going to return to form next year (hope I'm wrong but history is not kind to runners with injured achilles) and MN without its offensive line will not be nearly as dominant running the ball. I might not rush to get out of that room if I were these guys.

I’m surprised. We don’t know if Mo and Trey are can make a complete recovery so there was a good chance Ky would be in the 1-2 mix.

I wish him the best and hope he finds what he’s looking for.

I'm pretty sure the guys in the RB room have a very good idea if Trey is gonna be ready to go in 2022. I don't see a decision like this not factoring that info in.

If Mo doesn't return to form, that would be a reason to stay. And it's not like our O-line will suddenly be awful. We'll still be one of the top rushing teams in power 5, IMO.

Assuming Mo and Potts are healthy with Irving running back will be the least of our problems. I also think the kid from Texas (Evans) is going to be a stud. There are only so many carries and I think Thomas sees that.

I suppose this is the way of the college football world now..... that's not to say I like this world, but a kid that highly recruited wants to be 'the guy'. Have to assume this means that Potts is coming back and Ky knows it first.

Unless Bryce Williams leaves, I have to think he will be a factor too.

I don't think they sit every player down this time of year and explain what their role will be next year and where they are on the depth chart exactly. Unless they WANT the player to leave. Some coaches likely do lie, but I'm guessing the majority stay in a grey area and don't go into super fine detail about the situation. It's not necessarily lying as they might not know themselves how the depth chart will look at this point.

If I am either of his hometown schools I am working hard to get him. He would make an instant impact at either (and both are pretty good coaches IMO)

I state putting together a big ten west all star team
If closer to home, that's Ames, Lawrence, Manhattan, Columbia and Lincoln territory.

Nebraska or Colorado would be interesting being on our schedule next year.

He has about 8 P5 schools within 5 hour drive of hometown.

Any coach who is good at all will have a sit down at the end of every season. Many high school programs even do that

I'm not surprised one bit. It's a different era and kids believe they deserve their due when they perform. We don't know what's going on in this guys life. Perhaps he wants to play one more year and go pro? He wouldn't get the carries to showcase his ability if that is the case. Either way, the guy wants to be #1 and with Mo coming back, that just wasn't in the cards.

That was my bold prediction for next year; that we wouldn't have these 4 RB's on our Roster who played a key roll this year when Kill stepped on the field again next fall. Seemed like a no brainer to me just because the way things go these days and it really doesn't matter with some players about the culture in place, which is why I was told nothing would happen and all would remain on the roster.

I'm not pleased this was announced, and I'm not pounding my chest here but to me it seemed like it certainly wasn't a bold take, rather an obvious one.

Good luck to Ky!

They aren't making the depth chart for next fall in December or January.

Has it ever been said, what exactly was Pott’s injury?

people have said it was a danger to be career ending, but it sure doesn’t seem to fit in terms of what one typically sees in football injuries. Head injury? Brain injury? Internal organs? Vascular?

Yes, agreed. PJ has said they do this with every player after the season to make sure they know where they stand.

All we can go by is that he said he will be back in 2022. I haven't seen anything else.

No, they're not making a depth chart. But they can definitely tell a kid if he has a clear path to the #1 spot.

Why do you think Clark and Annexstad announced their transfer right before Tanner officially announced his return?
