Koi Perich Transfer Portal

The corollary to Fleck not talking about outgoing transfers is his locker-room surfing after wins. He's consistent with how he treats situations. He surfs the locker room after they beat Northwestern State because that's how he celebrates wins with the team, it doesn't matter the quality of the opponent. He hasn't commented about Koi because he doesn't comment about outgoing transfers, it doesn't matter the quality of the player.

A quick Google search didn't turn up any comments he made when Phillip Daniels left, and the only outgoing transfer I recall him commenting on is Cam Wiley. That has stuck in my memory because he talked about how much he thought of Wiley as a person.

He'll get asked about it during his next media availability and I'm guessing he'll deflect by saying how excited he is about the recruiting class and the transfers that have come in. His focus is on the team he has, not the team he might have had, and that seems like the best way to approach the job.

Vehemently disagree that they would be pointless.

You're free to feel that way but that's going too far, for me.

As I said, it's possible for things to live in the middle and it's possible for multiple things to be true at the same time.

The internet viciously tries to not allow that, but that's how things usually are in the real world.
The tweets players put out about their love for their previous school as they are heading to the portal are completely pointless. There is nothing wrong with doing them but they are basically just a form letter.

Fleck doesn't waste time commenting on players that don't want to be Gophers. It would be one thing if he was taking shots at them but he isn't doing that either. I am all for a coach putting his focus on the guys that want to be part of the team and moving on quickly from those that don't.

I'm sure you have no interest in a semantics debate, nor do I.

If the players are doing them, that in itself proves that they aren't pointless. And indeed, they aren't pointless. We aren't going to agree, that's fine.

You are very much welcome to feel as you do. I say you and Fleck are wrong. And it wouldn't have to be any big deal, either. Could be a small thing, an acknowledgement. That should be done. I'll even go so far to dare say it is owed to them.

I struggle to see how consistency, in of itself, therefore automatically lends legitimacy.

I just view those as two instances where Fleck is consistently doing the wrong (spirited) thing. My opinion, which very few agree with and that's fine.

It wouldn't be pointless to you and any other array of people who are obsessed as to why Perich left or deeply want it to be related to some flaw with Fleck or his management style. The majority of the fanbase aren't the vocal minority who despise Fleck. Whether it's black and white or some kind of gray is totally irrelevant.

Again, it would only serve to validate or invalidate whatever public opinions are, which is extremely selfish. It does nothing to forward the program or enhance it in any way, it only creates opportunities for conspiracy theorists to pile on to the topic further and potentially create an absolutely unnecessary distraction for the team in the media when the focus should be offseason development and having another winning season in 2026.

He gone, move on. Let's talk about the dudes who wanna be here.

lol @ "owed to them".

I am sure Fleck has lots of conversations with players who are leaving and this gratitude you are looking for may even get expressed in those meetings. Just because it isn't on social media doesn't mean it didn't happen.

How many coaches are actually tweeting or putting out press releases on players that are leaving? I'm betting very few....

Can't imagine Curt Cignetti sending out a tweet thanking a transfer for what they did after leaving Indiana.....LOL

Give us an example of a P5 coach addressing the media about a specific player on their team entering the transfer portal. It doesn’t happen. It’s 100 percent the norm for coaches not to address the specific situation publicly.

Your first two paragraphs must be aimed at some other GH poster, because I haven't said anything like that nor am I expecting any such thing.

Here would be a perfectly good example.

Fleck: Thanks for coming to the 2026 Gopher football spring press conference. Any questions?

Media: Yes coach, could you comment on Koi Perich entering the transfer portal and transferring to another Big Ten program for 2026?

Fleck: Here's what I have to say on that. Koi is an incredible athlete and football player, and was a top rated recruit in the country from right here in Minnesota. He is one of us. And he chose to come to the U and play Gopher football. He busted his tail for us for two years and made a considerable impact on our program. I thank him for that and wish him well in both football and life. That's all I I'll be saying about that, and now I'd like to move forward and discuss this great upcoming team and the great young men we have here at the University of Minnesota.

Pretty damn easy. No need to pretend like doing this would be like doing a backflip.

That's a fine point and I would expect such gratitudes are expressed in such meetings.

For a guy like Koi, he still absolutely should make a small public comment on it.

My opinion. Few if any on here (who post) agree. I don't care

PJ Fleck only does things that are the norm among P4 (not P5) head coaches.

You pegged him.

This seems to really be bothering you.

Why? What does it achieve? He could also easily tell us about his daily workout regimen or what he ate for breakfast but it's irrelevant to the mission.

Are you honestly questioning why a head football coach should use 30sec of his public platform to express a small bit gratitude to the biggest recruit in some time for selecting the Gophers in the first place?

Gratitude achieves nothing?

You're not even being reasonable.

Nice job avoiding the question. What does it achieve in terms of the program's success or failure? Nothing. So the real reason you want him to say something is so you can feel all warm and bubbly inside or, more likely, so you can overanalyze every word he says to try to twist the meaning of the response into whatever bonkers conspiracy theory you carry in your brain. You're not a grounded person.

Perich is no longer in the program, the page is turned.

Does "difficult conversations" ring a bell?
