Koi Perich Transfer Portal

My wife grew up in Eugene. She doesn't think that he will start for the Ducks. I think he will.
Hype may propel him to starting. Continuing to play/start sporting a sub-60 PFF, suspect. Not when they have options and could care less if he pouts and jumps ship. They are probably banking they can unlock the 2024 version and hoping to avoid the 2025 version. My guess is he will level out somewhere in between. Does that justify whatever money and perks he got? I have no idea, and I really don't care anymore. He's gone, it looks like we spent the money he would have consumed on upgraded resources at key positions and possibly jettisoned a locker room prima donna.

Thanks for the memories my colorful overpriced carp. Now go eff yourself bottom feeder. ;)

I think Moore goes, it's a weaker QB class you still gotta think he goes in the top 10.

I get why Oregon took Raiola, he does have a special arm talent. But there are a lot of issues too. When is the last time he played somewhere that he wasn't coddled? He doesn't seem to play that well when faced with adversity and he holds onto the ball way too long.

At time, it felt like Raiola was bigger than the Nebraska program. He's not bigger than Oregon. They have Akili Smith's kid chomping at the bit and if Raiola has a game where he takes 5 sacks when he should have taken 1, he'll have competition.

It's probably good for him to go somewhere less incubated and the upside is through the roof for both the Ducks and Raiola, but I do think there is some chance - 25-40% that this goes sideways for him.
I do think the increased team competition will be good for both Raiola and Perich, either they will reach their potential, or move on in a different life path. I think both may have been somewhat over marketed at Neb. and Minn. Probably can just be football players at Oregon.

Some people are bus drivers that naturally work to take the group to a new higher destination (e.g., Carter Coughlin and Mo Ibrahim come to mind - Drake Lindsey showing real promise) but most are bus riders. It's a disappointment when you have belief in someone as a driver that turns out to be just a rider. It happens all the time.

Raiola had too much expectations early on for the supporting cast around him, I think. It may have led to him trying to “make stuff happen” too much in addition to his possible Mahomes emulation complex. If he just tries to develop as a QB at Oregon within their offense, he may really break out. Dante Moore had pretty mediocre stats before transferring to UO.

By the way it’s kind of interesting that 2/4 of the semifinals QBs were from Michigan hometowns yet UMich and MSU totally missed out on them. Not to mention MSU also had Sam Leavitt and Katin Houser on the roster and look where MSU went after they left.

Serious question, what makes one an M man? You play a game for the Gophers?

Does playing for the Gophers make you one no matter how your tenure ends?

Koi Perich, the figure, is a bigger loss than Koi Perich, the player. He was the face of the program. I have never seen more jerseys of a single player in the 21 years I have had season tickets than I have of Koi Perich. His loss brings much more emotion than Ky Thomas leaving to Kansas. I hope he has a long and happy life but I also wouldn't be heartbroken if his football career continues the trend we saw from his freshman year to his sophomore year.
2 yrs of busting your ass is good enough for me. Others consider Brosmer an M man for a single season.

I think a lot of people are underestimating Raiola. I would be willing to bet he has a very good showing at Oregon. His stats before getting hurt at Nebraska were very good and he was not playing with nearly of offensive talent he will have now.

I don't know enough about Oregon's defensive scheme to have any idea how they will use him. He's extremely athletic and if they have a safety who plays "center field" in football terms, that would probably be Perich's best position. It's funny how it works. Kill played his safeties extremely "up" in the defensive set and Fleck has backed them off some. Different players fit different schemes (duh!) and I don't think Oregon would put this much effort into landing Perich if they were just throwing stuff at the wall.

True
What does that say about what he sees happening in Minnesota?
Even with the expanded playoff field there is still a fairly limited number of teams that are true contenders on a year to year basis and it has been that way for a long time in college football. Oregon is and has been one of those teams.

Maybe they just needed a returner!

Calm down, it’s a joke people!

I haven't looked, but I presume their thread about Raiola is as harsh about his play as this one is about Koi's.
Koi is one of those strange players where I would certainly rather he be here, but he also really disappointed me at times last year. Regardless of transfer or sticking around I would have had those things to say.

Both underperformed (backed up by PFF stats) given the dollars and celebrity status heaped upon them. Granted, they were both young and maybe getting a lot more playing time than they would have gotten at Oregon or OSU as freshman and sophomores. It could have been their plan all along to use MN and NE as stepping stones. On to the next Gopher stars!

Yep, really tough to live up to the expectations for a guy like him. He did as a freshman, fell short of it as a sophomore. Plus that Cal game is tough to forget about where he had an absolute disaster of a game. Change of scenery might be a good thing for him but sucks to see him go as well.

It will be interesting to see how both progress. Both players have flaws that were evident last season. In Koi's case, I have wondered whether he was asked to play close to the line of scrimmage at times because that's his best position or if he was the best option available to the coaches. I share your enthusiasm for what's to come for our Gophs!

Just wondering, how does this type of thing affect jersey sales in the future? Who wants to buy a player’s jersey when they could just leave the next year? Wouldn’t that make you more likely to buy generic team merchandise or nothing at all? In the past, if they were good young, you could pretty much guarantee they’d be thought of as a Gopher forever. This also lowers the value to local advertisers. Why invest in a local player that people love now, but hate when they leave? All this player movement should actually weaken individual player NIL, right?

This skews things even more towards large wealthy donors funding whole teams vs. individual NIL deals from smaller employers, right? Look who’s dominating NIL right now - Oregon, Indiana, Miami, Texas Tech, etc. This really is starting to look like MLB and I’m not sure that’s a league investors would want to emulate.

People naturally want to attach to certain players. That connection is important for fan loyalty and teams want that. There will be changes made to NIL and the portal because it’s not good for business as currently constructed. The only question is when.

Agree his loss does bring more emotion, but as far as wins, the impact won’t come close to the impact that losing Bucky Irving had.

I am pretty sure they cannot, as that would be considered "pay to play". I think contracts can have clauses for things other than performance on the field (academic success, no off-field idiocy, etc).
Yeah, and nobody wants that
