Koi Perich Transfer Portal

If he had left after his Freshman year, I probably would’ve been more upset. It’s be great to have him, but he obviously doesn’t have the same passion for the Gophers as the other big names that are running it back this year. This is going to happen to all programs every year in this portal age.

All things considered, we didn’t lose a lot this portal season, and got a nice surprise from a true impact player in Smith returning.

This is the fan mindset that endures Gopher football and men's hoops having 2 B10 titles since 1970

That's 2 out of 130 chances with no relief in sight

It's gonna be really awkward around here if he comes back.

Let’s see, I guess the consensus is that the kids are prick, he’s not very good, he’s not very fast, he can’t tackle well, he freelances instead of playing his position, and he’s wasting a chance to be a Minnesota legend. I know I’m missing 10 or 15 other bad takes. Watching everything here I guess I’m in agreement with him that it’s best to move on. Find some place that appreciates him more. Me, I’ll remember him 12 feet up in the air making the pic against USC to seal the game. I’ll also remember him as a freshman all American, first team all big 10 as a freshman and all Big Ten as a sophomore; albeit second and third team.
I’ll always value that USC pick—it was a legendary moment. But it’s time to snap back to the 2025 reality.

The Gophers appear to be finally running like a business, and that means divesting from talented but high-maintenance assets that erode the system. The second the staff told him 'no' on offense to focus on safety first, his defensive discipline vanished. You don't triple your missed tackles (from 6 to 23) in one year and have a 126.3 passer rating against by accident; that’s the sound of a bruised ego having a tantrum.

He clearly thought he was Travis Hunter, but once he lost his offensive looks, he started 'eye-peeking' and freelancing on defense to hunt for the highlights he felt he was owed. The Rate Bowl was the final proof: the staff 'bribed' him with a career-high 22 offensive snaps, and suddenly his defensive grade (69.7) hit its highest point in months.

The silence from the guys actually staying in the building is telling—haven't seen too many vets (none to be exact) pleading for him to stay. Zachary Harden's "My turn!" is a canary in the coal mine. If a player needs to be 'bribed' with catches just to stay in his gap and tackle, he’s a contractor, not a partner. People tend to not get as upset when a contractor leaves, because it was always a transactional relationship in the first place.

I'm with him—move on to a place that values 'hero ball' over the team. I’ll take the USC memory, but I’ll take the $1M+ in saved cap space and a secondary filled with guys who actually want to be here for the right reasons and don't need souvenir cups to try and avoid missing 27% of their tackles.

A-f*ckin-men!

I don't know how much faith I put in Mike Max, but in his segment last night he said the Gophers offer to Perich was seven figures and that Perich is going to play one more year of college ball and then declare for the draft. I am not Nostradamus, but I had the impression (minus Maxy's sources) that Perich simply wants more visibility than what he will get playing for the Gophers. Pure business move.
Maxxie can throw any $$ amount out there and guess what, nobody is going to contest it, because they can't.

He better hop to it because my understanding after reading this thread is that he’s lazy, soft, selfish and not even the top safety on the team so he really should transfer out before he gets benched or pushed out.
Saying he isn’t a can’t miss prospect is not that same thing as saying what you said.
While some are saying those things, most criticizing him are just saying he isn’t as good as some think he is

I think the fairest assessment of perich is, he is really talented. But he is inconsistent and at times undisciplined on the field.

I wish Koi the best. He doesn't owe us anything. We got 2 years of some great memories, more good than bad. I hope his new spot will help with on-field discipline and reduce missed tackles. He's a baller.
He is talented, no question. At the U he was a big fish in a medium pond. If he lands at a helmet school, he will be a medium fish in a large pond. He'll need to continue to work to develop that talent and become more disciplined if he wants a long career in the NFL.

Keeping Drake and Smith was bigger than keeping Koi.

Pretty much spot on. He sucked this year. It was easily noticable. Some of it was scheme. Mostly him just sucking.

A little self-awareness on your part wouldn’t hurt. I fully understand that a good chunk of folks on here disagree with me on a lot of things and or have me blocked. I just can’t help a few takes the main one being with all the good things we have going on I can’t believe for example that eight or nine game days this year we looked like we were completely unprepared to play — and then I go a bit nuts. Not sure if I add any value or not here, but I am who I am and I like the intel that comes from the site, mostly.

You, on the other hand, feel like you add all kinds of value here when really you absolutely don’t. You’re a one trick pony who doesn’t know shit about football. When I read your takes I generally flashback to the Animal House scene where the dean tells the freshman that fat drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son; in your case since I’m not sure about the fat and drunk part. I emphasize the stupid.
I really wouldn't harp too heavily on my lack of value because, while you try to come across as a humble and sophisticated message board savant (who thinks one only knows football if they played it), you still dedicate time and effort to responding to a person who is purportedly valueless to this board. Who's the stupid one again?

I'm a generally pleasant person with generally positive takes when it comes to this program, I don't sit and wait at the keyboard for things to go wrong so I can lose my mind and shit all over the coach at every chance I get. You're a toxic dude who never has anything good to say, and when you do, it's typically only as an underhanded compliment.

I have sympathy for the people who have to tolerate you face to face on a daily basis. I can't imagine you're much more pleasant there, although by necessity you probably have to show more restraint. Look that definition up while you're at it.

😘

I didn't realize that Harden was a true freshman and did not redshirt.

He wasn't the top safety on the team, that is Kerry Brown.

Wish he would ride it out here but, he did not have a great year based on expectations and last years production. Next year he may go either way, something was off, even though some think he was the same guy. If he isn’t happy here, he won’t help himself or the team.

For the sake of consistency I'll go ahead and say I don't want him back. We should be rallying around the kids who signed back up, aren't shopping around, and are focused on next season, like A. Smith, DT, Drake, and the others. I want to cheer for players who want to play for Minnesota, not ones disrupting the team from the inside by seeking the highest bidder upon first opportunity.

If this turns out being one big farce and Koi returns, every kid on that defense will have some trust issues and will second guess if Koi's head is in the game or on his personal highlight reel whenever he fucks something up on the field. I feel like there will be more indefinable damage to the roster with him returning than him leaving.

I think there's quite a bit of truth to this.

I want Koi back. He was great as a true freshman, but he took a big step back this season. The talent is obvious but his body language was off all year, especially after the Cal game.

A DB group with Koi, Brown, and Nestor should not give up the 2nd highest completion % in the B1G. I think part of that could be coaching and part of it is due to Koi regressing.

This team can be really good next year with or without Koi. I prefer to have him back and bought in like he was as a Freshman.

Not saying I don’t want him back but you have some great points.

If Koi was all in the boat...for sure everybody would want him back. In most any discussion he is #1 departing in our portal. #2 for me is Fame Ijeboi. I liked how hard he ran and he seemed tough.

Who are the #3, #4, and #5 guys leaving in the portal? Guys you wish were staying?

Coleman easy #3.

Good ponts but let's be honest, we're OK with good, talented players shopping around from other teams if Gophs are a potential destination.

No disagreement there, but the other teams aren't our team

Six yards. He averaged more per catch and added a dynamic to the receiving room Koi doesn't have. Also remember him drawing a couple PI calls. Who would you put at #3?

Coleman was mainly a one trick pony. He’s tall and fast and just ran deep most of the time. He’s not a good route runner, not very strong, and has average hands.

I don’t really have a #3. Everyone else who left is just replaceable depth. If I had to pick one it would be Bryan.

I'm certainly not losing sleep over it. Bryan is a good choice too.
