Koi Perich Transfer Portal

Like a bunch of people have said, I'd be a lot more upset had he left before this season. But I wasn't all that impressed with his performance this season. If he's making the money he allegedly is here, he didn't earn it.

And I get Coney's bit on Twitter is a proud Gopher alum, but honestly, I doubt that many kids in this state could name a Gopher player, much less look up to one.

Whoever he goes to isn't likely to want to screw around with him playing offense. That was pretty obviously something PJ agreed to do to get him to come back this year. He will never play on offense in the NFL.

Fair, especially if he goes to a school with CFP expectations.

I think the optics of Perich leaving with the impacts on future recruiting, accumulating and maintaining talent are are more of an effect than losing his on field contributions.

Could have been an ambassador for the program in decades to come.

Bummer. First "star" talent to bail since Bucky Irving.

AD needs to step it up. I’m pretty sure Coyle won’t even start a GoFundMe, let alone land a whale.

I get the posts saying college sports is a business and he's going in search of more money. But honestly, to me it's another sign that if this is going to be treated like a professional business with players getting paid, then contracts need to start getting introduced for a certain number of years.

Unfortunate news but a team like MN has to put their money in far more impactful positions. If they’re paying a star S big money, it likely means that they had to go cheap upfront.

Hopefully, this theory holds and they greatly improve the DL this offseason.

The Gophers still have a good safety room without Perich.

Perich vs other Gopher safeties...
---------------------------------------------------------
Perich (2024): 28 solo / assist, 3 PD, 5 INT, 2.5 TFL
Perich (2025): 39 solo / 43 assist, 2 PD, 1 INT, 1 SACK, 1 FF, 3 TFL, 1 TD, 26.3 av kick return

VS

Brown (2025): 40 solo / 16 assist, 4 PD, 2 INT, 4 TFL
Brown (2024): 34 solo / 29 assist, 4 PD, 2 INT, 3 TFL
Nubin (2023): 34 solo / 34 assist, 4 PD, 5 INT, 1 SACK, 1 FF, 1 FR, 1 TFL
Nubin (2022): 37 solo / 18 assist, 3 PD, 4 INT, 1 FF, 2 TFL
Howden (2022): 40 solo / 18 assist, 5 PD, 2 INT, 3.5 TFL
Nubin (2021): 35 solo / 14 assist, 2 PD, 3 INT, 1 TFL
Howden (2021): 34 solo / 9 assist, 5 PD, 1.5 TFL
Winfield Jr (2019): 62 solo / 26 assist, 1 PD, 7 INT, 3 SACK, 2 FF, 3.5 TFL, 1 TD

Thoughts:

In 2024, I would start him over Brown. But not in 2025. If Perich didn't play in 2025 I'm not sure the Gophers lose any more games due to defense. A young guy would step up and solidify the role, just like every year. In fact, we probably win the Cal game. Not saying Perich isn't athletically gifted. I am saying that his play in 2025 was about the minimum from what I expect from a safety playing for the Gophers.

Blame the new ‘college’ football environment. Every year everybody is a free agent.

  • He didn't even play that well this season and there are still holes in his game
  • The media attention and marketing from his signing were more beneficial to the U than his actual production on he field
  • Our secondary will survive just fine and be OK.
  • The bigger news is Anthony Smith and Jaxon Howard returning. They know something we don't, they have high expectations. It's not like Koi would've been returning to a hollowed out defense. I wonder if this is roster competition, bad advice from his inner circle, some blue blood is offering him a lot of money, etc.
Happy new year friends

Sorry guys, my fault. I shouldn't have said he had a shitty attitude and considered himself above the team🤣

It sucks, but fuck him and his mercenary ass. I hope he ends up as a backup wherever he lands and the rest of his career is a repeated array of muffled punts at the five yard line and shitty arm tackles.

Ski U Mah, Go Gophers, and Fuck Off Koi Perich. 🫡🖕
If not Heather then maybe her teenage son?

I’m gonna be a dick and say that I don’t think he’s as solid as he thinks he is. He’s a nice player, but he is not anywhere close to cooper Dejean in terms of a cold ass white boy. Sad to see him go, but we will be absolutely fine.

And with that think I'm done attending any games til Coyle and whoever the current female president is are gone
lol. You are so invested in Koi that you’d stop being a fan over his departure?!
But yea, Coyle is soft and needs to go. He can’t find raise.

It's a numbers game. This year who were our biggest payouts going to? Probably Smith, Perich and Taylor.

Lindsey was an unknown so not getting nearly as much. Who earned their money this year? Smith and Lindsey. You can bet both got a raise and rightfully so. So Perich and Taylor were likely offered the same amount or slightly less as there is only so much to go around. That's why Taylor hasn't committed either.

Just my speculation.

will be interesting where he goes. made splash plays as a freshman that helped covered up other areas where he struggled. this past year when the splash plays were not there his whole mannerisms changed.
i think someone else said it earlier, hes a ballhawk type safety more so than in the box talking safety.

Actually the Gophers didn't lose any games by more than 38 points.

I guess that's not enough to keep Koi home.
We lost 42-3 at Ohio State. That’s 39. I was there and it was painful so I’m rounding it up to 40.

Koi will get more $ and better coaching at a helmet school. It sucks for fans, but is absolutely the right thing for him. It will benefit his current situation and his future prospects. I simply can’t blame him for leaving.
Agreed. Hard to blame him.

I do think he underperformed some this year, but he’s a talented player.

Laughing a bit at all the coping mechanisms here today…

Lots of truth in this. What hurts the most is that he is the face of our program. We will be fine on the field simply because there isn’t one player on any team that is bigger than the program.

Assuming Koi leaves for the NFL after next year. Who would you rather have for one more season: Anthony Smith or Koi Perich
