KFAN Knuckleheads a little sensitive today regarding...

Dumb tweet by Gopher sports that accomplishes nothing, but seeming petty. This board would have exploded if the Vikings official twitter tweeted out something similar on the day of a Gopher conference loss. I think the vast majority of football fans have both a favorite college team and a favorite pro team, and a ton of people root for both the Vikings and the Gophers. It was equally petty of PA to get involved, but at least his Twitter represents him and not a broad group of people like Gopher Sports. Once the initial tweet went out, whoever sent it out had to expect some blow back. I would think after all the years of losing, we could focus on the potential (and it is still just that) of a winning conference season as opposed to needing to take shots at others failures.

Translation: Back to your corner Gopher Sports. Know your role.

I didn't feel like listening to the news this morning on MPR so I thought I'd check out what the flagship station of the Gopher radio network had on today, figuring there'd at least be a little bit of Gopher discussion after the crazy game on Saturday. After 45 minutes, I arrived at work having heard about nothing but the 1-7 Vikings (very little discussion of the game itself and more about how tired the post-game cliches are) and some celebrity birthday drivel.

It's disgusting. I actually thought the move to KFAN for football broadcasts would buy some quality air time about the team. I stand corrected and I will go back to never listening to that station now...

The Gophers do need to stay humble. Pride goes before the fall.

As for KFAN, they sure do have a strange relationship with Gopher Football. I think they do a very nice job with the game broadcasts; as with the Viking broadcasts, they do much better overall than WCCO did. But there is certainly a pecking order over there, and the Vikings are at the top of it, leaving the Gophs as sort of the redheaded stepchild who gets beaten whenever the parent comes home drunk once again. I have known and listened to a lot of people who are in love with the sound of their own voice, but Paul Allen is in a different category than anyone else I've ever heard.

PA has always been a condescending prick about Gopher athletics and college sports in general. He fancies himself a big shot and has a superiority complex to mask his obvious lack of actual self esteem.

It says a lot more about both him and Barreiro that they even responded to such an innocuous tweet to begin with.

I am so out of the loop that I had no idea that Twitter was around 51 years ago.

I think the equivalent 51 years ago was the party line telephone. We had nine families on our party line. We knew everything about everybody (and of course they knew everything about us).

I'm not a Vikings guy, but I thought PA had a promising career when he started out, but he's turned into the worst kind of homer announcer out there. Heard the call on the Romo-to-Witten TD and I would have sworn he was clipping his nails given the tenor of his voice. And whenever Adrian Peterson gets the ball, he's reaching for his blood pressure meds. I understand he's working for the Vikings and homerism is par for the course for local teams everywhere these days, but he's just so over the top with the verbal fellatio that it gets a bit tiring.

I think the initial tweet was kind of petty. A college team claiming that they are the best team in town when the town has an NFL team is downright incorrect (I am sure it was facetious), and I fear that this thing comes off like when NDSU compares their win total after the last few seasons to Alabama's. The last thing we want is a Mystery, Alaska type game between the Gophers and Vikings.

That said, I am fine with fans and pundits making that kind of joke. I am a big fan of both teams, and am as distressed about the Vikings' struggles as I am excited about the Gophers' success, and I have made more than my share of such jokes.

I think the difference here is that both of these guys work for a radio station that is also the flagship station of the Gophers.

Gaard is on with P.A. on KFAN right now. P.A. is not being his normal dickish self. There is some good commentary.

If the roles were reversed in this, the board would be irate. This is just another questionable decision by the U in a long line if head scratchers. It's obvious there is not one group that oversees all of the marketing and PR that is released. I've got to think anyone with a bit of common sense would veto a tweet like that.

Light hearted, sure. But you're going to piss off way more people than you will entertain.

In this new era where social media is such an "important" part of our everyday lives, the U is not alone in needing a redesign of its marketing and media controls. Low level "interns" and staff are being thrown under the bus for putting out less than well thought out tweets and posts in every line of work and business

Love Boat, the Mooning Randy Moss and other incidents have me looking foreward to Saturday for my football entertainment. Sunday, the overpaid thugs and their shrill fans make it a good day to rake leaves!

I don't think there was anything wrong with the Gophers tweet. It's something that I have been hearing others saying lately.

PA, you either like him or you don't. I can't listen to him anymore (especially his Vikings broadcasts) as he is the opposite of understated. There is enough room for both teams to do well. I have wondered in the past why the Vikings don't do more with/for the Gopher football team.

Really dumb thread! We win three games in a row and we have arrogant fans, really stupid.
I actually get extremely annoyed by people trying to start a feud with the Vikings. They are not our problem! To paraphrase Pogo, "we have seen the enemy and he is us!"
If we had won two B1G championships in a row and were not getting any recognition, I would understand it. We have won three games in a row, and Saturday's game is basically a push. We have not "turned the corner" yet. A little humility would be a really rational course at the moment. We have actually gotten more attention than I thought we would at this point. I used to resent the hell out of the Vikings, but way too late I came to the conclusion that the Vikings are basically not the source of the U's football problems. The source of the problems has been crappy leadership from about 5 Presidents and 5 or more Athletic Directors. Our Athletic Directors have not been Directors, they have been Athletic Administrators. They balance the budget and make changes when they have no other choice. Ours have not even been willing to make hard choices about fixing underachieving revenue teams.
In a large urban market the media will naturally be more focused on the professional team. Who cares?
When we have a relevant team we will get all of the pub we should get. Getting primary attention from the media is a very mixed blessing. Get serious. When your are 6-6, 7-5 or 3-9, more people commenting on how average you are is not that helpful. If we had been the primary object of their attention for the last 40 years maybe the U would have been more aggressive in fixing the FB program. But probably not. But that chance would have been the only benefit it could have brought us. Most of the increased attention would have been even more shrill criticism than we received.
I believe the saying is "never start feuds with anyone who buys ink by the barrel", or in this case has 15 hours of air time per week. PA is obviously focused on the Vikings, it is his job. While I am not a Vikings fan, if the team I was an announcer for was 1-7, or even the team I care about was 1-7, I would be really disappointed as well.
Hubris cuts both ways, try growing up.

U wonder why the ego crazy 40 year old is divorced u ever see him at the bar?? lol watch out 20 year olds affairs will get u divorced everytime.

I like the vikes and gophers the same.. but PA has lots of issues can't handle his team sucking and other teams doing well.

Support the Vikings! Go to a game! Have a drunk vulgar fan throw up on you and your kids.

If the Randy Moss FAKE moon is considered an incident for you, you should probably shut off communication with the entire real world, because you are in for a long life. The FAKE moon is the most overblown touchdown celebration in the history of sports. Please note that Packer fans ACTUALLY MOON THE OPPOSING TEAM when they arrive to the stadium. This was his way of playing with the opposing crowd. And I hope you know that he never actually pulled down his pants.

KFAN is also the WPN (Wilf Propaganda Network).

They are very quick to defend the Purple in the face of anything that might criticize the Vikings.

You could not be more wrong here. The only purple apologist they have is PA. The power trip constantly rips the purple and same with Barreiro.

I think the hilarious aspect of this situation is one over sensitive fan base "gopher sports fans" is making fun of another overly sensitive fan base "Vikings fans".

The tweet was so stupid coming from Gophersports. Just not necessary. The media was already starting to pay attention in a positive light.

Hmmmmmm, I wonder if it's because on WCCO Sports Huddle they mentioned this is the last year of the Gophers radio deal before it goes up for bid, he probably got lectured by KFAN to not tick off the fan base so now all of a sudden he is acting all interested in the Gophs? Precious

That's very true as long as you take the Wilfs out of the equation. KFAN'S on air staff have all been right there when ripping the politicians for "gambling" devices, complaining about seat licenses, the Vikings record, play calling, Quarterbacks and trying to "undo" a done deal but the Wilfs.

How much discussion have you heard about the Wilfs operating like "racketeers" or wanting to protect their wealth from the public for "safety's sake' not because of public repercussions? How can this not be a constant source of ridicule from a station that either "tells it like it is" or constantly pats itself on the back for not being "homers"? That appears to be the major place where the "over sensitivity" isn't coming from Gopher Fans but from KFAN itself.

Yes, has anyone caught how negative Dan B became of Gov. Dayton after Dayton said the Wilf's finances should be looked at? He was very protective of the Wilf's interests.

What station would be a better host to Gopher Football?

I don't get why anyone would be upset with the tweet. It's an innocuous joke. Are the Vikings seriously so high and mighty that no one can take a (very very mild) joking shot at them?

It didn't even mention the Vikings, vs the many many overt rips on the gophers. If they had said, "hey Vikings fans, tired of watching a bunch of overpaid losers? Come give the gophers a try" then it may have been warranted. This is a very obvious marketing ploy to get people excited bout the gophers, nothing more.

Again, the bizarre complex this board has about the Vikings continues. If a similar Tweet had been made bashing the Gophers, this thread would already be 10 pages long and consist of nothing but tantrums. "You've won THREE conference games, bro" is a reasonable response to that tweet.

Please, for God's sake, stop. Stop ALL of this. It's ****ing dumb.

Dan Barriero's point wasn't that the Wilf family's finances shouldn't be held to scrutiny. In principle, he was on board with the idea. The crux of Barreiro's complaint was that the investigation should have occurred before the bill was signed, sealed, and delivered. The rip was on Dayton and others such as Ted Mondale for not taking any interest in the Wilfs' background when they wanted to get the stadium deal done and then later climbing on a moral high horse over a lawsuit in New Jersey that was known to be in progress and potentially damaging well before we even had a stadium bill much less approval. His point and tone were far from protective of the Vikes and the Wilfs. It was all about going after Dayton and company for hypocrisy or at least dereliction of duty.

Rather than the people who made the need for such scrutiny necessary, the Wilfs themselves. The bottom line is the NFL told the State that they had one choice, take the Wilfs and the Vikings or lose the Vikings.

Bet Danny hammered both those points home didn't he? :banghead:

If that tweet the U put out is bashing the Vikings, I shudder to think what anything more strongly worded would be called. Honestly, the UMN tweet didn't call out the Vikings, its fans, their play, or anything else. They were referring to the success of their own team by highlighting the fact that MSP actually has a football team that plays on a national/major level that's winning right now.

For all the Vikings apologists who come here and whine that certain Gophers fans get too worked up with the Vikings and how they've negatively affected the U's ability to succeed by saying that people can be fans of both the Vikings and Gophers, spend money/time on each, etc and that everything can co-exist... That's great until you remember that the media in this town has downplayed Gopher successes, ridiculed the team/AD/fans (making them the socially-accepted joke of the town despite middle-of-the-pack play over the last 14 years, minus 2 Brew years), and flat out given little to no coverage when not doing the previous 2. This is just another example of their overreaction and negative coverage of a completely innocuous tweet.
