KFAN Knuckleheads a little sensitive today regarding...

Can we just take a step back and not get mired in the aftermath and admit that the Gopher tweet wasn't even really taking a shot at the Vikings? It was a passive acknowledgment that the Gophers are the football team in the greater metro area that plays on a national level that's having some success. They're playing another big game at home at 7-2, playing to become 8-2 and likely ranked against a helmet school on national television. It would be great for football fans to come catch the game in person and see some exciting play with something on the line (that isn't "pray they lose to go 1-15 to draft a QB that MAY pan out in the pros). They weren't outwardly ragging on the Vikings cord, just having some fun that they are a team people can get behind right now, they're a great story.

Making a big deal out of this by the media wasn't necessary. They already have the power of the NFL marketing machine to draw in watchers and even fans to the Vikings. Let the Gophers enjoy a solid season.

i saw a nice tweet that a few gopher players retweeted relevant to this subject

"If you still support the Vikings i feel bad for you son! i got 99 problems but the #Gophers ain't one!"

PA has always been a big cry baby. If it was the other way around, neither one of these dooshes would have cared. And remember, these guys work at a station that is the flagship of the Gophers as well. Criticism is one thing, acting like I did when I was 12 is another. By the way, this is not even close to the first time the Gophers have been more successful than the Vikings in 51 years so, besides being childish, his comment makes no sense. And this is coming from someone who has been a big Vikings fan for longer than the Gophers.

This. I agree with all of this.

BTW PA when have the Vikings won any championships in the last 51 years?

I tweeted at PA pretty much this statement. And, I love the Vikes. Just a bigger gophers fan than Vikes, being an alum and all.

I am so out of the loop that I had no idea that Twitter was around 51 years ago.

Bwahaha!!! Great comment. Makes PA look like an even bigger d-bag. I always think of PA as the wanna-be Kevin Harlan who will never make it out of his little schtick on KFAN.

Great that such an innocent tweet exposed PA. He reacted like he's the VP of ticket sales.

If the roles were reversed in this, the board would be irate. This is just another questionable decision by the U in a long line if head scratchers. It's obvious there is not one group that oversees all of the marketing and PR that is released. I've got to think anyone with a bit of common sense would veto a tweet like that.

Light hearted, sure. But you're going to piss off way more people than you will entertain.

I think that claim is ludicrous. I'll be the first one to call Gopher fans sensitive, but if the Vikings were 7-2 and the Gophers were 1-7 there isn't a single soul that would be butt hurt about the Vikings tweeting about seeing the best team in town.

PA has put ALL of his eggs in one basket - the Viking basket. It's the only team in town that he cares about or follows or can talk about semi-intelligently. When the Vikings suck, there goes his schtick because nobody cares about them right now.

If he actually followed the other teams and could speak about them intelligently it would be a different story.

Repeat this often!

Tyrone Carter had something to say about this

"Bomb @DanBarreiroKFAN another score keep talking bad about us we taking our respect n showing it with our play in back n I got their Back!"

I guarantee they would if it was put in the context immediately following a Gopher loss in an attempt to steal fan attention or gloat.

I feel like a pro team taking a shot at a college team is more of a low blow than the other way around though. The Vikings are the more popular football team as well just being the most popular sports team in the state and the Gophers probably live in the Vikings' shadow for a lot of sports fans. If both teams were having equal success, the Vikings would probably be receiving more buzz than the Gophers. They wouldn't need to use the Gophers' failure to prop themselves up and get more attention because they get more attention regardless. This is the Gophers, the little brother/second fiddle to the Vikings in the eyes of many, trying to get their name out there while they're doing better than the Vikings, the main attraction so to speak.

So I may be biased as a Gopher fan who is almost entirely indifferent to the Vikings, but I think the Vikings, the most popular sports team in the state, taking a shot at a team of amateur athletes who routinely draws a smaller crowd than they do would be objectively a crappier thing to do than what the Gophers did.

Some Vikings fan is going at it with Ryan James, and a North Dakota State fan is trashing the Gophers (seriously what is with their obsession with us?).

Yeah , I don't disagree with anything you said. I just think it's a stupid thing to say and it would not have been received well the other way.

Barreiro spent some time this mourning talking up the Gophers and stating that the Vikings have become irrelevant.
I don't get the complete turnaround in his tweet?? Which one is an act, the Show or the Tweet?

Maybe just a case of "nobody can trash my Vikings but me."

Why would PA & Barreiro get worked up over that? Seems like a innocent mistake, mountain out of molehill.

It's surprising and petty that PA or Danny B would even have to comment on it. Making a mountain out of a molehill.

On the otherside, Gophers PR could do a little better job of acting like we've been here before, which we haven't really of course.

It's ALL an act for guys like Barreiro and Reusse. Their shows are for entertainment only, not analysis.

Saying we are the best team in town as a way to get fans excited and hopefully sell out the stadium, is so ridiculously innocuous compared to pointing out 50 years of losing. Get over yourself PA. You suck. The Vikings suck. continental diamond sucks. And Canterbury sucks.

Boy P.A makes me angry. I am constantly on the road for work and listen to sports talk all day. P.A. is constantly taking shots at the Gophers any chance he gets. Also he is constantly disrespectful to current and former gopher players. I can think of three instances; he had Quincy Lewis on asked him what it was like to play for Monson. Then implied that Quincy had to sit out the tournament game because he was a cheater. Quincy handled it with class because that is what Quincy is, I would have walked out of the damn studio. I emailed Captin Doosh and told him how disrespectful he was to a gopher great who currently works for the school and choose to live here because he loves it here. His response "sorry not enough hours of the day." Stop playing video games for 10 hours a day and do a freaking wikipedia search. 2nd time with Kevin Lynch same thing asking him what it was like to play for Monson.(What almost 10 years) Also asked him how exciting the Big Ten Tournament was. Just does not show any respect. Third time was when I had it. Kim Roystons dad use to call in all the time(don't know if he still does great guy on the radio even thought so when Royston was at Becky) they were doing a season preview and Royston's dad was giving a preview of how he thought the season would play out. After the interview was over and he was all nice to Mr. Royston he asks Justin Gaard how bad is really going to be because we know that isn't the truth. The fact of the matter is PA isn't a Vikings fan he gets paid to be a "fan", when he gets his next job in the next town by the next team he will do the same same thing and become their biggest backer. The guy is a money hungry ahole who acts like he is 20 when he is in his late 40's. I have a few friends who work at KFAN (not going to get to personal) and they aren't the biggest fans. I've met the man in a social setting through them and my dislike for his on air personality was confirmed.

I met PA one time at a bar/restaurant. Biggest ego of anyone I have met. I find him difficult to listens to. I don't think he listens to anyone, he has an agenda.

Yes we have. It just hasn't happened recently.

The local sports talk radio shtick is getting very old. Most of it is just lazy talking heads that get a kick out of spinning a few stats into a negative discussion in order to try and get a some sarcastic laughs.

When is the last time any of them have actually done a little research on a player or topic about the Gophers?

They would rather run something like "metrodome memories" that only feature the worst collapse or defeats. Wow, amazing creativity and intellect in that work.

No wonder so many fans have such a defeatist attitude when all they hear from the sports media is just sorrow, ridicule and sarcasm. People make fun of Sid, but his homer attitude helped foster a more positive atmosphere and we actually learned more about the teams.

He needs some talking points and he is desperate for material that is all.

Dumb tweet by Gopher sports that accomplishes nothing, but seeming petty. This board would have exploded if the Vikings official twitter tweeted out something similar on the day of a Gopher conference loss. I think the vast majority of football fans have both a favorite college team and a favorite pro team, and a ton of people root for both the Vikings and the Gophers. It was equally petty of PA to get involved, but at least his Twitter represents him and not a broad group of people like Gopher Sports. Once the initial tweet went out, whoever sent it out had to expect some blow back. I would think after all the years of losing, we could focus on the potential (and it is still just that) of a winning conference season as opposed to needing to take shots at others failures.

The people posting that the tweet was dumb for reasons of aggravating the Vikings or their fan base are overreacting as badly as that clown PA did. I had to go back and re-read that post to make sure I hadn't missed something. The tweet encourages people to support the "best football team in town." This feels like standard boilerplate in self-conducted advertising, nothing more.

It's the general problem with Talk Radio formats. There's so much time, and so little to talk about. To keep away from outright boredom, they make it ridiculous.

http://www.vikings.com/fans/promotions/und-promo-notes.html

Not to be a thread jacker, but after hearing the promo linked above, I don't blame Gopher athletics. I first heard a commercial on KFAN during the Vikings game featuring Parise of the Wild promoting this. Why is there no scholarship to the University of Minnesota? It's not like they will be using TCF Bank stadium soon...

Talk about marketing blunders. Screw the Vikings and KFAN. This is coming from a Vikings fan.

I used to be disappointed that my small town didn't get the Minneapolis sports radio channels, but I don't care anymore. These guys are vampires who suck the fun out of every Minnesota sports fan.
