Here are some quotes, not verbatim, from the post-game presser.

Jerry Kill:
•The most important thing is, the bottom line is, we won the game. We found a way to do it. Our defense continues to play outstanding football.
•Playing with two young safeties, they really grew up.
•Our punter played well. Peter Mortell made them drive the field.
•Offensively it was a struggle. We did what we had to do. I’m responsible; I’m the head coach. I don’t know if I have the answers yet, until I watch film.
•We didn’t handle it well up front. It starts there.
•We’re 2-1. Could be a hell of a lot worse.
•How to fix the offense: That’s a good question. I haven’t watched the film. Just have to keep plugging away. Not running the ball well. That’s where it starts. To sum it up, I’m not doing a very good job coaching. We have to coach better and play better and not make excuses.
•“Physically, I thought we got it handed to us.”
•“Don’t have the magical answer right now, but I better get it. Or I don’t deserve to be here.”
•“I’m not going to make any comments on the quarterbacks. Not to be disrespectful.”
•On the offensive line: Did I think we’d be better at this point…Sure, no doubt.
•I don’t think effort is the issue. We just have to get better on one side of the ball.

Alex Keith:
•We’re happy we won. Didn’t play as well as we wanted to, but we got the W and that’s all that matters.
•We were confidence on 100 out there. We were flying around making plays.
•We forced a lot of bad throws. We were getting a lot of pressure on the QB.
•I just had one of the best games I’ve had. Hopefully my game keeps going up from here.
•We grind out each game even if the offense is stalling; we’re still going to be clicking on every level.

KJ Maye:
•The frustration came from not executing well. Have to iron out the mistakes in practice.
•Today, we saw many looks that we didn’t see in practice, so we had to adjust some.
•Mitch has been staying positive. Everyone knows everyone feeds off of him. We’ve been doing fine on offense, just have to get into a rhythm.
•They put in a lot of different things. They messed with the QBs head a little bit.
•“I was coughing up blood but didn’t have any pain. I wasn’t going to let that keep me out of the game.”

Antonio Johnson:
•We feel great. We set a goal earlier in the week to get a shutout and we did that. There aren’t many shutouts in college football.
•We struggled a little bit, but at the end of the day we come here to win. And we won.
•I like playing defense on this team, cuz I like hitting people.

Maye mentioned offensive adjustments....when exactly did those take place? Maybe he missed a lot of the offensive plays while apparently coughing up blood for the second straight week so he just assumed they were making adjustments.

Not surprised that Kill went with the "I'm to blame" in the post game presser. That is his go to when the offense puts up a stinker in an effort to not publicly blame the players or offensive coaches.

I don't like how he mentioned the run game... What do you expect from running straight up the middle 35 times? Seriously.

Our media do we not have anyone who knows football. Where the hell are the jet sweeps I mean over the last how many years that is the one play they actually can execute. Ask the question media. Where are the screens.

Here is Kill's response after being asked if he understood why people might have booed during the game.

“Again, we won the game. There’s a lot of people in the country that like to be 2-1. They were probably booing at me. Last time they booed at somebody they fired him, so maybe I need to get fired tomorrow. I don’t know. We don’t have an AD so I can’t get fired tomorrow but, they’re probably booing me. They probably deserve to boo me. I probably deserve to be fired today. …I’ll get 105 emails when I walk out of here that I should be fired.”

What a horse**** response from Kill. He knows damn well they weren't booing him they were booing the entire offense for not being able to move the ball and score on one of the worst teams in the FBS. He gets really thin skinned about stuff like this and his stock line is to go to the "my fault, I should probably be fired" crap.

He also loves to go to the "this ain't the NFL, we can't trade for a player" line which is also crap because unlike the NFL the coaches are directly responsible for the players on the roster. If they can't find the players they need to execute their schemes then that falls on them and they need to either adjust their schemes to fit the players they can recruit/develop or in most places the head coach would change the coordinator. However with Kill that won't happen.

He knows full well that he doesn't deserve to get fired but we are hitting the point where Limegrover probably does deserve to be, many places already would have pulled the trigger....I don't believe Kill every will so that puts everyone in a tough spot if things continue the way they have through 3 games this year.

Serious question: what would you have Kill say? You want him to throw Leidner under the bus? The patched -together OL?

We know Kill has tremendous loyalty to his staff. Do you want him to publicly criticize Limegrover at a presser?

Post game press conferences just aren't going to be the venue for full disclosure, candor and confession but I suspect that is what you want.

Great notes, Travis. We were wondering how Kill would react to this ugly win. I read your notes aloud to my tailgating group, very insightful.

He could have left out the firing part. I mean saying something like....

"Oh, I need to do a better job of coaching and getting these guys prepared. We won, but we still have a long ways to go. I take full responsibilities, and after reviewing the game film, we will try to correct our issues. We had a great crowd, and we let them down with how we played on Offense, but it's all on me."

Instead he said.... "so what? We won. Shut up! Without me, the gophers would be 0-3! All that matters is we won. Quit complaining! If you guys keep complaining, then maybe I should be fired and then you'll be back to your normal sucky football team!"

Well, not verbatim, but that's essentially what he said.

Can they stop coaching like a MAC team?

can someone mention to them that they are Big Ten coaches now and if they cant handle the heat ...time to move on

Illinois without a head coach handle the same team 52-3

period end of story

Fix the problem its your job!

if it new players hold a tryout

pull scholarships

Yes i am ticked off

I paid a premium seat license and this is what we get?

I thought he essentially said that based on the OP:

But again, he could have left out the fire me, fire me, we won, fire me part.

So he invalidated the emphasized comments and you focus on that other quote instead. Seems odd but clearly YMMV. Guess we'll agree to disagree then.

As someone else mentioned I don't want the whole "I should be fired" speech because it is a total cop-out. But be honest something to the effect of:

Glad we got the win. Defense played outstanding and Mortell did a fantastic job pinning Kent State back in their own end. Clearly we need to play better on the offensive side of the ball, that starts with me and extends down through all the coaches and players over there. We are going to continue to evaluate personnel and work our butts off to get it figured out because we feel like we have the ability to be a BIG Ten champion caliber team but we are going to need all three phases playing at a high level to get where we want to be.

this response would have been a fair thing for him to say
loyalty to a fault will get him coaching in the MAC again soon

I guess I think those sentiments are expressed by what he said as reported here:

I want him to throw the play calling and coaches responsible under the bus. Where the blame belongs.

I think you have a loooooong wait coming.

But I'm curious -- you obviously assume that it's the plan and not the execution. Isn't it really a combination?

well.....I guess if I had a choice I would rather win ugly than lose brilliantly......

This......plus it's apparent Kill was as PO'd as many of us fans.

I am impressed with and grateful for what Kill has done for the Gophers. But anyone with common sense would agree that Kill has lost his composure and is showing some chinks in his character. He's being hypocritical in how he expects his players to behave like men while he acts like a child. These moments provide valuable insights into the whole Jerry Kill, beyond the man who most of us have come to know and highly respect. You rarely see a great head coach speak or think this way. This side of his personality of course leaks into everything he does in life: no different than any other human. It affects how he coaches and the decisions he makes with personnel and how he regards certain players. We all have tendencies. Coach Kill has shown me a side of himself that I believes detracts from all his great qualities and gives me insight as to why our offense has not grown much the last 3 years. I for one think Kill deserves 10 full seasons. I don't think we can find a better staff. But I would counsel Kill to get some advice from other leaders on how he might tweak, refine and enhance his personality/character and decision making. It's never too late to grow as a person.

I don't think I would be very eloquent that soon after a horse crap game either.

I don't think I would be very eloquent that soon after a horse crap game either.

Not eloquent. Just act like the leader and father-like figure your players need. Just say " I love our team I love our players they are great kids and we're working our butts off to improve. Next question." Keep saying the same thing. He owes nobody any explanation. This is between the coaches and players.

its the plan and the execution but the coaches are responsible for the execution. that is where many apologist are not seeing clearly at the whole picture

yes most see the players not doing what it takes to run the offense that is called. So go to the position coaches and chew the coaches out to get the players to play better

as an OC/play caller it is your job to run the plays your team can perform. if Matt is telling his team and the whole fan base that running the same up the gut play for 2 yards is the best we can do with the personnel we have then it is a shame on the coaches for recruiting them and a failure as a coach to coach them up better than they are showing.

As fans we want to see wins and the system running on all cylinders. right now we got some pistons broken and our engine is clunking. the oil the coaches are saying at press conference is old and is doing the engine more damage.
its time to change the plugs and throw some more gas in. I just hope the block can stand all the heat before it cracks. we all know the engine is pretty much shot if we crack the block

Yes, I would rather have a coach who gives us 6 scoops of hyperbole and cliches instead of guy who cares, who wears his heart on his sleeves and who won't accept mediocrity and will literally work from his hospital bed to keep his commitments to this team, school and fan base.

I am fine that Kill was upset about this loss, I am glad he didn't throw players or coaches under the bus...and frankly, if I worked 100 hours per week, traveled all over the state and country on behalf of this team, school and fan base and the bastards booed me during a winning game...I would probably told you all to go fck yourself in my press conference too.

His job is to graduate players, run a clean program and win games...and on Saturday, he accomplished all three. Those of you that can't get your head around that fact, feel free to send him an email asking him to resign so he can respond directly to you.

Our media do we not have anyone who knows football. Where the hell are the jet sweeps I mean over the last how many years that is the one play they actually can execute. Ask the question media. Where are the screens.

Jet sweeps tend not to work well on teams that rush upfield hard off the ends- as KSU was doing yesterday with their OLBs and weak side DEs. My issue is when teams crash off the edge with a hard upfield outside initial rush is why are we not taking advantage of this and running Power off Tackle instead of continuously running between the guards?
