Jeff Jones, former top recruit, leaving Gophers football

Yep. Same goes for hoops during the Tubby era and getting guys like Royce White. Not to be pessimistic but thats a big reason why we got Seth and Dredrick too. Big time programs can afford to pass on those types of talents, we can't.
I mean do Seth and snelson have academic issues or off field problems we're not aware of? If not we shouldn't be including them in this context.

Pretty sure it is tough to graduate a semester early like Seth Green if you are an academic risk. Have no idea about Snelson's academics.

Seth certainly doesn't have issues. Snelson was rumored to have some issues when he transferred to Flanagan. I was more referring more to a lot of top programs giving up on them after once pursuing them and being more high risk on the field then off. I'll admit it is a bit different situation for those two than with guys like Jeff, Royce etc.

If he can't succeed here with the emphasis on academics, monitoring, and support available, I wonder if he'll get the help he needs at the JC. You really have to try not to make it with how involved this staff is in trying to keep track. Plus, with his high profile and status coming in, it would seem near impossible for him to be under the radar.

No secret why. It's because we get the high-risk ones.

Helmet schools can afford to pass on those.

The highly-touted recruits are considered highly-touted because they have offers from helmet schools.

I don't think guys like Sam Maresh or Rashede Hageman were considered high risk guys.

Not surprising. Golden Gopher football in a nutshell.

Is this strange timing? Finals are going on right now. Did JJ already know the goose was cooked?

Get in the classroom and work hard.

Best of luck and truly hope to see you back in Gold and Maroon soon.

Can't miss what you never had. Brooks, Smith, Femi-Cole. We're fine at RB.

I hate to do this, but can someone explain his eligibility? I thought it was confusing before. If I remember correct, his first year at the U counted but he could get it back if he met a certain % towards his degree? Since he's transferring due to academics, I'm assuming that year is out the window. He also played this season very sparingly, correct?

That would be 2 seasons gone. Can either of those count as RS years? Maybe medical RS this year? If not, does he transfer to CC with only 2 years remaining? If he only has 2 years remaining, he needs to RS this year to have 1 year of eligibility remaining after getting his degree, right?

The Gophs will be fine without him...no biggie as far as I'm concerned. I'm glad he came, but I was skeptical. I hope that Jeff is able to find success on and off the field.

I believe Iowa Western is where we just got the lineman Jackson from.

I don't know the answers to these questions. However, while he's transferring for academic reasons, we haven't heard that he flunked out, failed, classes, etc. We know he struggled, but for all we know he's still be on pace to get his degree. If not, maybe he could make up some credits over the summer.

I wasn't sure if that % requirement was a 4 year degree or if it also applied to a 2 year degree. I'm sure others on here know this stuff. Something else I didn't consider. I believe the announcement mentioned that this was only this semester I he had difficulty. If that is true, perhaps if he did well enough last year, enough of his courses would transfer and he would be able to complete his degree this coming year?

His eligiblity is like a rubik's cube

Please don't do that. Gopher Warrior might reappear. Better to stay confused.

There are two parts to the term "student-athlete". The student part isn't negotiable... Unless you play in the SEC of course. Lol

Well, this sucks but somewhat explains the mysterious goings-ons the last several months. The explanations Kill and others gave seemed like hogwash after all the praise heaped on him last spring. he was practicing yet not playing, questionable injuries etc. We will never know the particulars of why but obviously the pressures of big-time athletics and academics came to a head.

Assuming his credit hours from last year are usable towards a degree and transfer to Iowa Western CC (no guarantee if less than C) it's conceivable he could only spend one year there and transfer back. I would guess it will take longer than two or three semesters to get the necessary 64(?) credits to graduate. The odds of that happening are probably not great, for reasons already mentioned. A history of borderline academics, lack of focus at the U where he had all the resources and tutors working for and with him, and he'll still need to split time with football at Iowa Western.

In the end, this unfortunately seems like a talented but focus-less young man that may let his big opportunity slip away if he doesn't readjust his approach towards school. Hopefully getting away from home and away from possibly distracting influences will help. Then again, maybe he doesn't have the desire to be great.

Maddening. He has/had all kinds of talent. Really, really hope he gets things squared away and we see him in the backfield in a year or two.

wow-- I have to say I find it really hard to feel sorry for someone that has every resource available to them to succeed (free tuition and tutors) that most kids do not have yet they can't make it work. He had people watching his back, helping him navigate the system and making sure he would go to class. I have a tough time thinking going to a CC will help his study habits.

Judge Smails: Well, the world needs ditch diggers, too

There were reports throughout the season, including from Coaches T.C. and Kill, that Jones was dealing with migraines on an almost regular basis. That could certainly be a solid reason for falling behind academically. Particularly for a single semester.

That said it's a free, anonymous internet board. People speculating like d-bags is to be expected.

I don't recall frequent reports of migraine. I remember a report of concussion and a lower limb issue and perhaps one report of migraine. Regardless, if he is a chronic migraine sufferer or post-concussive it would seem unlikely and perhaps punitive to enroll him in dafuq, Iowa, away from the top experts at the university that would be best qualified help him find the triggers and find proper treatments.

On Kfan they were saying that Jeff needs to complete his 2yr degree at JC and then he can transfer back. It is the same school that has become a pipeline of JC players for the U.

Per Joe C:

http://www.startribune.com/jeff-jones-former-top-recruit-leaving-gophers-football/362682041/

Jeff Jones, the Gophers’ most highly touted recruit of the past decade, is transferring to Iowa Western Community College after falling behind academically this semester, coach Tracy Claeys told the Star Tribune on Wednesday.

“He and I talked, and I think it’s a good decision,” Claeys said.

Claeys said Jones is working through the paperwork of the transfer but plans to enroll at the junior college in January. Jones will be able to go through spring practice with the Reivers and play next fall.

Once he earns his two-year degree, he’ll be eligible to transfer back to a Division-I school.

“He’s a great kid — a great kid,” Claeys said. “He’s more than welcome to come back. He just had a tough semester academically, and it really wasn’t until this semester.”

With Smith and Brooke being So. next year probably not that big of deal.
